  • The first "How Much Food Can I Grow?" video of the season is here! I'm so excited to see how much we can grow this year! With the ever looming weather and fire stresses I'm interested to see how well the backyard garden can do. I had to buy some soil amendments and a few new packs of seeds along with some plants because I didn't start any seeds inside this year. We got off to a good start and I can't wait to see everything coming up in a couple of weeks! Spring is definitely my favourite season...you have to have so much hope to plant a garden! It's a giant dose of optimism :D

    Welcome to my 2024 BACKYARD VEGETABLE GARDEN! Let me know in the comment section below if you've got your GARDEN STARTED! Do you think the weather is going to cooperate this year? 😂 The GARDEN PLANNING program I use is from Mother Earth News and I forgot to mention it. I saw that you can purchase and gift yearly subscriptions to the Garden Planning Program and now I'm trying to come up with a contest for this year so I can give one away HERE ON THE CHANNEL. (I'm not affiliated with them at all but I do love their articles and the planner!)

    I live in 6b in Oklahoma. I have planted onions, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, beets,basil, Marigold along with bunch of flowers. The iris, tulips and daffodils have bloomed. I purchased a greenstalk tower and filled it with strawberries. I've been harvesting some. Hopefully the weather will turn warm and I can get warm weather crops in.

      That is awesome! I haven't harvested anything quite yet! I definitely could have put the broccoli, beets and basil in too!

    Thanks for doing this series again, it’s fun to see how much you end up with! The USDA redid the growing zones this year and my area of SE Georgia is now in 9a instead of 8b because of climate change. Needless to say the heat is a problem for me! I have all my warm weather crops in already, peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, etc. and my cool weather crops like Kale, broccoli, and cabbage are out of the garden already. I had too many squash and sweet potatoes last year so I’m not planting any, I’ll just accept any volunteers. My garlic, onions, and potatoes will be coming out of the garden late next month and I’ll put in okra and gourds, my hot weather crops.

      I really want to check out the new zone map! It really makes sense that they changed it. Our apple blossoms are about three weeks earlier this year and things are warming up really fast! I hope we don’t get hit with a late hard frost. Our warm weather crops usually go in third weekend in May but we might be able to get away with sooner this year!

    Oh wow, you actually have a slightly longer growing season than I do in NY. My last frost is May 17th and my first frost is Oct 1st. This week I'll be planting out onions, brassicas, potatoes, lettuce, and direct seeding carrots, radishes, peas, spinach, beets, and more lettuce.

      It's always interesting to check out the different growing times in different places! That really surprises me actually! I think that the East Coast is a bit chillier generally though? Sounds a lot like what I am getting planted this month!

    Oh wow!! You have so many seeds! And just as many amazing beds to plant everything! That is amazing! So hoping I can get a nice house some day with a big garden and put in beds like that! So cool!! Great job with the video!

      Thank you! So nice of you to come and check it out :) I'm very excited about this year. I'm going to give it my best again and see how much we can grow! I have my fingers crossed that it will do better than 2022 (last year I didn't try very hard lol.) My videos are easy compared to figuring out how to livestream haha I think I finally got Discord set up :P

    I’m a new gardener. I’m starting small with a raised bed. I’m going to try to grow tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro. My own salsa garden. 😊 Of course I’ve killed every house plant I’ve tried to grow, so I may end up with nothing.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  4 месяца назад +1

      Don’t judge your vegetable garden growing abilities by your house plant growing abilities! I can’t keep very many plants alive in the house at all! It’s great to start small and expand over time! 🪴

    You plant way more than we do. I wonder if I can get Harvey to make some raised beds. This year we are planting corn instead of pumpkin as I have lots of pumpkin left. We also plant lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peppers, eggplant, jalapeno's and I plant my herbs in various boxes and pots around the yard.

      Over the past couple of years I've been trying to scale it back a bit (unsuccessfully lol) because we aren't a family of five anymore and it's a bit of struggle to eat it all up! I will be planting more this weekend...all the tomatoes, herbs, melons, cucumber etc... If I don't need it it's always nice to donate to charity or share with friends :D

    You're going to have a great garden. We planted horseradish in 2001 and wound up digging it up. The roots spread like mad and it was popping up in the lawn.

    • @JessicaWanders

      Thanks for letting me know about the horseradish! Maybe it’ll be okay confined to a raised bed but I’ll have to keep an eye on it 👁️👍🏼

    Love your gardening. I only have seed starts blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries are all coming back. but we have had tornados that hit our yard lots of tree down and then a bunch of rain every few days. Havent been able to get anything in the ground yet.

      Ughh the unpredictable weather here is hard to navigate. Out apple trees are blossoming three weeks early this year so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we don’t get another hard frost…🤞🏼 Nothing compared to tornadoes though 😳😖

    Just starting out year 2 of learning to garden over here in Ottawa, ON. Kale, spinach and radishes are in the beds....will have to get some mesh up soon to battle the deer!

    My cousin and I were thinking of some gardening this year but unfortunately it’s looking like a pause again due to other factors. I am tempted to try and get at least a small raised bed for herbs outside my apartment but haven’t seen any at a reasonable price yet.

    This is the part of gardening season that makes me sad. Soooo many seeds and never enough garden space! And if I dug all the beds I want we'd have toooo much food and it would go to waste. What's the oldest seeds you hand still plant successfully? Mine are 10 year old san marzano tomatoes.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  4 месяца назад

      I've planted 5 year old seeds successfully. I think just fewer and fewer of them germinate over time. Ohh San Marzano is a nice tomato 🧡 If I have too much there are always friends, relatives or the food bank! Maybe I'll be donating pumpkin/squash this year lol

    When you pull apart the leeks and bunching onions like that do a lot of them die or do they usually do ok?

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  4 месяца назад +1

      They usually do just fine :) Sometimes there are very small ones that don't make the transfer but there are usually loads to choose from. I'll make sure to show how they're doing in May!

    I am itching to get the garden going. Too early here in pa. I’m growing a few new things. Growing more potatoes this year. Growing pumpkin too….although I’ve struggled with it. Trying a new variety. I still need to empty canning jars. I have a few more months to go before I need empty jars. I’m hopeful for a garden this year.I’ve created a ton of garden space this year. Getting holes in the freezer for the mountain of zucchini I usually get.i can grow the heck out of beans and zucchini. 🩷💙💚🧡❤️🦋🦋🦋

      Excellent Carol! I'm starting to see a lot more room in my freezers (for more pumpkn?? ughh lol) I've tried to scale back on things that take up a lot of space but don't produce too much in favour of things that produce more. Happy gardening!

      @@JessicaWanders I made a list of veggies I can grow that we eat. I’m growing the top veggies on the list. My goal is to significantly lessen cans from the store. Good luck this year and enjoy your vacation.
