A truly transcendental recital with Richter at his peak. Surely one of the great Liszt performances of the last Century.
To cite a couple of examples - for me his Vallee d'Obermann has never been surpassed for its profundity of expression and the Tarantella is simply breathtaking.
A 21st Century Richter has yet to be discovered.

What a recital! And it's probably only half of the programme.

Oh, what a near perfect program! I would have loved the other Sonetto del Petrarca (the104), added into the bargain, but I guess one can't have everything...
I heard him in concerts in early late 60s-70s several times, but never Liszt!
    Thanks for uploading this!

There are quite outstanding perdormances in that registering. The Vallée d'Obermann is quite expressive through its various modes of writing, and the sonnetto de Patrarca is delicately crafted (as is "au bord d'une source"). It is intersting to note that Richetr did nit choose the most known and played pieces aof the "Années de Plerinage". For instance, he chose 'aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este' instead of the fous 'Jeaux d'eau'.
The "Pathétique" of Beethoven is also excellent, but here we have more competitors.

Shocked at how briskly he takes Beethoven's Grave tempo sections.

He was completely apolitical, he literally didn't know enough about politics to take an informed stance on any political topic beyond how certain decisions by this or that government official affected his life.

I watched part of Richter, The Enigma recently and I recall the part where it shows him at least slightly annoyed with the reaction to Stalin's death in March 1953 (but unfortunately did not see any footage on Prokofiev's death, who died the same day as Stalin did)

At Stalin's funeral, he played GERMAN composers-- and got booed. Never stupid enough to get himself in trouble.

Peccato che le registrazioni dal vivo di Richter siano sempre rovinate da qualcuno che tossisce.
