The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, which are sacred Vishnu temples mentioned in the works of the Alvars (Tamil poet-saints).
The temple complex is vast and covers an area of about 156 acres, making it one of the largest temple complexes in India. The architecture of the temple is a mix of Dravidian and Vijayanagara styles. It is enclosed by seven concentric walls, representing the seven prakaras (enclosures) of the temple.
