For a trip, I carried a folding wine opener because TSA website said it's ok. Airport Security confiscated it because it has a tiny "blade" and all blades are forbidden. I even cited their website verbally to no avail. They don't even know their own rules.
Yeah, I know people who got tools like a key ring wrench taken off them. So this is really just a pipe dream. Would be better to support groups who are against these nanny state policies.
agreed, I was bummed when I heard about THE SKA brand decision but completely understand the knife-less addition to the market - I had a thumb-cuff key ring that I got from Alcatraz Prison Souvenir Shop - it was bronze and had the best patina...anyways a dickhead customs officer declared it dangerous and confiscated from my keys going from Brisbane to Tasmania lol.
Regarding the SAK question... I'd like to have the option to "Build My Own". Let me select those implements that are ideal for me. I could then opt to have the multi tool assembled for me or to be shipped to me with instructions for me to assemble it myself. Regarding the cutting board question... End grain boards are always better.
I'd pay double for a bespoke set of tools. It couldn't be so hard to set up with some restrictions as they are "paired" in line (e.g. bottle opener and tin opener, small blade and large blade) but could see a lot of use for a more mixed set. The 58mm Manager tool is very useful for the small Philips screw driver and bottle opener but on a 74 or 91 mm with the larger scissors, larger file and larger blade. However there are few of the tools on the Swiss Champ I never use and some I use more often than I would have though before owning one.
i have a 4-layer unicorn SAK idea that is totally workable to assemble, and i would easily pay double for a factory-made one. i think victorinox really should create a knife builder webpage that lets you create workable custom configurations. my specific dream is the explorer, but remove the opener layer, replace the small blade with the combo tool, add a wood saw, and include the parcel hook version with the file on its spine, along with a keyring pocket hook and of course plus scales outfitted with all the accessory tools.
I've got a tip about wooden cutting boards. After you use them for a while and they get all marked up and nasty looking, you can refresh them by just taking a belt sander to them. Clean them right up but do the whole surface (not just the bad area) to keep them flat. Then just coat it with a food grade mineral oil and you're back in business.
After sharpening, to fire-harden a stick point, cover the end with an oily substance (animal or vegetable) and slow roast it next to a fire rotating frequently until it is golden brown and hard.

I think metal bolsters are because wood/bone is more likely to chip or split at the ends which are also more exposed to getting knocked against something
Would love to have the blades slots filled in with some other tools as I usually carry a SAK and a larger folder. Also would be useful for situations where you can't bring in a pocket knife (concerts / festivals / courthouses / airports / schools, etc). Did people freak out this much when Leatherman put the Rebar out? It is also a bladeless multitool.
I agree, i'd prefer to carry a dedicated folding/fixed blade and a separate tool because of that very reason. People in public spaces are quite timid to knives so being able to use my tools without worrying of scaring others or being allowed to bring it into the location is a huge bonus.
I can imagine a tool with all the implements for personal grooming but larger than the Classic could sell well. I often use the scissors or nail files of my SAKs, but wish those were larger.
For me, my bladeless victorinox would be the Compact for the base. Replace the blade with a full size file. Replace the cap lifter and bottle opener with their combo tool and then add an inline phillips head in that last empty slot. 😊
I forgot I had a small multitool in my backpack and TSA said I could mail it or surrender it. I opened the blade, snapped it off, handed it to the agent, and said I'll just surrender the blade. He shrugged, took the blade, and i flew with that multitool for years all over the world until a Carribean agent decided the scissors weren't blunt enough. Got another one, snapped the blade, ground the tips off the scissors, and it's still flying. I wish everybody would come out with a blade holder model so we can remove the blade and still fly with the rest of the tool.
I had the scissors from a Swisscard confiscated in Australia. They had points! I've filed down the replacement. They've lost sight of why: it should be "can you hijack a plane with this" but it has become "can you pierce the skin". At the same time, a tactical pen is perfectly fine. 🙄
I'm from AUS also and I've posted a similar comment questioning can they actually take 91mm scissors on planes because here they would be seized. Glad it's not just me who has experienced this.
As for the "No-Knive"-Victorinoxes: I am looking forward to them. I have my tried and true Spyderco PITS Sprint. And I do not need to carry an additional knife. Also, when traveling, I can simply leave my knife at home and STILL have the tools I need otherwise. My dream would be a Midnight Manager @work without the blade.

As someone who generally carries a dedicated knife, the lack of a knife on a Swiss style tool adds welcome room for more tools with no redundancy. Note that in a lot of countries, they will still confiscate anything that looks like a SAK, knife or no.
Add some Screw Eye Hooks into the sheath of the Cold Steel Bushman and you have an easy way to lock it to a longer handle for camp clearing tasks and eyelets to make a fast bushcraft fishing pole. A reliable utility bug out blade. Bout time for Victorinox I suggested it to them, like I assume many others have, a bunch of times for years. We all have a main blade in our new favorite steel what we need is a tool set we can EDC everywhere even if our knife is stowed. All fly in/fly out jobs from mining to journalism/undercover ops need a bladeless tool - what I always suggested is just swap the blade on all 3 layer SAKs with skizzors (now the "main blade" on all the scissor less tools or a file/saw when there are scissors

I’ve been traveling with the SwissCard model with the fingernail file. The fingernail file is actually useful, it has a usable small pair of scissors, a screw bit tool, and even a straight pin. Not macho by any means, but if you’re on a business trip is some hotel room and need some scissors or other tools, its VERY handy. And TSA doesn’t seem to care one wit about it!
Unfortunately, airport security usually confiscates any scissors as well. I remember they even forced my 90 year old grandmother to hand over a tiny set of grooming scissors with a rounded tip and probably 1/2 inch "blades".
Im prepared for a potential situation on my boat. Recently we fouled our prop on some discarded rope that was floating about. My daughter was agile enough to reach and untangle but if i was on my own, i wouldn't be, since ive got bad injuries. So if that happens im imagining lashing my serrated knife to an oar or pole and sawing at it. I think it could work. Im not going in the water, knife in teeth, thats for sure! Btw i got a klein duct knife for use on the boat, as it was pretty cheap and a good size.
I'm actually really happy that victorinox is making some more bladeless tools because there's places I can't carry a knife everyday but I still need the functionality of a pocket sized multitool so having a bladeless victorinox that's bigger than the jet setter and more capable will be amazing!
I totally agree that a bladeless Explorer would be a solid tool. I'd carry it. I'd go a step farther. Take a Compact, swap out the awl for a nail file, and swap out the blade for a removable craft blade. Has a sharp edge for packages and light work, but easily removable for security. Keep the scissors. That gives you a really solid base to build from with a 3rd layer of your choice. I'd go for the Explorer layer, personally, but I can definitely see other options like the bit kit. All built on a very solid foundation that can be made TSA friendly by tossing the craft blade. I'd absolutely carry that daily.

On the whole spearhead topic - look at Asian bushcrafting and survival channels. They make arrows and spears from wood/bamboo. Regarding Victorinox - when will we get modular multitools with a selection of tools/blades we can swap as we need them? On the floating knife - can you suggest some floating fixed blades I can take on my boat when fishing? I think I have seen one from Mora somewhere, but assume there are more. On to cutting boards - invest in the more expensive wooden cutting boards with end-grain if you can, then you won't be chipping away at the wood while you are cutting. Cheers!
I have no idea beyond scale and demand why Victorinox doesn't have an online customization offering ... it would likely cost 3x for the consumer (which I'd happily pay) but I think enough people would be interested to make it profitable.
@thehellezell Victorinox doesn't have customization because I know that they don't want the headaches of fulfilling so many potential orders, returns, cancelations, and endless questions about configurations/returns/warranty/materials/etc. They're going to continue to do the usual: Come out with the various multitude of configurations and let the customer pick what's needed.

Basically just a compliment to the folding knife I already carry - scissors, awl, cork screw with eyeglass insert, bottle/can opener, magnifying lens, probably a saw since the awl will get it confiscated anyways. The bit driver might be nice, but if it was compact size without i would prefer that.
Softer woods don't dull blades as much, but they can chip them since the edge can bite deeper and get laterally stressed if the blade is torqued. Same goes for high density vs low density plastic boards.
Went to Switzerland and there are so many knives there and they have the lax knife laws except for automatics and dagger shapes. The victorinox has already done something similar for sales . The evoke was changed to have a removable thumb stud for the sales in Germany
I normally take my Leatherman Style PS, but there have been moments where TSA almost confiscated it. I now don't really want to take it because it's discontinued and such a great knifeless multitool! I have been tempted to get the Jetsetter but I don't fly enough. Would be nice to see more TSA friendly tools with pliers. The Victorinox pliers are good enough for my uses but Leathermans are superior.
I wish Leatherman did a true bladless/sawless tool. But if Swiss does bring this to the USA, I would like to see the Cyber tool 34 with a full size file in place of the main blade, remove the small blade and awl, and that would be the perfect TSA style tool.
Remember that the final determiner of what is or is not compliant, regardless of regulation, is working the only federal job you do not need a high school diploma for.
Many airports and airlines will not permit anything that might be considered a pointy objects including screwdrivers, corkscrew, pliers, box cutters and scissors. Most of the tools on a Swiss Army knife would be excluded. In Europe tiny folding blade pocket knives can be carried but not if they lock. This means technically the letter opener of the Swisscard is a fixed blade knife and illegal to carry without good reason.
Wood or plastic cutting boards are definitely best for kitchen use. Notice that doesn't include Bamboo. It's not inherently bad for blades outside of being a touch harder than most woods. But they don't feel very good to drag a knife over due to their dense and fibrous properties (more friction, feels like it grips the knife and takes more effort to keep the blade moving). That's kept to a minimum with asian knives and techniques since they're not designed with rolling chops in mind, favoring draw cuts instead.
Some bladeless options from Victorinox will be readily welcomed, I would love to have a bladeless multi-tool in my travel bag. Also, the blade on my SAK is largely redundant because I carry a locking blade knife alongside it.
Hey DCA! When storing fixed blade knives, specifically ones that come with leather sheathes, do you recommended they be kept in their sheath or stored bare? I’ve stored them both ways but when stored in sheath, the blades tend to get micro-rust spots. Love the videos! Keep up the excellent work!
I don't use plastic cutting boards since it was pointed out to me that it produces micro plastic particles when cutting into them, which in turn ends up in my food and then in me... Wood is all I use now... all that's needed is a bit more care in cleaning, especially after preparing meat or fish products... 😊
plus, so many folks have a variety of preferred folding knives, nice to have multitool options without buying another semi-redundant blade, to pair with whatever you prefer for the day.

Question I’m a firefighter and looking for a fixed blade that is light enough to not bother me when I wear it but strong enough to be used roughly and it absolutely has to be highly rust resistant as for my usage it will almost certainly get a large amount of water on it and there are times as a firefighter your at a forest fire for several hours and your so busy you genuinely don’t have time to dry your knife I would prefer something with a chitex sheathe over leather.

Gerber LMF II Infantry, solid piece of steel, has serrations for cutting ropes or seat belts, affordable (replacable), 420HC is somewhat rust resistant and easy to resharpen. Also Eickhorn has some knives that may be interesting for you. There is even a special Rescue Tool from Eickhorn. If you look more for classical knives, check out the KM2000
Look up diving knives on the internet. That is what my uncle carried when he worked for a fire department for over thirty years. He started out as a diver then was a regular fireman and just decided to carry his diving knife.
the pricier cutting boards with checkerboard patterns of blocks are best, because the wood grain in those is aligned vertically, pointing up/down rather than sideways, and doesn't dull or burr the knife edge nearly as easily
I already thought about it. My first multitool was a Victorinox climber (due to MacGyver, of course). With time, I figured out that it was a one-hand tool, or, regardless of how many tools I had on it, I could use only one at a time, and in my right hand only. Therefore, I decided to assist it with a pliers multitool, by that year the Leatherman skeletool had just debuted, so I bought it, and immediately discovered it was by far more useful than the Climber, even having less tools. The game changed: today, Leatherman are my primary multitool, Victorinox are the complementary ones. And yes, would make sense the modular separation of Victorinox. Would be very cool a multitool with 3 sections, one with the blade and the scissors, one dedicated to the pliers, corkscrew and can opener and one dedicated to the other tools (ruler, bottle opener, magnifier glass, etc). Perfectly possible. I have a cheap (and useful) knife-fork-spoon multitool, it is a 3 section toll, it can be disassembled and becomes 3 independent pieces, because when in use, you never use all of them at once.
I've been waiting for bladeless SAKs for years now, to the point that I have been considering getting one custom made. Everyday I carry a mid-sized locking pocket knife that is perfectly capable of performing all of my cutting duties. I'd love to also carry a small, pocketable multi-tool that contains all of the little SAK tools.

Both Victorinox Jetsetter and Leatherman Style PS are great for traveling. Style is a little flimsy but it gets the job done and helped me more than enough times to recommend it. For me, the ideal Victorinox would be geared towards urban trips, city breaks. It'll have scissors and nail file in one row, dedicated can and bottlecap openers in second row (the usuals with flatheads they have on majority of their knives), corkscrew on the back. Alox would be ideal here, to keep it even slimmer.
I went to a concert a month or so ago, and the venue had metal detectors, so I put my working knives in my truck. Forgot I had purchased the Companion keychain SAK and had that on my key lanyard and had that confiscated. Got lucky that I was able to get it back when I was leaving, but I’m 100% getting the Jetsetter to replace it for situations like it in the future

I look forward to a SAK Bantam tool - basically keep the bottle opener/flat head/light prybar combo tool and swap ot the blade for SAK's well praised scissors. This could be brought nearly everywhere legally and would disappear in the pocket. Or they can just make a "Jetsetter XXL"
I had a perfectly legal item taken away even with having a printout from their website. Most trips I’m checking a bag so I just throw my knife in there and it’s all good. I might try a bladeless SAK but not an expensive model.
DCA: What are the best pocket fixed blades for utility (not for self defense, unless the blade shape calls for it) and using your best judgement, are best for EDC. I know they are iconic, but I'd really like to see 3 and 4 layers without the can and bottle openers as an option: Scissors, pliers, file, driver/back tools driver for edc- saw instead of driver to make it an outdoor companion to a dedicated blade or two. Also tung oil your opinels, it helps a bit with damp.
Hey DCA- I'm currently unemployed so I find myself wearing joggers/sweatpants more often than not these days. What are some lightweight folders that can be comfortably carried in that type of 'less structured' pocket? Heavier knives tend to annoyingly pull down and bounce around in baggy pockets. If you want even more parameters: Sub 4", $100 or less, and as many opening methods as possible because I'll definitely be fidgeting around with it between job applications. Ty!
I'm a huge fan of knives from Germany and actually I write a book on pocket tools and the like. Victorinox' idea to bring out multi-tools without knife blades is an idea I've been following and suggesting for years. Not because I'm in any way against knives or knife blades, it's because of wrong redundancy. I found out that tool knives like the SAK mustn't be too thick. Those 5-layers and more are very impractical. It's much better to have two 3layered ones in each trouser pocket with complementary tools than one big one. But until now almost every Swiss Army knife has got the same basic implements, starting with the two knife blades. So it would be great to have, say, the small scissors and pliers and a Phillips and the glasses in one tool and the knife blades, Saw and file on the other one.
I can understand Victorinox making a multi tool w/out the blade or scissors makes sense and a smart move that lets them make and sell tools that that you can carry anywhere, as along as they still offer multi tools with knives. I carry a minimal money clip and CC/ID holder.

Ive got an EDC pouch that I carry with me often. In it I’ve got my EDC knife, pry bar, space pen and other bits. The thing is I really want a small multi-tool/pliers without a blade! It will never get used and is just added bulk and weight.
A new law has been on trial in France since April: carrying a knife is no longer an offence, but merely punishable by a fine (500€ = $540). This means that the police and the justice system, which are overburdened with cases to deal with (before, carrying a knife inevitably led to police custody + court), will be able to step up checks and hand out fines on a large scale. So, a blade-less SAK makes sense, as this kind of local initiative (in France for the moment) tends to spread throughout Europe.
I bought the Jetsetter specifically to be able to take it thought TSA. When it goes through the scanner for carry on luggage, the “computer” flags it as a pocket knife, which means my bag gets pulled out for hand inspection. Even though I have had this happen twice, and the hand inspection resulted in permission to carry the device, it caused me quite a delay in getting through security, as a result I no longer carry it.
@@davidgarrett5671if you have anything in your pocket you end up getting the pat down. Are you suggesting that because it would go quicker than a hand search of your carryon?
When I travelled with my Jetsetter, I would open it all the way and put it in the bin with my other pocket stuff. When they point it out, I say there is no blade and they can easily verify that and it was never a problem
I carry my Victorinox for the bottle opener. We have an amazing Mexican street taco stand that only sells glass bottles. I use a SOG spear as a "backup plan" in my house.
It's actually a great idea, and this is me speaking as a Victorinox fanboy. I mostly EDC SAKs but I also own a few nice folders which are legal here in the UK - slipjoints with blades under 3 in long. I have a Spyderco Urban in N690, Manly Wasp in S90V, Bokerplus Atlas (12C27), Byrd Tern (steel not special enough to mention lol), as well as a couple of traditional folders. I rarely carry them as I love the extra utility of a SAK. But the one you show in the thumbnail - basically a Climber with the excellent inline Phillips instead of blades - would be perfect to carry with one of my folders, plus a pair of Knipex Cobras, that would be a perfect urban EDC for me. As it is I just bought a Jetsetter as I'm flying abroad tomorrow and can't go with nothing. I'm impressed by the little Phillips driver on that, tested it on PH2 and PH1 screws and it works a treat. I can pair that up with one of my folders but as that left me without flathead / beater prying capacity, I bought a cheap but sturdy keychain prybar/flathead and voila, that with Jetsetter + folder + Knipex and I have a great urban EDC toolset.
Wow, can you make it through security with 91mm or even 58mm SAK scissors? In Australia they seize any form of scissors including old granny's nail scissors. IDK if it's true but I've also heard of large sized nail clippers being seized because they have a 'blade'.
Quick question about blade shapes. We're all familiar about the origin of the Bowie. What about blades like wharncliff , tanto , etc. Also should they re- classify the reverse tanto as the "Thomas ". Thanks for the great shows.
I carry a Leatherman every day. I use the pliers, scissors, file, and screwdrivers far more than I use the blades, although that's in part because I often have a dedicated pocket knife with better ergos. For a Swiss Army Non-Knife, I agree with a file, scissors, bit driver, and can/bottle openers as very useful. A T-handle corkscrew should probably remain as well.

To make it easier on Victorinox they should just have a "no blade" option for all their existing knives instead of making up new names or whatever like for example a Huntsman "no blade" or bladeless

I also want a little bit of fidgetiness (flickable, flipper, good crossbar, etc), and a good slicer for food prep. I want to be able to use it for about anything. I don’t mind spending $200-$300, but the cheaper the better. [In truth, I think I just want a Sebenza…] I want to be able to baton wood and use it for steak. 😂 Suggestions?
My air travel SAK would have the nail clip, nail file, scissors, toothpick, tweezers, magnifying glass, maybe an optional extra layer for Phillips, flat screwdriver/pry bar and bottle opener. Maybe wrapped in exclusive color scales so that it is quickly identifiable and a "TSA Approved" logo.
Turn the Pioneer X into a two layer by removing the blade and awl. Replace the can and bottle opener with the nail file/screwdriver combo. Call it the Travel Pioneer or Air Pioneer.
Including pioneer in the name wouldn't make sense as the awl is what makes a pioneer, just like a file makes a cadet. It's like removing the bit driver system from a cybertool but still calling it a cybertool.
@@veikkakarvonen831 good to know. Scratch the name then. The idea is to have something TSA compliant but still useful. I use a Pioneer-X as a daily carry, but have no use for the awl and the two “openers.” The can opener is pathetic and the bottle opener is fairly obsolete. However, the screwdriver ends do come in handy. I like the scales, but miss having the tweezers and toothpick.
It isn't wood. The japanese do those new cutting boards made of softer material by companies like Hasigawa and Asahi. Made specifically for use with those high rockwell, very thin blades for sashimi and sushi. I think the good ones are rubber with a wooden core.
Excellent comment regarding the Victorinox tools. My choice would be a Swiss Champ or Cybertool without the blade, the file could be seen as a weapon by TSA so I would drop even that. Not sure if the saw would be a problem, but I could do without that too. Scissors, Philipps Screwdriver, cap opener (maybe lockable like on the 111mm models - great pry tool)
Had Dublin airport security take a SAK I had ground down to comply with their own sub 60mm rule…because they measured knife blades “to the fulcrum”, same as scissors. Merely trying to ask them to allow me to retrieve the removable eye glass screw driver and tweezers had them threatening to eject me from the airport! Never flying to the US via Dublin again.
Question: What folding knife would you recommend as a sleek and elegant/ unintimidating EDC with ONLY a bottle opener in addition to the blade. I'm thinking of something like the CRKT Fial (without the wine accessories, obviously). I don't use my pocket knives daily nor heavily so a thin blade would be preferable, the bottle opener would honestly just be an excuse to carry it more often/ have more use for it. Regarding the SAK question... I'd like to have the option to "Build My Own". Let me select those implements that are ideal for me. I could then opt to have the multi tool assembled for me or to be shipped to me with instructions for me to assemble it myself.
Regarding the cutting board question... End grain boards are always better.
I'd pay double for a bespoke set of tools. It couldn't be so hard to set up with some restrictions as they are "paired" in line (e.g. bottle opener and tin opener, small blade and large blade) but could see a lot of use for a more mixed set. The 58mm Manager tool is very useful for the small Philips screw driver and bottle opener but on a 74 or 91 mm with the larger scissors, larger file and larger blade.
However there are few of the tools on the Swiss Champ I never use and some I use more often than I would have though before owning one.
i have a 4-layer unicorn SAK idea that is totally workable to assemble, and i would easily pay double for a factory-made one. i think victorinox really should create a knife builder webpage that lets you create workable custom configurations. my specific dream is the explorer, but remove the opener layer, replace the small blade with the combo tool, add a wood saw, and include the parcel hook version with the file on its spine, along with a keyring pocket hook and of course plus scales outfitted with all the accessory tools.
I've got a tip about wooden cutting boards. After you use them for a while and they get all marked up and nasty looking, you can refresh them by just taking a belt sander to them. Clean them right up but do the whole surface (not just the bad area) to keep them flat. Then just coat it with a food grade mineral oil and you're back in business.
I used to work in a five-star hotel in a major city, and this is exactly what they did.
After sharpening, to fire-harden a stick point, cover the end with an oily substance (animal or vegetable) and slow roast it next to a fire rotating frequently until it is golden brown and hard.
I was able to swap the blade layer for a combo of file/scaler tool. Would love them to replace blade layer with file.

I think metal bolsters are because wood/bone is more likely to chip or split at the ends which are also more exposed to getting knocked against something
Would love to have the blades slots filled in with some other tools as I usually carry a SAK and a larger folder. Also would be useful for situations where you can't bring in a pocket knife (concerts / festivals / courthouses / airports / schools, etc). Did people freak out this much when Leatherman put the Rebar out? It is also a bladeless multitool.
I agree, i'd prefer to carry a dedicated folding/fixed blade and a separate tool because of that very reason. People in public spaces are quite timid to knives so being able to use my tools without worrying of scaring others or being allowed to bring it into the location is a huge bonus.
I can imagine a tool with all the implements for personal grooming but larger than the Classic could sell well. I often use the scissors or nail files of my SAKs, but wish those were larger.
regarding cutting boards: you could always use a stone cutting board, cut at a 17° angle and never have to sharpen your knife again ;)

For me, my bladeless victorinox would be the Compact for the base. Replace the blade with a full size file. Replace the cap lifter and bottle opener with their combo tool and then add an inline phillips head in that last empty slot. 😊
I forgot I had a small multitool in my backpack and TSA said I could mail it or surrender it. I opened the blade, snapped it off, handed it to the agent, and said I'll just surrender the blade. He shrugged, took the blade, and i flew with that multitool for years all over the world until a Carribean agent decided the scissors weren't blunt enough. Got another one, snapped the blade, ground the tips off the scissors, and it's still flying. I wish everybody would come out with a blade holder model so we can remove the blade and still fly with the rest of the tool.
I had the scissors from a Swisscard confiscated in Australia. They had points! I've filed down the replacement.
They've lost sight of why: it should be "can you hijack a plane with this" but it has become "can you pierce the skin".
At the same time, a tactical pen is perfectly fine. 🙄
I'm from AUS also and I've posted a similar comment questioning can they actually take 91mm scissors on planes because here they would be seized. Glad it's not just me who has experienced this.

As for the "No-Knive"-Victorinoxes: I am looking forward to them. I have my tried and true Spyderco PITS Sprint. And I do not need to carry an additional knife. Also, when traveling, I can simply leave my knife at home and STILL have the tools I need otherwise. My dream would be a Midnight Manager @work without the blade.

As someone who generally carries a dedicated knife, the lack of a knife on a Swiss style tool adds welcome room for more tools with no redundancy. Note that in a lot of countries, they will still confiscate anything that looks like a SAK, knife or no.
I agree with Thomas, a bottle opener and a few driver bits (torx, Phillips, flat, hex, etc.) would be great.

Add some Screw Eye Hooks into the sheath of the Cold Steel Bushman and you have an easy way to lock it to a longer handle for camp clearing tasks and eyelets to make a fast bushcraft fishing pole. A reliable utility bug out blade.
Bout time for Victorinox I suggested it to them, like I assume many others have, a bunch of times for years. We all have a main blade in our new favorite steel what we need is a tool set we can EDC everywhere even if our knife is stowed.
All fly in/fly out jobs from mining to journalism/undercover ops need a bladeless tool - what I always suggested is just swap the blade on all 3 layer SAKs with skizzors (now the "main blade" on all the scissor less tools or a file/saw when there are scissors

I’ve been traveling with the SwissCard model with the fingernail file. The fingernail file is actually useful, it has a usable small pair of scissors, a screw bit tool, and even a straight pin. Not macho by any means, but if you’re on a business trip is some hotel room and need some scissors or other tools, its VERY handy. And TSA doesn’t seem to care one wit about it!

Unfortunately, airport security usually confiscates any scissors as well. I remember they even forced my 90 year old grandmother to hand over a tiny set of grooming scissors with a rounded tip and probably 1/2 inch "blades".
The fact that your grandmother had her’s confiscated (and they shouldn’t have been) does not mean they “usually” do so.
I fly with child safety scissors with no issue.
Im prepared for a potential situation on my boat. Recently we fouled our prop on some discarded rope that was floating about. My daughter was agile enough to reach and untangle but if i was on my own, i wouldn't be, since ive got bad injuries.
So if that happens im imagining lashing my serrated knife to an oar or pole and sawing at it. I think it could work. Im not going in the water, knife in teeth, thats for sure!
Btw i got a klein duct knife for use on the boat, as it was pretty cheap and a good size.
I'm actually really happy that victorinox is making some more bladeless tools because there's places I can't carry a knife everyday but I still need the functionality of a pocket sized multitool so having a bladeless victorinox that's bigger than the jet setter and more capable will be amazing!

I'd go a step farther. Take a Compact, swap out the awl for a nail file, and swap out the blade for a removable craft blade. Has a sharp edge for packages and light work, but easily removable for security. Keep the scissors.
That gives you a really solid base to build from with a 3rd layer of your choice. I'd go for the Explorer layer, personally, but I can definitely see other options like the bit kit. All built on a very solid foundation that can be made TSA friendly by tossing the craft blade.
I'd absolutely carry that daily.
A SAK without the blades is something I'm interested in for certain situations and EDC efficiency.
Scissors, awl,can opener,wood saw,pliers,tweezers,pen, pin, bit driver,flat blade prying tool....I know some of this can't fly,but this is my bladeless sak.
On the whole spearhead topic - look at Asian bushcrafting and survival channels. They make arrows and spears from wood/bamboo. Regarding Victorinox - when will we get modular multitools with a selection of tools/blades we can swap as we need them? On the floating knife - can you suggest some floating fixed blades I can take on my boat when fishing? I think I have seen one from Mora somewhere, but assume there are more. On to cutting boards - invest in the more expensive wooden cutting boards with end-grain if you can, then you won't be chipping away at the wood while you are cutting. Cheers!
I have no idea beyond scale and demand why Victorinox doesn't have an online customization offering ... it would likely cost 3x for the consumer (which I'd happily pay) but I think enough people would be interested to make it profitable.

Victorinox doesn't have customization because I know that they don't want the headaches of fulfilling so many potential orders, returns, cancelations, and endless questions about configurations/returns/warranty/materials/etc.
They're going to continue to do the usual:
Come out with the various multitude of configurations and let the customer pick what's needed.
@@TheScotchaholic Victorinox wants to force people to buy another multitool if they need just one or 2 tools more or different tools. It's an opportunity for competitors, but I haven't seen anything yet.
Basically just a compliment to the folding knife I already carry - scissors, awl, cork screw with eyeglass insert, bottle/can opener, magnifying lens, probably a saw since the awl will get it confiscated anyways. The bit driver might be nice, but if it was compact size without i would prefer that.
Softer woods don't dull blades as much, but they can chip them since the edge can bite deeper and get laterally stressed if the blade is torqued. Same goes for high density vs low density plastic boards.
Went to Switzerland and there are so many knives there and they have the lax knife laws except for automatics and dagger shapes.
The victorinox has already done something similar for sales . The evoke was changed to have a removable thumb stud for the sales in Germany
I normally take my Leatherman Style PS, but there have been moments where TSA almost confiscated it. I now don't really want to take it because it's discontinued and such a great knifeless multitool! I have been tempted to get the Jetsetter but I don't fly enough. Would be nice to see more TSA friendly tools with pliers. The Victorinox pliers are good enough for my uses but Leathermans are superior.
I wish Leatherman did a true bladless/sawless tool. But if Swiss does bring this to the USA, I would like to see the Cyber tool 34 with a full size file in place of the main blade, remove the small blade and awl, and that would be the perfect TSA style tool.
Remember that the final determiner of what is or is not compliant, regardless of regulation, is working the only federal job you do not need a high school diploma for.
Many airports and airlines will not permit anything that might be considered a pointy objects including screwdrivers, corkscrew, pliers, box cutters and scissors. Most of the tools on a Swiss Army knife would be excluded. In Europe tiny folding blade pocket knives can be carried but not if they lock. This means technically the letter opener of the Swisscard is a fixed blade knife and illegal to carry without good reason.
Wood or plastic cutting boards are definitely best for kitchen use. Notice that doesn't include Bamboo.
It's not inherently bad for blades outside of being a touch harder than most woods. But they don't feel very good to drag a knife over due to their dense and fibrous properties (more friction, feels like it grips the knife and takes more effort to keep the blade moving). That's kept to a minimum with asian knives and techniques since they're not designed with rolling chops in mind, favoring draw cuts instead.
Jet setter is nearly perfect. Just wish it had file with the flat head

Also, the blade on my SAK is largely redundant because I carry a locking blade knife alongside it.
TSA compliance depends on each TSA agent. If they don’t know your tool they can consider it as not cataloged and confiscate it.
Hey DCA! When storing fixed blade knives, specifically ones that come with leather sheathes, do you recommended they be kept in their sheath or stored bare? I’ve stored them both ways but when stored in sheath, the blades tend to get micro-rust spots. Love the videos! Keep up the excellent work!
I don't use plastic cutting boards since it was pointed out to me that it produces micro plastic particles when cutting into them, which in turn ends up in my food and then in me...
Wood is all I use now... all that's needed is a bit more care in cleaning, especially after preparing meat or fish products... 😊
plus, so many folks have a variety of preferred folding knives, nice to have multitool options without buying another semi-redundant blade, to pair with whatever you prefer for the day.

Question I’m a firefighter and looking for a fixed blade that is light enough to not bother me when I wear it but strong enough to be used roughly and it absolutely has to be highly rust resistant as for my usage it will almost certainly get a large amount of water on it and there are times as a firefighter your at a forest fire for several hours and your so busy you genuinely don’t have time to dry your knife I would prefer something with a chitex sheathe over leather.

Gerber LMF II Infantry, solid piece of steel, has serrations for cutting ropes or seat belts, affordable (replacable), 420HC is somewhat rust resistant and easy to resharpen.
Also Eickhorn has some knives that may be interesting for you. There is even a special Rescue Tool from Eickhorn. If you look more for classical knives, check out the KM2000
Look up diving knives on the internet. That is what my uncle carried when he worked for a fire department for over thirty years. He started out as a diver then was a regular fireman and just decided to carry his diving knife.
On the Cold Steel page; in the fixed blade section; sort by price and check out the first 2 pages for something that appeals to you.
the pricier cutting boards with checkerboard patterns of blocks are best, because the wood grain in those is aligned vertically, pointing up/down rather than sideways, and doesn't dull or burr the knife edge nearly as easily
I already thought about it. My first multitool was a Victorinox climber (due to MacGyver, of course). With time, I figured out that it was a one-hand tool, or, regardless of how many tools I had on it, I could use only one at a time, and in my right hand only. Therefore, I decided to assist it with a pliers multitool, by that year the Leatherman skeletool had just debuted, so I bought it, and immediately discovered it was by far more useful than the Climber, even having less tools. The game changed: today, Leatherman are my primary multitool, Victorinox are the complementary ones.
And yes, would make sense the modular separation of Victorinox. Would be very cool a multitool with 3 sections, one with the blade and the scissors, one dedicated to the pliers, corkscrew and can opener and one dedicated to the other tools (ruler, bottle opener, magnifier glass, etc). Perfectly possible. I have a cheap (and useful) knife-fork-spoon multitool, it is a 3 section toll, it can be disassembled and becomes 3 independent pieces, because when in use, you never use all of them at once.
For travel, I would love to have a basic SAK, with fingernail clippers, nail file, and scissors.

I've been waiting for bladeless SAKs for years now, to the point that I have been considering getting one custom made. Everyday I carry a mid-sized locking pocket knife that is perfectly capable of performing all of my cutting duties. I'd love to also carry a small, pocketable multi-tool that contains all of the little SAK tools.
Hi, DCA. I recently found my old Kershaw Half Ton that I used to carry at work. I went online to see about getting a new one and found that they were discontinued. Can you recommend a short, stout, hard use folder with a drop or spear point under $75?
Both Victorinox Jetsetter and Leatherman Style PS are great for traveling. Style is a little flimsy but it gets the job done and helped me more than enough times to recommend it.
For me, the ideal Victorinox would be geared towards urban trips, city breaks. It'll have scissors and nail file in one row, dedicated can and bottlecap openers in second row (the usuals with flatheads they have on majority of their knives), corkscrew on the back. Alox would be ideal here, to keep it even slimmer.
I went to a concert a month or so ago, and the venue had metal detectors, so I put my working knives in my truck. Forgot I had purchased the Companion keychain SAK and had that on my key lanyard and had that confiscated. Got lucky that I was able to get it back when I was leaving, but I’m 100% getting the Jetsetter to replace it for situations like it in the future

I had a perfectly legal item taken away even with having a printout from their website. Most trips I’m checking a bag so I just throw my knife in there and it’s all good. I might try a bladeless SAK but not an expensive model.
DCA: What are the best pocket fixed blades for utility (not for self defense, unless the blade shape calls for it) and using your best judgement, are best for EDC. I know they are iconic, but I'd really like to see 3 and 4 layers without the can and bottle openers as an option: Scissors, pliers, file, driver/back tools driver for edc- saw instead of driver to make it an outdoor companion to a dedicated blade or two. Also tung oil your opinels, it helps a bit with damp.

Hey DCA- I'm currently unemployed so I find myself wearing joggers/sweatpants more often than not these days.
What are some lightweight folders that can be comfortably carried in that type of 'less structured' pocket? Heavier knives tend to annoyingly pull down and bounce around in baggy pockets.
If you want even more parameters: Sub 4", $100 or less, and as many opening methods as possible because I'll definitely be fidgeting around with it between job applications. Ty!

Victorinox' idea to bring out multi-tools without knife blades is an idea I've been following and suggesting for years.
Not because I'm in any way against knives or knife blades, it's because of wrong redundancy. I found out that tool knives like the SAK mustn't be too thick. Those 5-layers and more are very impractical. It's much better to have two 3layered ones in each trouser pocket with complementary tools than one big one. But until now almost every Swiss Army knife has got the same basic implements, starting with the two knife blades. So it would be great to have, say, the small scissors and pliers and a Phillips and the glasses in one tool and the knife blades, Saw and file on the other one.
I can understand Victorinox making a multi tool w/out the blade or scissors makes sense and a smart move that lets them make and sell tools that that you can carry anywhere, as along as they still offer multi tools with knives. I carry a minimal money clip and CC/ID holder.
I work in a school setting and knifes are frowned upon. I’d start with the bladeless Explorer and add a file and saw.

Ive got an EDC pouch that I carry with me often. In it I’ve got my EDC knife, pry bar, space pen and other bits. The thing is I really want a small multi-tool/pliers without a blade! It will never get used and is just added bulk and weight.
A new law has been on trial in France since April: carrying a knife is no longer an offence, but merely punishable by a fine (500€ = $540). This means that the police and the justice system, which are overburdened with cases to deal with (before, carrying a knife inevitably led to police custody + court), will be able to step up checks and hand out fines on a large scale. So, a blade-less SAK makes sense, as this kind of local initiative (in France for the moment) tends to spread throughout Europe.
I bought the Jetsetter specifically to be able to take it thought TSA. When it goes through the scanner for carry on luggage, the “computer” flags it as a pocket knife, which means my bag gets pulled out for hand inspection. Even though I have had this happen twice, and the hand inspection resulted in permission to carry the device, it caused me quite a delay in getting through security, as a result I no longer carry it.
Why not carry it in your pocket?

Can confirm. Take it out ahead of time, open it up, put in the tray, tell them about it and say it's bladeless. I've not had an issue.
When I travelled with my Jetsetter, I would open it all the way and put it in the bin with my other pocket stuff. When they point it out, I say there is no blade and they can easily verify that and it was never a problem
I carry my Victorinox for the bottle opener. We have an amazing Mexican street taco stand that only sells glass bottles. I use a SOG spear as a "backup plan" in my house.
My ideal bladeless Swiss army would be a jet setter with a finger nail clipper, n maybe a file or driver

It's actually a great idea, and this is me speaking as a Victorinox fanboy. I mostly EDC SAKs but I also own a few nice folders which are legal here in the UK - slipjoints with blades under 3 in long. I have a Spyderco Urban in N690, Manly Wasp in S90V, Bokerplus Atlas (12C27), Byrd Tern (steel not special enough to mention lol), as well as a couple of traditional folders. I rarely carry them as I love the extra utility of a SAK. But the one you show in the thumbnail - basically a Climber with the excellent inline Phillips instead of blades - would be perfect to carry with one of my folders, plus a pair of Knipex Cobras, that would be a perfect urban EDC for me. As it is I just bought a Jetsetter as I'm flying abroad tomorrow and can't go with nothing. I'm impressed by the little Phillips driver on that, tested it on PH2 and PH1 screws and it works a treat. I can pair that up with one of my folders but as that left me without flathead / beater prying capacity, I bought a cheap but sturdy keychain prybar/flathead and voila, that with Jetsetter + folder + Knipex and I have a great urban EDC toolset.

Wow, can you make it through security with 91mm or even 58mm SAK scissors? In Australia they seize any form of scissors including old granny's nail scissors. IDK if it's true but I've also heard of large sized nail clippers being seized because they have a 'blade'.
Quick question about blade shapes. We're all familiar about the origin of the Bowie. What about blades like wharncliff , tanto , etc. Also should they re- classify the reverse tanto as the "Thomas ". Thanks for the great shows.
I carry a Leatherman every day. I use the pliers, scissors, file, and screwdrivers far more than I use the blades, although that's in part because I often have a dedicated pocket knife with better ergos. For a Swiss Army Non-Knife, I agree with a file, scissors, bit driver, and can/bottle openers as very useful. A T-handle corkscrew should probably remain as well.

I don’t mind spending $200-$300, but the cheaper the better. [In truth, I think I just want a Sebenza…] I want to be able to baton wood and use it for steak. 😂 Suggestions?
My air travel SAK would have the nail clip, nail file, scissors, toothpick, tweezers, magnifying glass, maybe an optional extra layer for Phillips, flat screwdriver/pry bar and bottle opener. Maybe wrapped in exclusive color scales so that it is quickly identifiable and a "TSA Approved" logo.
Turn the Pioneer X into a two layer by removing the blade and awl. Replace the can and bottle opener with the nail file/screwdriver combo. Call it the Travel Pioneer or Air Pioneer.
Including pioneer in the name wouldn't make sense as the awl is what makes a pioneer, just like a file makes a cadet. It's like removing the bit driver system from a cybertool but still calling it a cybertool.
@@veikkakarvonen831 good to know. Scratch the name then. The idea is to have something TSA compliant but still useful. I use a Pioneer-X as a daily carry, but have no use for the awl and the two “openers.” The can opener is pathetic and the bottle opener is fairly obsolete. However, the screwdriver ends do come in handy. I like the scales, but miss having the tweezers and toothpick.
It isn't wood. The japanese do those new cutting boards made of softer material by companies like Hasigawa and Asahi. Made specifically for use with those high rockwell, very thin blades for sashimi and sushi. I think the good ones are rubber with a wooden core.
Excellent comment regarding the Victorinox tools. My choice would be a Swiss Champ or Cybertool without the blade, the file could be seen as a weapon by TSA so I would drop even that. Not sure if the saw would be a problem, but I could do without that too. Scissors, Philipps Screwdriver, cap opener (maybe lockable like on the 111mm models - great pry tool)
Im a teacher, so until my state allows me to carry a knife, I'll almost definately be buying what Victorinox puts out.

Had Dublin airport security take a SAK I had ground down to comply with their own sub 60mm rule…because they measured knife blades “to the fulcrum”, same as scissors. Merely trying to ask them to allow me to retrieve the removable eye glass screw driver and tweezers had them threatening to eject me from the airport!
Never flying to the US via Dublin again.

Question: What folding knife would you recommend as a sleek and elegant/ unintimidating EDC with ONLY a bottle opener in addition to the blade. I'm thinking of something like the CRKT Fial (without the wine accessories, obviously). I don't use my pocket knives daily nor heavily so a thin blade would be preferable, the bottle opener would honestly just be an excuse to carry it more often/ have more use for it. Bonus points if it has a button/ crossbar lock. Thanks in advance.
