    @CGPGrey It's not just a "feeling" you have about using pen and paper being more "real." Multiple MRI studies have found we use different parts of the brain when writing by hand than when we are digitizing. Same for reading a physical book vs. an ebook.

    Huh, this episode really re-framed productivity systems for me. Once or twice every year I try and fail to get into a todo-app. "If I can adjust myself to this app, I will be more productive". But I don't have any needs that the apps would fill. Trying to engineer a need that the app would solve is silly! I'm embracing my little notebook to-do lists. #PaperPositivity

      Did you try... Kanban-like methods?
      Like you have a white board with little papers or post-its, you can do a lot with that! :)
      + you can do a mix with a calendar if you got scheduled events

    • @LayerMM12P
      @LayerMM12P 4 года назад +1

      Kanban-like works well for that, I agree. I've been using Trello exclusively for almost 3 years, and it really helps to keep an overview. Got myself a board with a weekly "Done" column, with a "High priority" and "Bonus" column for tasks, and a "Backlog" column that doubles as a calendar and a reminder for tasks that cannot be done in the current week. I think the simple idea of having everything to do clearly laid out in cards before you already makes it easier for the brain to keep the overview and pick one out to start doing.

      @@LayerMM12P I totally agree : being able to visualize and assemble your tasks according to a theme, a project, make your goals clearer :)

    I have a problem with the core value production thing at around 1:08:00, here is why:
    If you are a programmer, you don't always want to be typing, you might want to stop and think about what you are doing. Reading back what you wrote so far or simply go through the beats in your mind to see, if you have missed something, sketching ideas on paper or something like that.
    If the task at hand is on your mind, you are working, whether your fingers are moving or not. You typing words into your computer is the expression of the mental work you have done, not the main part of the work itself.
    Generating and refining ideas is value creation, coding if the realisation of that value. The written Code then is the manifestation of that value, but the value itself is the idea.
    So not only do you have to think about when you are creating core value, but also about what core value is and how you create it. The coffee break might actually be the most productive time of the day, if your mind gets a breather and has time to declutter to unveil the solution you have been thingking about so hard the last hour...

      I am an artist, so I have a very similar relationship to work. The ideating and idle thinking about my projects is just as vital as the actual time an outsider can see me working on that project. I would consider this all core value creation time thought. Things that would not fit into this category might be scheduling studio time, creating invoices, writing a project description. They are all associated tasks that need to get done, but aren't themselves the core of my work.

      I completely agree with you, but I think that's why grey said "writing or pacing and talking my script out loud" that pacing and talking sounds like it's a way for him to think about stuff in a directed manner
      And your coffee break think sounds like his "work walk"? Which I assume he just uses a different timer for
      I get what you are saying, those are all important moments, and I agree with you, but I also know that my brain would eventually start cheating that system if "taking a coffee break" were seen as "vital work"
      Maybe grey fears he'd do the same?

    • @NochSoEinKaddiFan
      @NochSoEinKaddiFan 4 месяца назад

      @@madman19931612 Very possible that you could incentivise your brain to cheat itself, making yourself think you are working when you really aren't.

    Notion has become my go to for managing my lists, tasks and projects. The app can be super simple with its starting templates/ user-shared templates that you can download- but on the flipside it is also wildly customizable for creatives or those who want a bit more than a simple to do list. On top of to-do-list templates, they also have calendar and project templates, you can also import your google calendars etc. The possibilities with Notion are endless and having multiple calendars for projects and a master to-do-list on Notion has really helped me stay on top of my work and life. + Notion is free (:

    The topic is interesting but the irony is that there are too much ads in between, which waste a lot of the listeners and unproductive. I would not mind many ads for the videos animation like the one done by CPGrey, cause I know how much effort is put into it. However, this kind of video is just a recording that has only audio editing needed. It kinda sucks to ruin good podcast like this with a little greediness.

    • @adriannaoshea
      @adriannaoshea 2 года назад +5

      I don't think this is fair to say. A 2 hour podcast is likely a 3 or 4 hour conversation. That conversation needs to be reviewed to extract the core of the content. That content needs to be heavily edited for proper levels as well as removing dead air, bumps, clicks, random motorcycles, etc. I would guess its at least a 10-12 hour production. This is real work and ads are what pay the bills.

    • @typical_watcher4599
      @typical_watcher4599 2 года назад +1

      @@adriannaoshea Look, I am not against the ads, I am against excessive ads. I did both video editing and also pod cast and I understand the work in it. But originally posting this with a least 6 ads in-between for a listening podcast is really inconsiderate to those who listeners.
      Will you say that the 5 minute highly complex animated video will take much less time than audio like 20-30 hours of recording and editing? My point is the ad number should be same as the 5 minute video since almost similar effort is
      put into it.
      The is a listening podcast about productivity, meaning a listener typically is doing something to be more productive while and not staring at the screen which contains no relevant information, but excessive ads defeats is purpose and contradicts the message it wants to convey.
