    Now this is how you demo cymbals!! :) I hate those dudes on youtube who just demo a ride on the bell or don't even show their dynamics

    • @subsonicwarthog

      I'm not spending $300-$500 on a bell. I think they should focus on the cymbal not the bell, turn the background music off and stay away from massive drum rolls and fills. SHOW ME THE CYMBAL.

    I've been wanting to order a new Sabian ride for years instead of my trusty AA Medium, but I get disheartened when the only videos on RUclips are jazz drummers quietly demoing them in a style that doesn't reflect my own. So not only did I narrow it down to the Groove and Legacy Heavy rides, but you made a VIDEO COMPARING THEM and in a REALISTIC, MODERN WAY! So on behalf of all rock drummers, thank you.

      Troy Wright I have an Omni as well and find myself ignoring all my other cymbals because I love seeing what sounds I can get out of the Omni. Had a jam the other week that was all over the place in terms of genre and the Omni sounded right whether it was a punk blast or some crazy stoner funk. I love that symbal.

    Legacy Heavy ride all the way man! Pitch is higher so it cuts through better, although I might actually prefer the Groove ride for more modern jazz stuff. Groove is also the best when crashed, but that's not really the priority with rides imho. Omni is meh.

    Another vote for the legacy ride. Its got the best stick definition and bell and its crashability is definitely heavier than a normal crash cymbal. Which I think is what you want, if your crash riding on your ride cymbal, you wanna feel heaviness of it in the sound, which the legacy ride gives

    The heavy is my fave. Its crash is a little brighter which is something I like because it stands out, something you want on a busy piece, but the groove is nice for a slower paced piece where you want it to meld with the rest. Great selection, thanks for sharing!

Absolutely nothing wrong with jazz BUT damn everybody demo's cymbals playing jazz! Troy hit these bad bad boys with meaning and plays like he means it.

    I'd go with the legacy any day of the week.
    - the bell reminds me so much of my favourite bell sound, the Zildjian k dark medium 22's bell
    - mighty crash sound
    -definite, chocolaty bow sound with a pleasant wash that has a distinct note.
    If you need a musical ride to treat with heavy hands, that's what I recommend.
    Groove ride is fine too, but too mellow for my taste.
    Try to avoid the omni when recording.

  • @erikfraunfelter3628

    I almost think the Groove Ride is just a less shimmery version of the Legacy Heavy Ride. I ended up choosing a Groove Ride over the Legacy Heavy Ride in my personal setup for this reason, but I seriously think I could have been happy with the Legacy. I like the groove ride because it's cleaner sounding and the bell is unlathed, which for me makes really separates its sound from the bow and makes it stand out sonically. Love my Groove Ride. I also tried (and still own) the AA Raw Bell Dry Ride and a HHX Fierce Ride, but none of them had the stick definition/ping, attack, strong bell, and the crashabilty of the Groove Ride for me. To me, good definition on the ping from the bow of a ride is the key element in choosing a ride.

    Been using the omni for 2days. It has a really cool sound and can get a little trashy as you move to the outside of the cymbal. It is a quiet ride cymbal though. I do need that volume and I don't want to start cracking ride cymbals, So I will trade up for the artisan 22".
    Great video comparing these rides. It helped a lot!!

    Because of you I bought a Sabian HHX 22" Legacy Heavy at the PASIC show in 2017. It was the model they had on display and it was about 30% off what it usually is. I use that at school with my AA 21" Bash ride, both work well for every style from jazz to metal. I also have the 21" AAX Raw Bell Dry Ride which is similar to the groove ride and in my opinion, it is the perfect rock ride sound. I hope to have a studio like yours someday where I can make high quality recordings of all 3 and then make all sorts of records with those 3 rides!!

    I was never a fan of the Omni ride. It's too trashy and the decay is too quick, and I like to crash my rides often while also having some stick definition so I prefer my 21" Groove ride. I might end up using my Groove as a crash and get the 22" Legacy as well.

    Dude I absolutely love this! I currently have a your Omni but in 24 inch I love the raw bell sound & raw ride as well as the lathed ride pings & dings I get out of them but the crash is a little too washy for me. Currently looking into maybe down sizing to the 21 or 22 of the hhx complex medium or thin ride. It’s a tough choice. This video I just came a crossed and I love how you really crash them! Most people don’t crash them as much & I hate that. Mostly because I truly love a multi sound ride nice cutting bell and ride dings with a wide and open crashabilty/sound is the best thing to me when playing. You have a killer style too man! Thanks for posting

      I’m a Sabian player and they have some amazing rides but I have to admit Zildjian do have the best rides. That Sweet K ride they have?! It’s like the groove ride levelled up with better bell and stick definition. Personally I play a 22 HH Power Bell ride.

    @JeffRandallDrumming 9 лет назад +1

    I just came here to watch you play drums dude. BUT, each of those rides are great in their own way. I can see using that Omni ride on a jazz gig or something a little more toned down since its a pretty dry ride. The the Legacy Groove would be perfect for a more "vintage" sound and the Legacy Heavy would be sick for anything that's really got to cut, like a heavier style of music. Or you could just say fuck it and use all of them at the same time. You only live once.

  • @Hotshot2414
    @Hotshot2414 9 лет назад

    Definitely think the Legacy is the brightest of the Rides. The articulate and crash is superb. The groove comes in second, but I personally prefer the bell it has over the Legacy. The OMNI sounds awesome none the less, although I personally feel it's crossed over into an FX cymbal given its got a sorta sustained splashy sound it produces (from my ears).
    Love the video! Keep it up Troy! :)

    That sounds perfect! Those three. That's my set up. Beautiful as crashes. Maybe the lighter legacy though.

    Thanks for making this video. Since I play more of a rock style with distorted guitars, none of these cymbals have enough stick definition or strong bell characteristics to cut through the mix. The qualities you ascribed to them are only true if played in lighter, softer genres. I liked the video though - the cymbals do sound nice. Cheers.

    I have the legacy heavy and it's fucking nice and the perfect balance between being dry and crashable

    The groove ride and the heavy ride are my favorites out of the three.

    The Groove Ride and Legacy Ride both sound fantastic, I really can't get to grips with the Omni cymbals though, to me they sound like a cheap, cracked cymbal which doesn't crash or ride very well.

      that joker is so unique man.. the crash of it is perfect so that it don't sound too much like an actual crash ..
