The reason it's so common is actually due to the way the vikings named there children. All to do with the ending of names to identify each other. Our name goes way back to Scandinavian origin.

Tartan was found in the Sands of Iraq, and with the natural mummies of the Tarim Basin that were part of ancient Sumaria but has been part of China for c200 years now. The CCP don't like that they were not ancient Han, so refused to allow archaeologists to excavate more and and then they planted trees over hundreds, maybe thousands more of mummies so that the roots would destroy the remains. Similar to what the have done to the much older and larger pyramids than in Egypt, which are also on land taken by the Chinese over time, but which were not built by their ancestors - although they are misappropriating and claiming they were. If anyone thinks whites and blacks are raacist, they should try spending time around those of the mentality of commumist Chinese supremacists.
Btw, one of the plaids found in the Tarim Basin is the same as one of my paternal family designs, except it lacks a thin yellow line which may have been there but faded. It was a Thompson tartan.

did tartan come from iraq, or was it traded goods that were buried with them for being "exotic" & cherished? i know the celts had an unpredictable type influence on the ancient near east and were avid traders/travellers in damascus and stuff especially way back.
i'm curious to know more about any speculation on these origins, as i'm half middle eastern half scottish hahahaha, so seeing my worlds collide/combine like this over tartan is of intrigue

Clan MacTavish (MacTamhais - Original Gaelic) has many names that have been anglicised or changed over time that are connected to the name MacTavish such as Thompson, Thomson, Thomas, Thomason, MacCavish, MacCash, Cash and so on, but the best place to start looking is at the following URL's.
    Clan MacTavish - Main Page
    clanmactavish.org/
    Clan MacTavish - History Page
    clanmactavish.org/history
There are also Septs to the clan, such as Stevenson, etc. Good luck on your research.

@mowgdog Thompson with or without the "P" "has" been anglicised, turned into an English sounding name from MacTamhais (original Gaelic), then slightly anglicised to MacTavish so that it is pronounced correctly by English speaking people. The Duke of Argyll claims our name as a sept to Clan Campbell, that is "wrong". I've been to Inveraray Castle and seen their family tree painting. It is 'wrong'. There is enough proof at the official clanmactavish (dot) org web site on this

My father’s great great grandfather came to New York from England in 1853 (we’ve been here ever since) and my mother’s family has been here in New York since long before that. But, when she Googled her full married name, the first three people with her name were black… and her first name is Scandinavian!

Supposedly either my great-great-grandfather or my great-grandfather emigrated to the U.S. from the British Isles (specifically Scotland or Ireland) and so I have spent the past year and a half reading about Scottish/Irish history nearly every time I get online. From a few of the websites I have visited to learn more about clan MacTavish I have learned that the clan has dated back to the ruling of king Arthur though I don't know weather or not to believe that because the clans of Scotland have been around for such a long time that there is not a lot of evidence that I and my family have any relation to clan MacTavish and from what I have read, we have a just as good of a chance to be related to clan McThomas. My great-grandfather died of cancer when I was little and he never really talked much so I never got a chance let alone thought of asking him directly if he knew much about our family origin. all I really know about him is that he was an air force pilot during WWII and that he was a farmer in his later years. My great-great-grandfather died before I was born and I don't see my father all to often but he is just as clueless as to our family origin as I so the only way I can think of to surely know if I and my family are even actually from Irish/Scottish origin (and I'd like to believe we are due to my fairly noticeable accent) is through a DNA test. But I'm not entirely sure if I really want to know because then I would no longer have an excuse to continue studying the history of the Isles and the clans of Scotland.

+Drake Thompson (Skittlez) (See URL's below) I can relate to what you have said about family and not being able to ask questions now that they have gone. They may not have really known either. In what you said, I agree there may be a chance you could be related to Clan MacThomas, but from the research I've done over the years, without any direct proof, it is "my opinion" that Clan MacThomas is related to Clan MacTavish, but having said that, I know that would be challenged, especially Clan MacThomas who most definitely are a clan unto their own. I am not trying to convince you on that. You will need to do you own research to decide for yourself and it is so very much a case of finding pieces to a puzzle, hence why I say it is "my opinion" on this matter. All you can do is draw as many pieces of that puzzle together and see what is the most likely truth, but "always" be flexible to any new information you find as you go.
The following two URL's are a good place to explore many questions you may have on the Thompson name.

@mowgdog G'day mate, yep, I fully understand the confusion and one thing is certain, you'll often find an opposing view. People can accept or reject what I'm trying to say, no problem. I'm 100% convinced of our ancestral name. It's not Anglo Saxon, that would mean it was Germanic in origin.

  • @JimMacTavish
    @JimMacTavish 13 лет назад

Thomas has been said to mean 'twin' as I have seen at some sites, but certainly not Tavish. Tavish is an anglicised name from Tamhais, the original Gaelic spelling. Tavish does mean Thomas, but your reference is from English references, not Scottish or Irish, more to the point, Gaelic. There may well be "English" Thomas's that have history related to their 'first' name to the notion of 'twin', but I don't compare this with the Surname of Thompson etc or preceeding MacTavish name.

Great video. However since you made this there has been some new information come to light re: McTavish and Thom(p)son.  If all 17 (1694 Argyll Hearth Tax Roll) of the MacCombis scattered throughout all of Argyll changed their names to MacTavish, their number would not begin to compare with the numbers of Thomsons living in the lowlands where they had flourished for hundreds of years as Thomsons.
 King James pardoned, by name, 40 fighting men with the Thomson surname riding with John [Maxwell], Earl of Morton for all crimes committed between 1569 and 1585. Common sense tells us that 40 Thomsons of fighting age, from Eskdale, recorded more than 100 years before there even was a name MacTavish cannot be descended nor connected to the wee family in Argyll.
 The McCombis were not included in the 1587 roll of clans because a handful of related individuals does not constitute a clan.
 A chief can only be the head of ONE family surname. The chief of Clan MacTavish is only the legitimate chief of the clan and name MacTavish.
 The Scottish Parliament repeatedly recognized MacThomas and Thomson as two separate and individual names/clans already present in the 1500s. Thomson and MacThomas are both derivitives of 'Thomas.' Lord Lyon has formally recognized three distinct names: Clan MacThomas of Glenshee, Clan MacTavish and Clan Thompson International. In the 21st century, these three names cannot be co-mingled or interchanged. An individual named MacThomas is no more a member of Clan Thompson International than he is a member of Clan MacTavish and so on.
