Part of the reason The Fool was so beaten up when Todd got it has to do with the fact that Clapton once left it sitting outside on a hill all night. The Beatles even wrote a song about it.

When Todd was doing a gig in Niagara Falls he made a personal appearance at Maple Leaf Village.
I shook his hand, a very friendly social scene. I think of him as innovating a more conversational rock style,
    if not operatic.

Let me explain the power of myth.
Gibson built a run of ES335 guitars based on Clapton's own ES335.
They claimed this was the guitar used to record the live version of Crossroads from Wheels Of Fire, so they billed it as the "Crossroads" guitar. They also claimed he purchased the guitar when he was with the Yardbirds.
    All fabrications.
The actual guitar Clapton used on that recording was the Fool SG. The ES335 was purchased late in 1968 and only used once during Cream's farewell concert. Clapton subsequently used it in Blind Faith and sporadically after that.

The guitar used on “Sunshine of Your Love” was actually a ‘58 black Les Paul Custom, Not the SG. Clapton gave the Custom to Albert Lee and told him that he used it on that song. Clapton bought the Les Paul from Manny’s in NYC during the recording of “Disraeli Gears”.

I took a summer job working at the Hollywood Palladium down across Sunset Blvd
The Aquarius theater where Dick Clark ABC in concert tapings filmed they would start the rehearsals Thursday and then tape over the weekends and the crew at the Palladium had a deal with the crew at the Aquarius theater we let each other in the back way to check out whatever music was going on no big deal
l went to one taping And Todd rundgren and Utopia were there and actually didn't watch much of the set heard more of it was in the back talking whatnot later past by Todd and Dick Clark talking to each other it's dark you can still see but I noticed he had a beat up guitar case with him and I asked him if I could check out his guitar and he said yeah no problem and it was The Fool I could barely make open chords then I was just starting to play guitar and I remember making a D chord and then trying to play a lead like Mick Ralphs😱
NOW I think about that and all the history and it just kicks my ass! 🤣
