76 was the year I graduated from high school and I watched this event live at a sports bar. Bruce Jenner inspired me to give up drugs and train like the way I did before a bike accident two years prior. I never had any Olympic delusions but manged to do a 4:12 mile, bench press 245, and swim 100m under water, 34 minute 10K. Not bad for someone who wiegh 152lbs. Thanks for sharing this Bruce Jenner will always be one of my heros... Sincerly Wildman

Crossing that finish line had to be the best feeling. Bruce Jenner had that looked like he was even more focus and determined. Jenner had that same look when he cross the 400 meter mark all the way on to the to 1500 finish. When people say fatigue make cowards out of us, it is so true. He feared nothing that day. We all have looked at old pictures or film of ourselves from the past with the thought that the person we see seem like someone else, introspectively speaking, we actually do change a bit with life experience we gather throughout our days on this earth to form the person we are at the time each of us call current. I honestly do think most people do change for the better; more importantly, Life can be a beautiful thing when you focus on the positive.

I have purposely stayed away from any news about Jenner since this. I say "purposely", I mean since he started his career on TV. The video above is what I remember of the fella and that's about what I know. I was 6 years old and he kicked major ass. Let him change into a spotted owl, who gives a shit? How many Olympic Gold Medals have you earned?

I sure remember those races. My family had rented a home from the Crownovers. Burt your Aunt Carla was my sister Faith's close friend in high school and my sister was at your parents wedding. I remember my sister flying down for the wedding and landing at the San Francisco airport and she was thinking the plane was going to land in the water the way that runway looks. That always gave me a chuckle when I'd fly into SFO. I know she recently talked with Carla. I remember all those years of prep for Bruce and the Olympics and cheering for his every win. It was also fun for me knowing Chrystie and I both became Interior Designers for a career.

Your Father is a great American athlete and athletic hero!
You know the history... Russia was considered a threat to the world.
1976, The United States 200 year anniversary.
1976 Olympics was one of the most Olympian historical events in history.
I would love to hear your Father's minute by minute account and mind set.
I know he wins and my heart begins to race as I watch this competition (as it did when I watched on television Summer 1976) and your Father's run and victory. My heart is still pounding. Your Father made America proud!
So glad I came across your video.

My family and I drove to the 1976 Montreal Olympics from Iowa. I had recently installed a CB radio in our family car (a 1974 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme) and I remember how it was very evident how the CB radio traffic (channel 19) ceased after we crossed the border into Canada, at Niagara Falls. I also remember being concerned about our used car being able to make it so far and back home. I was a worry-wart of a kid back then. So I had gotten some motor oil, an oil filter, a cardboard box lined with a plastic bag and filled with kitty litter, and some tools before we left and put it all in the trunk of our car. At some point in Canada we stopped at a park and ate sandwiches my mom had prepared and put in a cooler. After eating I slid under the car and changed our oil. My parents had purchased tickets through Montgomery Wards, as I recall. We had tickets for the track & field events. We were there on this day. I was 14 at the time and had my driving permit and I remember driving from just outside of Detroit all the way back home in Iowa in one day. I wanted to drive because I was terrified whenever my mom would drive. She would always tailgate some semi. The highway speed limit was 70 or 75 mph back then, but it was very common for people to drive 90 mph on the interstate highways back then. It's pretty terrifying having your mom probably 10 ft behind some semi going 90 mph! Even as a young child it terrified me and I would cry and say I wanted my daddy to drive. I probably have PTSD today because of it.

Bruce could have settled for a slower finish and still make a world record. Just like Ted Williams could have settled for making .400 without taking his last at bat. But that is not what champions do.
Bruce risked the possibility of a leg cramp or pull. He wanted to finish as a champion does, striving to win.
Ted did likewise, and got a hit at his final at bat that season, and finished at .406.
Truly an admirable performance. Nothing can ever take that away.
