  • Tonight we're thumbing through an astronomy book published before the United States was founded, and before EITHER Uranus or Neptune was discovered. Let me know what part of it you'd like to explore further next time.

11:18 on why "s" look like "f" in old books:
So this letter ſ is a "long s", it's inherited from roman cursive. It was used instead of our round s at the beginning and in the middle of words in most languages that used the roman alphabet. In typography, it was used until the late 18th century when it was replaced by the s we know and use today
Also, may I recommend investing in a futon lectern for these old books ? They're soft but firm cushions which help you to prop up your books in a way that doesn't damage the binding while you read it. Old books, and specifically 16th and 18th century books are not meant to be open wide and doing so repeatedly could deteriorate the sewing and the leather. Just giving you this piece of advice as a book conservator. You seem to like old books and surely want to keep them safe :)

  • @wukket
    @wukket 9 месяцев назад +23

It would probably blow the authors mind to see how many people his book as reached from your video alone. These kind of numbers were insanely rare for the time, as books were more difficult to create, therefore more difficult to spread to large groups of people…especially world-wide lol
and we all know you’re definitely gonna get more views too. So that’s just a crazy thing to think about. This author dude would have been more than happy to have his book in a few universities and a handful of libraries in Europe and America. And you’re sitting here showing it to potentially millions of people.
Oh how far we have come.

so the "s" looking like an "f" in some words vs others was another variant of the letter "s" (tall version) which was used to separate between hard "s" and soft "s" hence in the word "persons" had only the first "s" changed to the "f" looking "s". the "f" looking s was a soft "s" and the typical "s" being a hard "s"

The Ancient Greek quote by Hieroc. (Hierocles? not sure) , 8:01, roughly translates to "Science cleanses the Logical Soul". Word to word should be something like "Logical Soul's cleansing are the Mathematical Sciences". Couldn't locate another comment about it so here it is. Nice video!

@@LetsFindOut1 I think it's sort of open to interpretation. Could it also be a "mockery"? After looking around for the full name of a philosopher/astronomer/mathematician i could only find information about Hierocles of Alexandria. Probably this was the person's full name that was cut short for either typography reasons or to show disrespect (which is likely also). So i read the wikipedia page and it's not a big one, but it also says this part "Hierocles argued against astrological fatalism on the basis that it is supported by an irrational necessity rather than a divine, rational Providence of God.[3] For the same reason, he opposed theurgic and magic practices as they were attempts to supersede the divine providential order.[3]". There are quite a few quotes of Hierocles on the internet, but not the one located in this book, and not any i found with similar context as well. Was wondering, since the book is from the 18th century, if the use of a quote, in that manner, could be attributed to the Renaissance. Turns out that even in the wikipedia of Hierocles it is mentioned that he enjoyed a great reputation during the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Maybe quoting got popular during that era, since the knowledge of the quote alone would be a thousand times more difficult to get than it is now, with the internet and public libraries, for example. I suppose it carried more value and could be both used for either paying tribute or challenge/mock another philosopher's beliefs. Link for wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierocles_of_Alexandria

Please be careful with this book, as archivist-librarian these books need extra care, like wearing gloves, not hot temperature, low humidity, away from places that bugs can reach, in a special case, not in a smoking area, away from sunlight. It looks precious, you are holding a museum artifact. Keep it in a good state if you want to make it last.
Love your videos, Keep up with the great job 👍 kisses 💚
Ps sometimes in these cases the ink can contain lead. Some mercury. if it is coloured with green paint, arsenic

I believe the "f" is actually called a "medial S", it's an old form of the lowercase s but there's so many rules to it. one of it being, the medial s cannot be used at the end of a word (or a sentence).

It appears the book may have belonged to Rowland Burdon (1756-1838) an English politician, banker, and businessman. He attended University College at Oxford, beginning in 1773, which may match the inside, hand-written inscription, though it's hard to tell. Can't say for sure, but it would be very interesting if it were him.

I can make out ‘Univ Coll’ and ‘Oxon’ (short hand for Oxfordshire, still used today) so I would be inclined to agree

I like your addition of Lord Bacon being “almost the father of the scientific method”. What we know of today as the “scientific method” was developed 500+ years before Lord Bacons time, by a prominent Muslim scholar in the Middle East. Around 1000 ce, Ibn al-Haytham created what we know of today as the “scientific method”. It consisted of a repeating cycle of observation, hypothesis, experimentation, and the need for independent verification.

The s written like an f without the cross hatchback is there for longer sounding s, the s with a longer s sound is written taller. The placement in the word isn't why it is written that way, that would make writing with it confusing

This book was owned by Rowland Burdon (1756-1838), who studied law at University College, Oxford in 1773 (Univ. Coll. Oxon. in the upper right corner). He probably obtained this book during his studies at Oxford between 1773-1779. Very cool!

This made me go look through all my books cause I remember finding some at school and at book stores that were old. And I just remembered out of my all my books I have a book that is actually before it was finalized and published! Which I think is cool but definitely not as cool as this
