    So basically the director's cut is to THX 1138 what the special editions are to Star Wars. Like, George could at least let the original versions of his films be readily available if he's gonna do stuff like this

      @@buzzcrushtrendkill Very true... I was quite excited when I popped in my Blu-Ray to finally experience this film for the first time and the CGI crap stuck out like a sore thumb... taking me out of the experience almost completely. The sound mixing was also quite bizarre - those cars crashing into things were way too loud in comparison to the rest of the sound mix. The director's cut is certainly a downgrade besides the fresh film scan and that mind lock sequence.

    • @buzzcrushtrendkill
      @buzzcrushtrendkill Год назад +9

      @@AntoniTolwinski Agree. The fresh film scan does look great. That is a definite improvement. But it was especially the car scenes that really took me out of the moment. The extended scene of the car moving around traffic has the physics of a small remote controlled car. Just laughable.

    The changes in the directors cut that were most jarring were when more vertical levels are added. For me it changes a horizontal, claustrophobic underground world to a multi-level mall parking lot from the 1970's.

The colour grading looks much better, the holograms are a bit out of place but i do think i prefer them, and the sense of being watched during the sex scene is much stronger. At the same time. The directors cut really does sell the idea that they are living in an underground city in a post nuclear apocalypse scenario. The original cut of the film feels like theyre just in a dystopian factory city for capitalistic greed. The harsh reality is that the underground city is their safe haven, and the rules that exist down there are to ensure the overall survival of the human species for the greater good.
    Order through chaos and denial of the human condition. The directors cut ending with the change from the original to the hue of the sun feels like there is damage to the ozone layer.
    The fact that theyre yelling at him that he cannot survive out there, yet he gets to the top in the original and a fucking bird ruins the shot and makes you think he has a chance. They remove the bird, and while it may not tell you that it is absolutely a desolate wasteland up there, it removes the sense of hope that Noah on the ark felt when he encountered a bird after a month afloat following the deluge. I wish there was a climactic realization like at the end of the planet of the apes, but the ambiguity also piques the interest.

      @PlumarySingenz 7 месяцев назад +6

      Lucas mentioned that he noticed the bird in the shot but kept it because he liked the added ambiguity it added. The film is partially a metaphor for life in the early 60s and 70s according to George. The people telling him that he can't survive isn't supposed to be taken at face value, it's supposed to represent "the system" telling people lies or half-truths in order to keep their people docile and obedient.
      The protagonists will to search for freedom, despite what everyone around him tells him, and despite the consequences he will get for his pursuit, is supposed to show the will of individual persevering no matter how much others want to tie it down.

    It's the same problem as Attack of the Clones. Each scene with an overreliance on CGI looks more and more like a video game as the years roll by, because they just stick out from the reality around them.
    Imagine if Spielberg decided to go back in and add more and more of the shark back into to Jaws.

Though I thought that THX’s fight scene with the shell dweller was better left unchanged. I naturally agree that even with Lucas’ best intentions, original pre-CGI impacts can be much more appreciated by my generation.

    Honestly just like the Star Wars special editions I don’t think any of the changes are inherently awful. In fact a lot of them are fantastic on paper and Lucas has every right to make them. However just like with Star Wars the execution varies. With THX there is less changes but honestly the quality of the changes is less positive than the ones made to Star Wars and a big factor of that is the obviousness of the CGI. I guarantee that if the THX-1138 and Star Wars special editions were updated now, with modern visual effects techniques, with more time to work on the changes, and overseen by Lucas these changes would be more acceptable to fans and possibly more preferable to the originals. It’s just that the CGI sticks out to much.

However the CGI could be implemented better as their are certain scenes like the android factory, the car chase, and the monkey's where it feels like it wasn't blended as well as it could have. The extended city shots and the extra crowds of people are amazing though and really add to the claustrophobic and dystopian future aspect.

    Ahh George Lucas. Can't keep his mitts off a masterpiece. Hopefully when he goes to the size XL big producers chair in the sky, someone will find the Technicolor Techniscope print of THX 1138 he has squirreled away in his sock drawer (and the pristine IB Technicolor print of the original 1977 Star Wars). Would Leonardo go back 30 years later and redux Mona Lisa's smile? Does an old man have the right to be a revisionist of a young mans dream?
    THX has only been released in lower-end DVD quality; seeing an original Techniscope HD print of THX 1138 would be worth a special release. But alas we have to "Despecialize" and edit up our own from the unaltered parts of the Directors cut and the rest from available DVD/Laser Disk versions to see something matching the original in its low budget, but high quality Techniscope form.
    Can't find a single change in the "Directors Cut" that improved the story telling from the 1970 original (and the few scenes I would have fiddled with that suffered due to budget/time limitations during shooting remain in place - what they are I'm not telling!) At least he didn't muck with Walter Murch's soundscape, which is 50% of the genius of the film.
    Sorry you only got a $750K budget the first time around George, and WB were dicks to you and Francis, but you delivered to them a young mans masterpiece of cinema - on a shoestring, as your first movie, and at only 26. We'd just like to be able to buy/see that original masterpiece (Techniscope via Technicolor IB, on film, in a theater - like in 1970 - not like what you perceive the world wants as a kind of creepy 61 year old revisionist who can't leave what's already (his own) genius alone.).

    Like Lucas's improvements to the original Star Wars, this was beyond silly. The updated scenes completely clash with the rest of the movie, look ridiculous (particularly the video-game car chase scene additions) and completely undercut the vibe he was originally going for. The underground society is drab, run down, claustrophobic and prison-like for most of the movie. The shiny high-tech spacious-feeling CGI scenes Lucas added jarringly take the viewer completely out of that world.

THX 1138 has long been one of my favorite films of all time, and i don't care what any of the "get off my lawn I NEVER WANT THINGS TO CHANGE" crowd thinks - lucas ONLY improved the movie with the director's cut. the new scenes and additions are all tasteful and perfectly fit the mood and aesthetic of the original. they expand things that weren't clear or were clearly intended in the original in ways that make sense. the director's cut is the best version of this film. deal with it. or, you know, just complain on the internet cause you like complaining on the internet. d-:

      your 'comment' may very well be the most pro-jibberish, terminally adolescent comment ever made; at least elaborate so ppl have SOME idea wtf you're popping off about.
      lucas "THX-1138" isn't even political in any conventional sense; it's a rumination on the {possibly) logical end result of late stage capitalism & the (apparently) never ending search by the white male psyche to bring 'order' to the universe. in fact, there is NO definitive proof anywhere in the narrative that this dystopian construct is the result of any "post nuclear apocalypse" but was actually a conscious decision to control ALL aspects of a social construct: births, deaths, consumerism, population control, the elimination of the distractions of the 'natural' world, education, social order etc. it almost suggests a "4th reich" if you will.
      i recently watched the "director's cut" with family members who had never even heard of it (i've raved about it to my eldest for years) & was QUITE startled by all the added material; the "buck rogers" opening remains quite baffling to me. what is also quite baffling to me is that this is obviously the most mature, thought provoking & sophisticated of anything lucas has made (at least in the speculative fiction genre), that instead of producing anything else (in this genre) that lives up to it's promise, he keeps tinkering around with it. after this gem would come the ad infinitum, ad nauseam juvenilia of "star wars". how these young men got THESE actors & THIS location access on his FIRST feature length flick is really quite astounding but it's clear that intellectually he shot his wad here & then seems to have slipped into a kind of artistic coma. i enjoy some of the ancillary narratives like "the mandalorian" for what they are but they are hardly thought provoking; they are visual sugar highs supporting narrative adolescent fluff (lucas himself doesn't even write or direct much if any of these projects). it's baffling & sad really.
