  • Greetings, everyone! Welcome to The Commander Tavern! I am Demented Kirby and this is the 2nd episode of the 2nd season of one of the series on this channel, The Brewery. This series is all about brewing and deck techs - hopefully showcasing the spiciest of brews!
    This episode of The Brewery is showcasing a deck I've been playing with for a long time, Phenax, God of Deception. This is just your run-of-the-mill (no pun intended) mill deck with Phenax at the helm. It's meant to be more casual and underpowered in that it doesn't run so many tutors or control magic. It just synergistically mills opponents while taking advantage of that. That being said, you could definitely optimize the deck more by adding in a ton more tutors to find Eater of the Dead and a bunch more cantrips and control magic to be as consistent as possible. Fair warning though: running it that way gets old really quickly and can lead to boring games both with it and against it. If you want to see the complete decklist for this deck, you can find it at this link:

    As always, thanks to all you viewers for your interest! Comment down below what your favorite interaction are when playing with Phenax. What are some cards you really like to include that I didn't mention? You can also tweet me @CommanderTavern.

    Nice to see a brew that's more on the casual side of the spectrum.

      Thanks! I know it might seem like my decks are hypercompetitive just because I run dual lands, fetchlands, and all the expensive mana rocks. But the mana base isn't what necessarily makes a deck competitive - it's the level of the cards included. This deck is blue/black and there's hardly any control elements in the deck. The deck is composed almost entirely of milling and strategies that synergize with milling. Very few interactions within the deck procure an instant win but they're included because I do build decks with victory in mind. But this deck is by no means oppressive or competitive. I don't always play in competitive or semi-competitive pods so it's good to have a relax deck to pilot.

      I recently uploaded a deck tech for Sram, Senior Edificer that's also on the casual side of the spectrum. If you're interested in that one as well, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/8xnZOQauAbk/видео.html

    If possible, get Charrix. He is a 4 drop, 0/17. He also has the ability to gain strength incase shit hits the fans

      Oh yeah, Charix is already in my deck. I immediately put it in when I was able to get it. Milling for 17 each time is brutal.

    Phenax is a commander that I've been wanting to build a deck for. And I think that Disciple of Deceit and Horseshoe crab would be good cards in the deck

      crovax 13 Phenax is definitely a fun commander to build around. The deck can even be built around on a budget and still achieve its goals.
      Oof! Horseshoe Crab is definitely an OG self-untapper. Disciple of Deceit would be a great inclusion in the deck. It basically makes all your cards have transmute for free.

    *checks calculator* casual = $1,825.... I'll go play with some rocks.

      Casual isn't a price tag; it's a play style. The only expensive cards in the deck is the mana base (lands and rocks). Apart from that the deck costs less than $500, which is well within the realm of a 100-card commander deck that isn't explicitly built on a strict budget. So the deck can run with budget substitutes of those rocks and lands.

      Agree to disagree on that one. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to casually pick up a gallon of milk in my Lamborghini.

      Lol, if you know how much the deck costs, you would see that almost the entirety of the cost is in the lands, moxes, and Mana Crypt. Replacing those with budget alternatives drastically reduces the cost of the deck. How am I wrong?
      And either way, just because a card is super expensive now, doesn't mean it was that expensive 10-12 years ago. Commander started as an officially recognized format by WotC in 2011. So the format has been around for 9 years, per WotC, even though it's been around as an unofficial format even longer than that (when it was called Elder Dragon Highlander). So even someone going to pick up milk in their Pinto would've been able to afford an Underground Sea 12 years ago. Apparently it's a sin to have been playing this game long enough to have been able to afford these cards 10+ years ago. But sure, agree to disagree.

    Oh wow, I've never thought about the 6 mana Jace for Phenax but it definitely sounds good. Repeatable untap in a deck with a lot of defenders to protect it seems so obvious, yet I still have never seen it on edhrec.

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  4 года назад +1

      That Jace is definitely amazing for untap shenanigans - especially in decks that are a bit powered down. It's also surprising to me that it's not more visible in EDHREC.

    its nice. but the mana curv :((

      Thanks!
      It's a trifle difficult, that's for sure. But that's why the deck has mana rocks out the wazoo. Then again, Phenax is a casual-ish commander which is why you can run a curve that's a bit larger past 3 than for more semi-competitive decks.

    Pls brewery pf oloro :"v

      @TheCommanderTavern  4 года назад +1

      Oloro was my first deck so it's definitely something I could put together in the near future. I did disassemble it for being too oppressive, but I think I could do a deck tech on how I had it. At least it'd be interesting to see how it would've continued evolving had I kept it.
