    Sat down with the in-laws and introduced to them one of my favorite characters ....Frank Booth.... We watched the whole movie, At the end my father in law said "that was one of the most screwed up movies I've ever seen, but I liked it, and I don't know if I should" .

      I thought I was going to read “after the movie they turned to their kid and said ‘if this fella likes this movie what the hell are you doing with him??” at the end of your story.

    Since I saw it almost ten years ago, I've always thought of Blue Velvet as the Oedipal dream of a young man obsessed with rescuing his mother from the abuse of his father (the key quote - "I'm the Daddy, and you're the Mommy")and possibly the abuse of himself by his father (see the "Pretty! Pretty!" forced kissing scene, among other scenes). In the end, he overcomes trauma so that he can pursue a wonderful relationship with his super normal all American blonde girlfriend Sandy. Possibly. Maybe. The ending seemed really...pat and pretty for David Lynch.
    I can't find anyone else that shares this interpretation online, but I feel it fits.

      May we can say that even Frank fits in that freudian incestuous relationship.

    • @russy7679
      @russy7679 3 года назад

      If Lynch wants to give us happy ending, he really does and mean it. Just watch the ending of Fire Walk With Me and Inland Empire, very optimistic and different tone, albeit a very disturbing film. I think it's all about the emotion you felt throughout the film. Plot is just secondary.

      myself i was standing in line to see a nother flick back in 86 when i heard someone in line commenting, about how they had seen blue velvet and it was the most disgusting film they had ever seen. Well i realized that this person was another toungless, super egg head. that was all i needed , i got out of line and got in the line to buy tickets for blue velvet. When frank got it between the horns, i felt so liberated and free. That Jef Beaumont was a hell of a dude, and he did get the girl in the end and his father in law's best wishes. God i wish i was Jef beaumont, and he is in line for the hardware stoe.

    Your analysis is great! But honestly I’ve always seen this film as almost the opposite of what you say. I think Jeffrey thinks he’s found peace at the end but he’s really just killed a man who he judged to be evil when he could have left the apartment instead of going back into the closet. That closet is very indicative of Jeffrey’s character being seemingly nice but hiding a strange dark side that maybe not even he fully understands at the beginning, and does he ever really? Like we the audience only see snippets of the larger story, so does Jeffrey who appoints himself judge jury and executioner of Frank without really understanding him... Frank is a very sick character yes, but he has so many moments of humanity that shine through the madness that I feel sorry for him in a way... I think he was showing love in the only ways he ever knew, and he’s completely honest about who he is and how he lives which is more than I can say about Jeffrey, who is naive, banal and two-faced. A voyeur and eventually into some of the same rough stuff as Frank. Jeffrey’s latent darkness and Frank’s latent humanity creates a brilliant subversion of classic good vs evil tropes. I think Jeffrey’s decision to kill Frank will stick with him and gnaw at him like those little bugs for a long time... the robins have come but they’re creepy and eating bugs, neither good nor evil... the film is full of grey areas like this

    • @shadyguy23
      @shadyguy23 Год назад +3

      Having watched the movie for the first time recently, I agree more with your analysis, but I also feel like the point of Lynch is that it's possible to come away with very different interpretations like this and have all of them be equally valid. It's less about having one objective meaning and more about what you personally can take away from it.

    in Lynch's films and series, it is always about waking up, in the sense of facing the darkness, embracing it and then letting it go... : elephant man, lost highway, twin peaks, inland empire.

    Well done video essay which is illuminating. Blue Velvet is the kind of David Lynch production which has a powerful effect on me emotionally. I cared quite a bit for the Dorothy character. To me Isabella Rossellini's haunting performance is the center of the film.

    The most cunning stroke Lynch made, regarding Jeffrey's life altering foray into darkness was how he responded to his sweet aunt's natural inquisition regarding Jeffrey's appearance and demeanor after receiving his neighborly ride with Frank was "I love you, but you're gonna get it."

    I've always just seen this in a simple and practical way, for it's one of a couple of Lynch's films that do that: Frank Booth is the scariest Mortal on screen, and Frank Booth does indeed exist, and it's always a good idea to leave your home with a revolver.
    But seriously, Booth is a complete nut. He's one of the most disturbing characters of any film I've seen only to be topped by another Lynch figure: BOB.
