- Textbook for Prayer Class: The Way of a Pilgrim is the English title of an anonymous Russian, seemingly autobiographical, work, possibly by an Athonite monk, detailing the narrator's journey across the country while practicing the Jesus Prayer devoutly, with the help of a prayer rope and the study of the Philokalia. The Russian title of the book is actually much longer than its English translation: "Откровенные рассказы странника духовному своему отцу" - literally, "Candid tales of a pilgrim to his spiritual father'.
This masterpiece, as described in Europe by theologians who are spiritually immersed in it, speaks of an Orthodox Christian pilgrim who travels with the thirst to delve into the knowledge and application of the saying of the Apostle Paul who says "pray unceasingly".
This is beautiful. For the whole world ❤
I have listened to this again & again. Does anyone else keep re-listening to it? Its so simply yet so deep, & it just keeps pulling me back. I adore this book, & the narrator is just perfect for it too.
I listen to it as I go to sleep. It’s so wonderful. I think his voice and reading is excellent also.
@@frisco61 yes his voice really helps make the character come alive, I've been trying to work out his accent
I have been Orthodox for 30 years and have reread the Way of the Pilgrim as have most others that I know.
There is something beautiful that takes us on our own spiritual… inward journey which reveals something new every time the book is read.
It is for me ‘other-worldly’ if that makes sense.
It doesn’t take long before the Pilgrim becomes me. This is what draws people back in my opinion, in a way that I’ve felt before when reading some of C.S. Lewis’s writings.
His voice is so perfect and calming for the story. I can fall asleep to it
I have the same experience! It is like a fresh river and it feels like a new layer is opened up by this book and readers voice and music behind. I am happy of fellows around the world having the same experience
Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me.
Can everyone here please pray for me that I have a yearning for learning of all things related to pray and worship with My Lord. I say every Saturday I'm going to Liturgy but I'm lazy and go back to sleep. I cannot stand this slothfulness!
we are so blessed to have so many audiobooks in youtube, I also enjoyed ruclips.net/video/GeTVWuDNyyY/видео.html = love the daily readings and reflections by fr Mike shmitz, jonathan roumie from the chosen, mark washlberg, sister miriam chika anyanwu and specialy from Jim caviezelm.
Praying for you my sister in Christ. Satan wants to keep you from God, from hearing the Gospel and taking part in the mass.
Hello!! I was drawn to reply to you by your name (of all things)… there’s a wonderful saint I just discovered that I am in love with. Saint Matrona the blind of Moscow. A woman from Tennessee wrote a book about her. Welcome sister in Christ 💜
Prayers are with you. God for sure has heard YOUR PRAYERS.
God Loves You…This is the Day the Lord has Made…keep praying 🙏
Amen, O'Lord Jesus Christ have mercy upon me a sinner. እግዚኦ መሐረነ ክርስቶስ

This beautiful book is a treasure. It was my first exposure to Orthodoxy...which led me, as a RC ex monk to an Orthodox monastery, where I saw this lovingly lived out and taught. This is the Ancient faith, the hidden treasure...
I respect you very much, but why not be an Orthodox in communion with Rome? Even the early Ecumenical Councils state that only the Patriarchate of Rome has assurance of indestructibility until the End of Time.
@@CherubimCreationsFlowery language is very common in the ecumenical councils. For example, one council says the gates of hades will never prevail against the Emperor and his Empire. Many other times the same is said of Constantinople. “Orthodox in communion with Rome” doesnt exist, because RC “infallibly” defines dogma that Orthodox can not believe, such as fillioque, denial of essence energies (taught at Florence even tho Palamite Catholics profess it), original sin, the Beatific vision, papal infallibility, etc.
One easy way to prove that Rome is not saved from destruction/corruption is to cite Pauls letter to The Romans, where he warns them that they can have their branch snapped off if they become puffed up with pride, which is what the Orthodox believe actually happened. There would be no need for this warning if Rome couldnt fall away. I also argue the current state of the Papacy is single handedly leading many, including myself, to Orthodoxy from Catholicism. Yes, Orthodox have a problem with ecumenism and perrenialism as well, but the difference is we dont claim to be infallible. In the RC system, the Pope can not be a heretic. In the Orthodox system, I have no problem saying Bartholomew or Kiril might be heretics. Until they are synodally dismissed, its not my problem as a layperson
I am a Roman Catholic but I love this book. I especially love how the Jesus Prayer is playing in the background and comes to the front at the end of a chapter.
Even for a Catholic there is much in our shared tradition of the first 1000 years of Christianity. I long for the day that we might reunite.
You say this as if the prayer of the heart does not belong to the Catholic Church; it does. Prayer is universal and people of all faiths have it as a gift from God. God is not denominational and calls all his children to prayer of the heart.
I think it is interestig that all faiths use beads in one form or another for prayer.
They should make a movie of this story. I think it would be magical 🙏❤
even better we ourselves take a similar journey :)
I want to do a similar journey this Lent, 400 miles for 40 days, with Sunday rest days. I have the perfect location 400 miles away from my front door, a Holy place, & a tent. My health is poor though & my ankle is bad. I know the pilgrim in this tale goes through much adversary, & that my ankle problem shouldn't put me off, but it is concerning me. Walking far makes my limp worse, but no doctor has yet been able to help. Easter is early this year too, so I would likely be camping in frost.
What a beautiful, powerful, peaceful book! And nice job, narrator! God be with us all. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
Someone needs to invent an alarm clock (physical AND an app) with the background Jesus Prayer. That would be wonderful to wake up to, and also fall asleep to.
Yes! I haven't found one yet and would love that
ruclips.net/video/hpu-3EDa-xw/видео.html Love to listen to it while I meditate with the rosary! Best for a restful sleep.
Good idea. I'm pretty sure that's already possible with a smart phone. Just find an mp3 file of the Jesus Prayer and set it to be your alarm.
There is something called tube ripper where you can make the video into an mp3 or other file formats. Then you could use an mp3 clipper to shorten it. I posted the link to the original song elsewhere in my replies. Click my name and you'll see it.
Lesk? is a composer who who has done hour long loops of the prayer in a few languages. Here on youtube

This is the sweetest nectar that ever touched my ears. The greatest culture is the culture of God. No knowledge comes even closer to this. Nothing surpasses the tenderness of the intimate contact with the Divine. I shall listen again!
Since Easter past this has been a daily listen. While working, sleeping, sitting around at home. Actually found this on another RUclips channel but that download disappeared and this one became available. It is all good! Listen mostly to mentality absorb the spiritual nourishment. Blessings to all! 🙏
Great book .try Rusian Pilgrim great as well blessing
@@bernadettecros855 Thanks for the recommendation. Never heard of this one. Is it a continuation of this Pilgrim's life?
Best book ive ever read.. ❤
You're a wonderful narrator, full of heart. Thank you so much🙏🌹 being still just a catechumen this is now my favorite book ever💜☦️🙏🕯️🌹🌹🌹🦋
This is a wonderful book which i have learned many times and heard many times and still i will learn because is a special treasure from orthodox christianity
I’m not gay but the more i am listening, I am falling in love with the soul of the narrator. Who are you? We want to hear more from your sweet voice , if possible Philokalia❤ !
Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me
This is good - Rich in context, and you have a reading voice and pace that is enjoyable
For those that are curious this is the Helen Bacovin translation which I think is my favourite. The original is a 19th C Russian work.
Thank you! God Bless you! 🙏🏻
A great book on my journey to faith. Blessings.
I am not a Christian yet I am so fortunate that this account resonates so deeply with me. Priceless! Truth knows no boundaries and is all inclusive. Ceaseless prayer is the heart of other religions as well, this is Universal message for all. Ceaseless repletion of the Holy Name is the essence of the Sikh faith. 🙏🏼
Thank you for this
Classic book, thank you
Dear Tennessee girl, You

Yes. It is all true.
Haridas Thakura was the appointed acharya (teacher) of the Holy Names of God found in the great prayer or Maha Mantra: "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare - Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare." The theology behind the Jesus Prayer and the Maha Mantra beautifully support each other. There is nothing more valuable than the Holy Name (in either tradition) because for those who have discovered it, receive the greatest blessing. This is because out of His great compassion and unconditional love, God has embedded within His Name the ultimate gift, what I have renamed, the Spiritual Elevator. When eventually it is time for us to die, the doors of this elevator will open and immediately take us to spiritual realm, bypassing all yet achieving all. This is His gift.
Jesus is a living true, one and only God. He cannot be compared to any Polytheistic deity. The Jesus Prayer is based on scripture. Firstly, we serve an all merciful God. Second, Jesus said ask anything in my Name. Third, the Apostle Paul said, *Pray unceasingly*. This whole story came about by searching how to accomplish the third point. And fourthly, we are sinners, in need of a Saviour. The only Saviour is Our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only one who atoned for the sins of everyone in this world.
It is a good addition

Total Concentration Jesus Prayer Breathing: Constant!
I didn't knew there is an English translation of it. Thank you.
I always considered ceaseless prayer as a relationship with God always talking to him, Enoch walked with God and was translated to God, in the beginning before the fall Adam walked with God,talked with God, that is prayer.
To lie down and listen to this and get an ad every 5 minutes is a real pain...kinnda defeats the message.
Satan sucks.
Always trying to break our focus on good things.
For me its 2 minutes
Before I had premium I’d get ads every 7 minutes or so for the first 2 hours, but it may have given up as the rest was ad free!
I understand
Tell yourself you can sleep in anither morning but sunday is the day for God snd i will do it for my Lord ❤
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, how to go about finding the Spiritual Father? Any advice from the experienced?
You must ask God or a saint about it and go to your priest and ask him too be your spiritual father! See if he will agree if not follow the will of the lord and ask next priest to become your spiritual father until one agrees then you have received Gods will❤ May heaven consume you in Jesus name and Mary’s name!
THE PRAYER WILL LEAD YOU.❤
@@gailkoelmeyer7650 🙏 I prayfully hope.

I dont have the book. This reading is very spiritually edifying. Only one thing....does it say rosary in the book? The orthodox use a special prayer rope. Each knot is made up of 9 knots tied in the form of a cross. Rosary is a catholic prayer rope of just beads. Anyway, blessings to all. ✝️
That is a prayer rope which can be used to say the Jesus prayer. It takes intense prayer to create. If you are interested, I do make them
Im not sure if they mention the prayer rope in the book
@angelarice6452 Thankyou very much Angela. I have many komboskini from the Nativity of the theotokos monestary in saxonburgh pa.
I thought he called it a prayer rope in this narration.
Is this available to purchase as a download as it’s really helping me in being able to understand better
@Are You Awake? Great question. I have tried to find it as a CD but found nothing. So very glad that I can at least download on RUclips and listen to it often. Blessings!

Does anybody know if this is a true account or an allegory kind of like pilgrims progress? Either way it is a tremendously beautiful work. Christ is ascended!☦☦☦
