Chasing lands is a mistake- One shot and fouling changes the dimension. Getting within 20-30 thou is fine. Those guns are never sensitive enough, nor are the distances long enough to matter. I appreciate your enthusiasm! Excellent video! Thanks
Years ago I purchased a Harrington Richardson single shot in .357 Max, I’ve taken many deer with it. The longest shot was at around 125yrds. Great hunting round, I shoot 158 grain hollow points.
I am in the same boat. My most popular video ever was a casting and powdercoating video, and it got removed. That seems to be their favorite target right now. It's just a matter of time before they get to the rest of our reloading videos. Pretty sad. So much great info, that take a huge amount of time, effort and money, are getting deleted.
If you go through www.hausofarms.com the pricing is pretty reasonable. Barrels typically running around $280, very versatile! I own both the Encore and the Contender G2.
Just to add to the mix, there is a cartridge in between the 357 Magnum and Maximum :- 360 Dan Wesson. Brass length is c. 1.41” & is reputed to be less fussy than the Max as far as reloading goes. Brass is available from Starline.
357 maximum from a carbine is awesome. I have a H&R Handi Rifle that I rechambered. I use a LBT 180 grain bullet with lil gun powder. I have never tried AA1680 but I hear that is the top dog powder for this round in a carbine.
Good idea, I rechambered an Italian Rolling Block for 357 Max. It's pretty heavy because it has an octagon barrel. What I wanted to do was load the max with black powder just for fun. Have shot some factory ammo and the bullet gets to the 100 yard line mighty quick. Might try some 777 in the Rolling Block with some powder coated SWC bullets. It's too bad that no factory made a carbine for it early in its life. I suppose I could get a custom tc Contender carbine barrel. Thanks for your comment. 357 Max is a fine round.
Mr. 45LC: I've looked up stats on the 357 max, its an impressive cartridge. A while ago I talked to you about buying a 475 Linebaugh. I saw Magnum Research is going to start making a 500 Linebaugh. I went to order one and in the used section at the store was a hardly used 500 smith. I got a great deal on it so that's what I got instead. Bought 1 box of factory ammo, wow its pricy. I'm heading to the basement to work up rounds to test tomorrow. It is extremely accurate. It kicks a little bit but I'm very satisfied with it. Thank you for your advice before. You are a valuable recourse to younger enthusiasts such as myself.
Both my brother and my uncle had 14" TC Contenders back when this round was introduced. They would plink with the .38 specials and hunt with the Maximums. I'm petty sure revolvers were made by S & W. I was told they suffered from bad throat erosion and cutting of the top strap at the cylinder gap caused by the super hot gasses. Thats why they were discontinued. I really think that a modern lever action rifle, like the Marlin 94 in .357, would handle the pressure of the Maximum. I just don't feel like taking a chance and trying it!!
I have a 357 Maximum in a Thomson Contender, 14 inch barrel. I have had great luck with the 35 rem 200gn Hornady bullet, with 14.1 gn of 4227. I shoot 1 inch grouping at 100 yards. The brass is expensive and hard to find. Great video.
I have a 357 Max barrel on a T/C Contender and it is a wrist kicker. I only have 20 pieces of brass though purchased about 1980. Thanks for the Starline tip.
As usual, awsome video Steve!!. Never mind Y.T. playing as pseudo-Holy Inquisition with their Medieval-ish removal of great guns & reloading videos, since now we can enjoy those thru The Reloaders Network, thanks to the hard work of Loads of Bacon, ThorsAxe, yourself and several others who created/joined that source of ballistic info. Thank you kindly for your dedicated work and selflessness that benefit us shooters all around the Globe!; Best regards, and God Bless!!🙏
Sounds like a great item. I will have to check out Bulberry to see what they have for old model Contenders. Then again, i just might buy an Encore, since they are so versatile. Finances are better, but i'm still trying to get some things squared away. When the weather improves, maybe i can go out to the club and burn some powder. Great video as always, Steve. Keep fighting the good fight
I have an Encore like that in 45-70. I also have a Ruger No3 that i had re-barrelled into .357 Max. My .357 Max started life with cast bullets and had only ever been cleaned with Ed's Red. I put 50 x 158gn jacketed bullets @ 2100fps through it over the weekend and had no copper fouling whatsoever ( i used a copper solvent to check) which surprised me. Ed does say that Ed's Red will condition the bore to prevent fouling. Maybe he's right. The .357 Max is fast becoming a favourite cartridge.
Michael Streeter - As is mine to me...I've already done some testing with the 180 gr Hot Cores and impressive with smiles..!! That Bullberry barrel is a sweetie. Have a great day, FC Steve
I regret not buying a used Encore just like yours, the barrel was a 25-06, also had a 12g rifled barrel for an additional cost, but I bought a Reminder 700 lefty instead. I have been kicking my self ever since.
back in the early 90s i used the 357 max in tc contender in silhouette competition i was using 200gr cast gas check that was made for 35 rem cartridge loaded to around 1400 fps
My Remington brass has wild variation in rim thickness. With only 0.006" max headspace recommended and 0.005" variation in brass setting headspace is leaves much to be desired. My Starline brass is much more consistent.
I never heard of the .357 Maximum round, and you answered all my questions. Thank you. Gevalia is good coffee, French press. Delish. Now we're even. Buwahahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha 😆😂😂😁😂😆 haha 😂🤣
A Henry Single Shot in 357 Magnum would be a perfect candidate to get rechambered to 357 Maximum. Great for hunting and then you can have 357 Magnum and 38 Special for plinking.
I'm all for new loadings, cartridges and calibers when they accomplish something. That said.. Seem it would've been easier and cheaper, in the long run, to just go to .41mag or even .44 mag.. But, I am only a plinker :) Thanks Steve!
I have sourced Johnson Paste Wax. Maybe 200 cans, I thought they had discontinued a couple years ago but the store can get a couple hundred if anyone is interested.
Im not sure what the formula was, but have read somewhere with the 140 grain hornady leverolution bullet in 357 max, guys were getting above 2000 fps. Maybe 2400+ fps but am not sure. I will have to find the data again if I can. Reason I researched, was back when Indiana was allowing the wildcat 358 cal rifle calibers that met the specs to be legally considered pistol caliber rifles, many were getting custom rifles made to take advantage of how the rules read. One of those calibers was called the 358 Hoosier. I argued the point, why not just go with a 357 max and save some money. There were also some existing calibers, that if you trimmed the brass to the spec were also allowed, like the 35 rem. Oddly Indiana before was allowing centerfire rifles, were allowing these wildcats that were basically just as centerfire rifle as a 30-06 or similar, and calling them pistol calibers if they met the spec. When they opened up the rifle options to regular calibers, that pretty much fazed the wildcats out. Some of the wildcats were basically short magnums with a .358 bullet.
Ooo boy, .38 SC out of that .357 max chamber will have a lottttt of jump from case to lands! I'd be very surprised if accuracy did not suffer at all. 😮
Did Ruger ever make anything for 357 Maximum? It seems to be one of those cartridges always hovering on the brink of Oblivion, but like .327 Magnum it stays alive--as Ruger still makes revolvers for it.
If I get a .357 Magnum reamed to Maximum, could I expect all .358 rifle bullets to fit fine (aside from possibly .358 Win and .35 Whelen bullets possibly not going fast enough to expand properly; .35 Remington bullets might work fine)? If so, that would offer a lot of reloading options. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles with youtube, you put out high quality stuff!
Love your videos fortune cookie. Very informative. Have you tried 360 dan wesson? Alot of lever action will run with minor customization. 360 loads on same dies as 357 max
Jim Breedlove - The 360 DW would work in guns that would not accomodate the 357 Maximum. I haven't tried it and shortening my Maximum brass wouldn't make much sense. If Starline ever makes the brass again, I probably would get some of that though... Happy Thanksgiving to ya..!! Steve
You can always put your videos on TRN. You might not make any money, but it sounds like RUclips is taking your money away here and at least your content will be welcomed and appreciated at TRN.
My brother bought the reamer and did his Handy Rifle from 357 Mag to Max. In my opinion, velocity gain (if any) wasn't worth it and accuracy suffered drastically when he used 357 Mag. Speer and Lyman manuals have data. Good luck.
Your opening statement has no validity as I was there in 1975 and following. Remington Arms and RUGER developed the cartridge. Back dated documents suddenly appeared after the development of the cartridge. Information was leaked to Elgin in 1980- 1981 during development of cartridge. We developed a .223/ 357/in 1979. No manufacture of arms or ammunition ever produced the drawings that suddenly appeared after its release. However, I and several others in contact from 1975 and advanced much of the .357 loading for Handgun silhouette. At no time did Elgin any information about and extended .357. Appreciate your technical information about the loading of the .357 Maximum. I have watched other videos you have produced. The were very informative. The case head stamp is .357 REM Max nothing else official. Some boutique cases were made with another head stamp as anyone can do. The SAMMI cartridge is .357 Maximum.
Hey Steve, UT really sucks, but what can you do but upload to other sites like TRN and others. I was watching this video and was wondering when you were going to discuss bullet jump and then you did :-) Great idea, I don't have a single shot rifle but will remember your trick. Will look for the demo of that barrel.
I know this is old, but here goes. The 357 Max will give you another 150 yards further than the 44 mag, while retaining more than enough knockdown power. Really no comparison in handguns or rifles, 357 max outperforms 44 mag, hands down.
Michael Tab - Let's just say that 357 Maximum -- 24 grains of 1680 with that 180 gr Speer Hot Core is good for one hole 5 shot groups at 25 yards from rest at average MV (10 feet from muzzle) 1945 fps and average SD of 9. Should be easily accurate for game or silhouettes at over 100 yards. We can go to a max charge of 27 grains. These results are on a video that will soon post on Patreon on the testing. Best to ya, FC Steve
MrEricdgreat - It was only a matter of time as this has been happening to other shooting channels. And it is only going to get worse, Trouble is that instead of just going around and only freely deleting all the "objectionable" videos, they will start taking whole channels down. We are having a hard time figuring out exactly why a video is "bad". I've already taken down numerous videos, but if I review that one brand of primers is best - would that be objectionable? Have a great day, FC Steve
Steve, youtube is taking down all the videos that the taliban could use. taliban don't need FC perfect bullets. hehehehehe, hey what about the nra and the russians? thought the nra was on our side? keep doing what your doing, have fun.
naz dagg - The guess is that the NRA was working with the Russians to bring surplus Mosin Negant rifles and all the Russian ammo and primers back into importation. Plus, we'd be giving Russia first trade status so that Fords and Chevys would be built in the Ukraine for sale throughout Russia and Eastern Europe as well as shipped for sale in the US.
