That self-oscillation part was simply magic! For some reasons, perhaps partly because of the dynamic of the preamp into the tape echo section, I was hearing some kind of a ducking effect. Like when you were playing your guitar the delay was going away almost completely, but then when you stopped playing the lush and beautiful bed of repeats were gradually appearing and coming to the surface again! Loved it so much indeed. Cheers
To some extent it reminds me of the Fairfield Meet Maude pedal. They sound different enough, but yet there are some shared characteristics between the two and I'm hearing.
Damn Kris, what a sound! This tape delay just seems to add a magic touch to your playing, not mentioning the expression possibilities you demoed! The changing nature and interactivity of the echo seems so lively to me, as if you were communicating with a live entity 😉 It gives me a vibe of a couple of classic movies. And I just have a weak spot for vintage analog technology. Sure it has a couple drawbacks but nothing is for free... Keep on rocking! 🎸
I cant get enough of real tape echo. I like some of the digital emulation pedals, esp Wampler Faux tape echo and Strymon Volatne has special place in my heart. But they do something different, then actual Tape Echo units does. it feels like (hard to describe), once the signal is recorded to tape in is played back, it became its own entity, that is playing alongside one, yet never stepping all over what you do. Also, for some reason taple units sounds good in front of driven amps, where digital emulation turns ugly. Im still waiting for you, to cover TRex Tape delays :D I have the Junior (wish I waited for the Dlux, but what can I do now? Haha). It took me little time to tweak it (there are 3 settings, that are interactive, that needs to be setted first), but now its my "make magic sounds machine".
I'm pretty sure that I'll never buy such a thing. But because of that it is even more interesting to see and hear it in your video Kris! Egyébként pedig Boldog Új Évet! :)
Because a delay or echo is created by recording the guitars signal onto a magnetic tape. That signal is then repeated by the machine using another playback head to replay the signal from the magnetic tape
Jon gave a perfect answer, it’s exactly as he wrote. Check out 13:20 again, I show the tape that it uses to record and repeat your playing to create the delay. It’s a beautiful old-school technology. 🤩
Or the replicator jr from t rex pedals, a modern analog tape delay? Form myself : no, cause I don't like the hustle that comes with old analog tape stuff.
there is not much hassle with the TRex Replicator. Just clean heads from time to time and thats about it. I have same tape for 4 years and its still very good.
@@KrisBarocsi The tones in your video are so good. I don't think that there's a difference for the listener. For me the Replicator melts well with the guitar and is very fun to play. On the board it's not so practical but it's worth...I also have a real spring reverb on my board ;-)
@@KrisBarocsi the Trex seems to add more natural modulation to sound. The actual tape is not that well stabilized, so it warbles bit around the recording and playback head creating natural pitch vibrato and adds bit of sparkly artifatcs. The EM-66 seems to have clearer repeats, but it might only be, because there are no long delay times, like the Replicators are capable of. Also, I have not replaced my tape in 4 years, so it might be worn. Both units add the sparkly front of the note.
Came for the gear, stayed for the playing. If only there was a quiet nice place near me where I can have a drink and enjoy that king of playing.

Yeah totally! That ducking is amazing. It makes this so usable. 😊

Thanks so much! I enjoyed playing this old delay a lot, too bad it was just a loaner. I think I’ll have to get a tape machine one day. 😅 cheers!
@@KrisBarocsi my pleasure, thanks for an interesting topic! Btw I could see it in your face you've really enjoyed it 😁

Ohhh that intro was the most beautiful thing that i heard recently
I’m so glad to hear that Ahmet! Thanks so much!

That was a trippy and cool demo Kris
Thanks buddy, it was pretty trippy playing that thing tbh. 😂
The Volante with a preamp in Front is a great tape solution🤘
Oh man, absolutely!
Reels of magnetic Magistry or digital precision ? I’ll stay in my bucket brigade for a bit.
Dotted 8ths for life!!
You can never go wrong with the bucket brigade on your side. 😆🙌 Cheers buddy!

great playing and sounds but i have a question, why is it a tape delay? what does it do? why do they call it "tape?"

i use a real tape delay from t-rex
Awesome! I really want to spend some time with the Replicator. How would you describe it compared to what you’ve heard in this video?
