Proscribing punishment for failure to hit some arbitrary daily reading goal sounds like a sure fire way to make people not want to pick up a book in the first place. But then, I have no human capital so what do I know.
I don’t think that there should be rules when it comes to reading books. I read books for entertainment and because I enjoy reading. I don’t set a time limit on how much I read .... oh let me read for thirty minutes or an hour .... no thank you. I don’t need an accountability partner to remind me about how much I have / have not read. I find an author I like and I read their books especially if it’s Penelope Douglas, Crystal Kaswell, April Wilson, Gwyn McNamee. Reading if it’s not for pleasure then it’s certainly not worth starting. “Reading is for the sake of pleasure that it gives and gives alone”.
I like the idea of audiobooks for when I’m doing crafts because it uses a separate part of my brain (I don’t like playing videos in the background because I can’t look at the video), but I just hate hearing people reading to me. I’m very particular about the audiobook reader, and most of the time, I just choose to read physically. I hate when popular channels have misleading titles like that! How do they keep viewers when they overtly lie like that?!
It's been my experience that overt liars can keep - and even increase - viewers as long as they're telling the kinds of lies their viewers want to believe. You see that a LOT in political 'commentary' channels, for instance ...
When some RUclips presenter is monomaniacally focused on anything and deals in stupid buzzwords I find myself pretty quick to dismiss them because they're pretty dull dudebros. . .
"Might want to check his basement" lol. My kids watch a lot of RUclipsrs who talk like this. Check out "Matpat" of Game Theory or Film Theory, for the epitome of this style of talking. I can't even be in the same room when they're watching him. And this guy has millions and millions of subscribers.
I was also recommended that video, but I didn't watch it because I assumed that it wouldn't be very insightful. I assumed that all of his books fall into the category of self-help/productivity. That's my prediction. Now I'm going to watch your video to see much I got right and what I missed. I hope the teenagers you know, Steve, are not like these bros. Or maybe they are, and you are planning to retire at 29 after following their tips.
I don't have any issues with counting audiobooks as reading. I am an atrocious listener and audio books are so long that I am impressed that anyone can prefer audiobooks, and yet many on booktube clearly do and understand what they've heard. But I don't know how honest O'Brien is. He wants to retire at 25, so lying must necessarily be his modus operandi.
Bailing on a book is perfectly acceptable. I have bailed on many books that just irritated me for different reasons. Why should I continue to be irritated? It's just like any other relationship. If the other member of the relationship isn't working for you, bail out.
I know people who say they don’t have time to read, or rather I did know until I became a recluse, and their excuse was they were too busy and even, once, that books were messy. Time? I used to ask whether they watched tv. Of course they did and probably still do. I don’t know why having lots of books was/is equated with mess. I admit to not worrying too much about mess. Clean yes, especially now during this pandemic, but a few more books or craft projects? No. I think there is an underlying fear of learning, if not loathing, a reverse snobbery. Certainly if I ever said I was a classically trained pianist and that I love Bach then I was immediately assumed to be someone to somehow bring down. Sad.
Ah 'the young' are a breed unto themselves. Every generation is, I'm sure. Hype and ego command huge followings. Remember, the younger book tubers doubtless have a larger fan base due to far more youngsters / admirers using the internet 🦉often they are quite money oriented only. I'd avoid watching such channels completely, just so you don't get 'contaminated' by their annoyances.
What? His human capital? Eh? Perhaps his ability to talk with others, and so to make him more appealing to others? Who knows? I’ve tried and tried and tried to use audiobooks. Apparently I’m almost completely a visual learner...my mind drifts off and ten minutes later I don’t know what happened. Most annoying. Still, I can use them for books I’ve already read, when doing the dreaded housework. ETA: he sounds like the most boring teachers I’ve ever encountered.
Gail I have the same experience with audio books. My mind slips away. If this happens with the written word I can pick up where I left off but with audio books that annoying reader doesn't notice and just carries on without me!
Nate wanting to increase his "human capital" is white speak that signifies his innate desire to own people of color. Could you make a video about how Nate is not an ally?
I read seven books during this video.
HAH! I think quite a few BookTubers will have that reaction ...
I can't believe I'm 30 and haven't retired yet, even though I read all these years - I want my money back! 😂
I love when you dig into these clowns, Steve. It truly brings me joy.
It’s midnight. I’m watching this video, and I’m screaming and laughing. I live in an apartment building, Steve; my behavior could be problematic.
Simply introduce the other people in your building to the Wonder of Steve - then you can all laugh and scream together!
I laughed out loud when you mentioned xerxes' human capital and my girlfriend gave me 'wtf is wrong with you' look. thank you steve, made my day
Hi, I’m Don Quixote! I read 1 book of chivalry a day and here’s what happened.
Steve having more charisma than Nate, whilst being pants-less and with minimal hygiene, is an art form. 😅❤️
Steve does shower daily btw, he says in another of his videos.
Maybe it's the not-wearing-pants that's the key?
Gem Jem I was calling back to a comment Steve himself made in this video.
Steve Donoghue 😂 Certainly can’t hurt!
“I’m not even wearing pants!” gets me every time.
I read 4 books this week. I should be ready to retire tomorrow

Hee - I have to admit, I'm loving how so many viewers are just running with that "human capital" line ...

I think that a lot of people who read self help books recognize how shallow they are and then move on to other things.
I watched Nate's video and it's absolutely unbearable. He actually refers to reading as "consuming content." 🤦♂️
“maybe we should check his basement” 😂

"Maybe we should check his basement" made me chuckle. I'll go give his video a wee nosie ...
a wee nosie!

Human collateral?!? Does the dude have slaves? If so, I'm quite sure he's in the wrong century
Who's the funniest video I've ever seen. I'm still laughing. I'm scared to see the video.

😂 Some people will never understand the love of reading!
why can't people just read for the joy of it
Most people these days would rather blow their brains out than even touch a book.

The dudebros who are hyper-focused on their phones: See my other comment.
every imagination of the heart of man is only evil and that continually.
Reading is neither good nor bad.
