Maybe a lot of realities are actually safe now.
They shifted to a reality where there aren't duplicates of themselves, yet they stepped into nearly identical lives like nothing happened. This means that this new reality's variants of the protagonists either died in the facility, OR managed to jump to a new reality of their own.
Its possible thousands of versions suceeded in closing their own version of the portal and then "side swapped" with the next dimension over.
It IS possible he's hosed, but equally possible he's not.

Chernobyl happened 16 days after my 5th birthday, I remember watching it on the news with my grandparents (RIP). I remember then and still to this day being creeped tf out by anything to do with Chernobyl. This also makes you wonder with all we're starting to find out (publicly) about dark matter, dark energy, Mandela effect, string theory and multi-verse theory; if projects like CERN are necessarily a good idea. Just because we CAN do something doesn't mean we SHOULD do it. Science forgets this far too often. Yes I know this is a "bs scary story", however that does not detract from the point I was making. Science is great, but we as a species are always curious, we need to learn temperance for our curiosity so we can take baby steps instead of trying to pole vaulting over things we have little or no understanding of. Baby steps to ensure we don't endanger the entire world and every man, woman, child, plant and animal on it.

I disagree with that but I love your courage to say it . To me it's bad and getting worse . Look into the Russian thermonuclear generators once used to power remote light houses the world over but mainly around Russian shipping lanes, 1200 still lost and spewing radiation everywhere . The Ukraine war has ended all clean up efforts by Russia. Not to mention the numerous nuclear powered subs ships and carriers that have sank .now think about rampant cancers on everybody on our pets dogs especially .

this story drives me NUTS because it totally glosses over the mention of equivalent exchange and the implication that the 2 main characters replaced their alternate selves in the other reality, which means their alternates must have wound up in the facility

    • @Heartrose7

Remember they reconfigured the facility from an equivalent exchange teleportation to a one-way trip machine. Meaning that those two are most like doppelgangers for that world's duo now. Provided that version's duo survived their trip or never took it the first place.

Nice rewrite of the Dean Koontz novel "Fear Nothing". That is not a criticism it is a tribute I love this kind of cosmic horror and in the spirit of HPLovecraft who liked having his work inspire others to use it and add their own versions; this story is a welcome and well done version of this kind of horror fiction. Too often now horror is becoming subsumed by "crime thrillers" or "psychological thrillers" calling themselves horror where a guy goes crazy and murders people, scary *yawn*. Or worse, torture porn *snore*. Keep this type of stuff coming and anyone reading this if they liked this story they probably would like the two novels about Moonlight Bay; they are his early work and better than his later stuff.

That’s what I love most about Lovecraft. His work in its own way is non-fiction. Sure the monsters aren’t really real per say but the fear they infect you with and then you share that fear around and it spreads even more fear, it’s almost like he never needed the monster to begin with, he could make monsters of us. And while a lot of his universe is expanded upon by many other author I respect them all because they made one of the best horror genres to date. It’s one that inspires great fear in us but also inspires us to ask the really big and deep questions about ourselves.

It is interesting that some people who are clued up say the explanation for the disaster only made complete sense if something using a massive amount of power had suddenly gone off line while this test was happening
On its own something going off line while using such power isn't rare in the nuclear world doing so with out notice using this power magnitude was extremely rare
