    forgot to mention: this thing casts amazing! due to it's slim shape, low loop count, and supple loop material, this thing will cast as far as you want depending on how much weight you want to add. i found that 4-5 oz pyramids cast the furthest. careful though, the harder you cast, the greater the chance the bait could slip off the bare hook. squid works best, while anchovies and other fish were much too soft.

    I was surf fishing one day and I thought I set the hook on a perch or somthing, but I reeled It in and I hooked a crab on its mouth parts.

    WOW, Thanks for sharing. I wanted to make some that would fit in my current tackle box. That will also work for crawfish catching to. Already have those loops and line.

    Inspired to try a lighter unit for quickly catching mangrove crabs for bait. They're all over the place near the water except in the water. In Indonesia so no worries about regulations yet. But will definitely release females.

    Was wondering what if you snag the bottom? Wont you lose the whole rig because the line of the loop looks impossible to snap off.

  • @KatiePhongh

    Ha! I surprised that it actually worked. From the looks of it I was thinking to ought to be called the Oregon Crab Feeder.

    • @ishwithfish

      totally works! i actually built a couple myself, but trying to figure best way to replace hook with better bait pin so i don't get a ticket...

    I used to use one of those off of the north jetty on the mouth of the Columbia River. It worked really well until I lost it in the rocks. I haven't seen one in years

      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад

      right on, you're the only other reference i've heard seeing one before lol. there's a couple left on eBay here and there, i wonder if this vid will sell them out.

      Ish With Fish I wouldn't be surprised

    Maybe reverse the direction of the hook. Definitely less snagging if that is an issue. If You do, Your added cork will secure the bait regardless of the direction of the point.

    Modify the ring with some wires so the bate is in like a small cage instead of a hook.

    Now we are going to want to make that style and see what happens..does look cool as heck though. The single piece or steel seems like an easier make than the cage bending and tearing up our gloves and hands.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад

      100% correct! it casts amazingly well. pretty much as far as you want depending on the weight you attach.

    Dig the vintage design of that thing! Was this shot the same day as the "Cliff Crabbin'" video or are you just hitting up my hood all the time now? 😂

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад +1

      yup i made a special run there soon after to test some snares lol. you'll see it again in upcoming review vids.

    • @user-kk6lc1th2r
      @user-kk6lc1th2r 6 лет назад +1

      That's actually really smart. Larger than average swells aside, you've got access to deeper water with not a lot of pressure on the things you're trying to catch plus the advantage of snaring more vertically which makes it easier to catch things as opposed to horizontally from shore where you're constantly fighting the waves in trying not to introduce slack 👍

    Could wrap bait in netting to secure from thieving little crabs

      left them as-is, just as they appeared in the unboxing:) still catches crabs xx years later

  • @lifeofeels8271
    @lifeofeels8271 5 лет назад +1

    Is it still a legal snare if there is a hook on it? I know it's not legal in California to catch any crustacean on hook and line. Just wondering.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  5 лет назад +1

      it's a grey area. for the purpose of the video, i negated the destructive hook point with a cork to turn the hook into a bait pin. i just really wanted to film a catch with it and it totally works as shown. tbh i haven't used it since because i don't want to have this discussion with a warden lol
