I've done paint and body for the last 13 years and I have done this very thing multiple times to engine blocks and heads and it works great! A tip I have used to help out is after you have sanded it and it's all shiny but not straight yet, I got one of those fat tip magic markers and any color works really other then silver, and you color in the entire top part that you are sanding on and wherever there is a low spot or scratch whatever the marker stays in it visibly showing up that you need to sand more there until it's gone. It's used in body work just with different materials, called a guide coat!! Works out very well and being able to see it helps out big-time if u have never done anything like this and you are nervous at all!! Just wanted to share this with everyone!! Sorry for the novel I wrote here :/
I was lucky enough to acquire a 10X10 half inch sheet of tempered glass that I epoxied to a 3/8 sheet of steel. Works unbelievably well and I got the idea from OLDSKOOL! My thumbnail picture is the finished product of my Son's 03 Civic that blew the timing belt and we resurfaced the block and head with this technique back in August 2016. Still runs great today!
I did my Girls 2002 Tacoma 2.4L with a sand paper holder for sanding walls that has a Handle, you get the same full sheet and split it in half, the cylinder was not warp I sanded for 3 hours and look Amazing and flat, and timing belt thanks to you and you encouragement, 3 days running with no check engine light, so far so good and with the money i saved i changed all the sensor, especially the hard to get to. Thanks!! for you Awesome Videos
Preach!!!! Simple, plain, AUTHENTIC, word of God preaching. You are touched by His hand. I feel His word and His love delivered by your words. God is working through you to reach all of us. Not all will hear but those of us who do will be better for your efforts in the Lord’s name. God be praised and so may you be blessed, my friend.
Thank you for your videos brother! I used your old school techniques to clean up a set of warped heads and cylinders on my Harley. It worked very well and the bike is running as good as new. Saving money is great, but the pride you can take in doing the job yourself is even better. God bless!
Tip: Mark your low spots with some type of paint prior to sanding. One you start sand, the paint will start being removed once the surface gets closer to being true. Then at that point start checking for warpage.
You getting another jewel in your crown with every video you. Matthew 7:20 says you'll know them by their fruits. You keep putting Jesus first in every video. Im also loving car tips and flipped my first 2 cars this year. God Bless ya Brother
I just fixed the heater/fan blower in my 92 subaru liberty. My gf was nagging me to buy a new car, coz summer is coming up and need that AC. Handled it, and 5 minutes later you posted this video. Word up
I am so inspired by you sir, I just finished this video at work and even my boss and head mechanic(who are Chaldean by the way) couldn't do anything but look and smile at a man of great faith, teaching and inspiring us young mechanics and people of all walks of life to persevere and SMASH ON IT IN JESUS' NAME.Many blessings to you and yours, as well as to those who need it.
I’m definitely doing this on my head gasket job. Did it once in the past but only resurfaced the head at the shop. A couple months later it failed. This time I’m doing both. Thanks for the video, this is an excellent idea
Imagine it's your first day in the workshop as a trainee and this man is your instructor. You just can't loose with this sort of knowledge and attitude. Thanks for a great video.
I love your videos. I first started watching you when I bought a 2004 Buick Lesabre for my son. I was having so many challenges with that car. After watching your videos...i felt so confident that things could get done. I also admire that you are a MAN OF GOD n give the WORD!! Keep on uplifting and encouraging. Thanks
Thank you brother for the demonstration on resurfacing an engine block. I love your attitude and I like the way you remind us all why we were given a chance at life and who we need to be thankful to. Wish I had you as a neighbor.
You're a life saver. Bout to do the same to a Subaru boxer engine. The machine shop wanted to charge $1200 for both heads and both halves of the block. I'll let you know how it goes!
Very nice. I use a flat piece of steel from a squared, level welding table. It's about 20" wide by 12" deep by 2" thick. Gotta be 40 lbs. With 80 grit you can do about 10 passes. I usually will go 2 strokes one way, 2 another. I learned it from your head video actually and just apply the same concepts. Keep it up man. Good work.
Dam you give me motivation to be a better man!! Life has been tough lately and has really tested my faith and questioned my sanity. I'm a mechanic by trade and your vids give me motivation to smash on my side jobs and projects. Mahalo bro from the 808
I saw the first video on how to do that . I did it on my 93 Honda Civic saved me a ton of money the shop wanted 600bucks to do it thanks man really appreciate all the knowledge
Wow! Its good to know guys like you are out there spreading the word my brother and keeping it real! BTW, I'm a female who just used your video to redo my block on a 1.6L ecoboost at home. Thanks for doing what you do! Saved me a ton of money and gave me something to be proud of and teach my sons! May God continue to bless you in every way!
Ephesians 6:12 we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this age against spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenly places. And the word wrestle in the Greek means to the death. people got to understand this warfare ,the devil wants to kill you. it’s like you said brother you got a handle your business and learned that the devils under your feet ,but that only applies to the sons and daughters of the most high God. God bless you and your family. I came across this video I was glad it’s good to see another brother fighting the good fight of faith, by the way where are you from
Great video brother, I found you because I was looking for ways to work on my block but your video speaks volumes to me because I'm starting another journey that you know only to well. when I get a chance ill be looking at your other videos. no complaining, no whining lets just get it done
Amen !! Man ive been watching your videos for a while now and truly God is using you to send his message!!! Everything your taking about had fallen perfectly in line with my life. From measuring the straights of a cylinder head and ruler to the scriptures you quote. I'm all in brotha. Id like to help support. I'm in Jax fl, not sure where u are but keep it brother bc your helping change lives with your videos
Good to see you back Funk, a lots happen since you last posted a video. I started my new mobile mechanics business and a lot of my influence has been from you. My very first you tube video was influenced by you. Good to see you back, keep smashing.
Thank you so much for the good word and the lesson. Did this on my 22re and soon on a d16. Watching this with my son and daughter. Teaching them good work and God's work. God bless
This is such a money saver. Awesome job. I'm trying to do this while my block is still intact. I was thinking I could turn the the crank until the pistons are all in a position away from the top of the cylinders. Stuff paper towels down like you did and give this a shot without having to pull the whole engine out.
You, my man, are a blessing to the lost souls in this world with your testimonies for Jesus Christ. I know the war that goes on between satan and the Holy Spirit within us. I fight it daily, just like you do. We are so blessed that Jesus has forgiven us for all the crud we've done in the past and we will not get what we deserve in the hereafter. I look forward to the day I can shake his hand, fall on my knees, and thank him personally for what he's done for me. Keep on truckin'.
Ive been working on cars for 23 years. While i do really like your videos. I look at what my time is worth? It looked like it took hours to get that block straight. I could of just spent the 40 to 50 bucks to have it decked. In those hours i could of been working on another job making more money. If your in a financial bind i can understand the "old skool" method. Keep it up my friend
Straight ? maybe... ; was that wood flat? who knows... you need a machinist's straight edge, not that POS ruler; this is all kid stuff; good idea, but not good enough; with the steel gaskets of today you really need to know your stuff and have the right tools...
@@josepeixoto3384 ok buddy. This man's making moves. It's not rocket science, it's a simple engine. I mean, it has pretty loose tolerances, you don't need a million dollar CNC machine to flatten something within a couple thousandths of an inch. I guarantee you haven't even attempted anything like this so how can you say it's child's play??? Keep hatin bud.
@@cobradwight1 dint know it was that cheap for a shop to resurface a head...I just always assume they wud charge aot...........I like stayin away frm shops as much as possible...
I started watching you years ago I still have one of the videos when you resurfacing an engine head it might have been a Honda You're the reason I'm surfacing my own engine heads so I thank you wish I could send you a picture of them 🙏🏽
Welcome back Oldskool!!!! A lot of people look to you for moral support and guidance. Maybe consider a short video once every two weeks, not necessarily a repair, just spiritual support...
@@mrfixit-sm6cf Sorry about not replying, I am JUST seeing your comment now!! I did not get a notification, and just stopped by to check out the new comments, then I saw your replay. I REALLY appreciated that, THANKS!!!! 👍👍
Listen guys, this dude knows his shit and I can respect a man of God and a man who can DIY a whole redecking but for those who don't know how to work on cars just take it to the local machine shop and support small business. Redecking a cylinder head is absolutely, one thousand percent no joke and requires SERIOUS experience. Not just redecking it but disassembling a cylinder head from a block is time consuming if you don't have the correct tools and/or time and storage. DIY when you can but if you truly are broke, why risk blowing yet another head because you wanted pinch pennies. Shoutout to my man right here for giving his time and knowledge but WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS if you have never worked on a car
Welcome back! I loved watching your videos, started watching them when I wanted to first become a mechanic, all glory to God, Ive been a mechanic for 4 years, so far so good. You really inspired me with your videos. Good to have you back
i hope you dont mind me pointing out a flaw as we are always learning and improving there is one flaw in this method though and many of your strokes you're doing the center twice for every one time the edge is hit because its difficult to get the edge hit the same amount as the center. you would essentially need to go completlyoff the edge from one end to the other if you want to avoid sanding the middle more then the edges,a good method for avoiding this problem is using a block thats longer and wider then the engine block and stroke in circles, this gives the edges the same amount of sanding as the center. i have no doubt your method works but its somthing to consider.
@@oldskoolfunk71 This is what I'm struggling with right now. I got the dip in the middle and the edges are high. been sanding it a LOT and im nervous I over-sanded incorrectly. I can't afford to mess this one up.. just got fired and my ex employer refuses to pay my 33 hours of overtime. the bills don't stop coming. got kids. Gotta do it right the first time if I'm going to succeed... there's so little information out there about doing it old-skool.
One thing I'd like to add. Some engines require you to have the front timing cover bolted to the engine while being machined so you don't end up with a lip which can cause premature gasket failures. Other than that, this is just old school tricks that still work to this day. Cheers Funk!
I missed you Old School. I'm so glad to see and hear from you again. I missed your teaching about cars and about the Lord. I hope you and your family are doing well. God bless.
Good to see you back. Praying for you - a person who sticks their neck out as you do draws attention, eh? Draws fire. So I'm praying for you. Love the videos - my son and I have been working to rehab an old Ford Ranger, and your stuff has been a big help.
Greating brother. My name is Jeremiah and as a mechanic myself, I thought I was oldschool, but you are A King of what you do & I respect that a lot bro. About you salvation and warfare issue, think I need a warrior with a deep seated fire like you to stand with. If you wouldn't mind, please lets hook up for some battle strategy. Peace be with you brother. I love you sir. Semper fi.
Nothing wrong with your explanations. I drove my ex nuts with the explanation of how you ground valves with a vacuum hose. Dammit, I had a 300 L6 Ford ground down to where it would take each port over 8 hours to drain a load of diesel. Only then did I put the head back on the block.
I came here browsing engine building and get preached at.. Instant fan buddy, keep up the good work! Planting a seed of the Word in the mind of people who may otherwise never listen to a preacher or read the bible. Every little bit of light helps!
Man, I love your work!! Both mechanically and spiritual. You speak so much truth about both subjects! Racism is another vile facet of Satan’s arsenal. It’s time for us all to WAKE UP and see the truth, we are being played off against each other, and fools fall for it every time. Stay blessed, Dave.
I used to DIY for myself for decades as a angry drug addict who would curse & smash things as I worked through problems such as auto mechanic or home repair which always left me very distressed & dependant on drugs to get through. I don't need that junk anymore but rely on Jesus Christ as my drug now because A Holy Ghost high gives me peace & Joy in the midst of life's challenges & trials but never leaves me lonely or disappointed. Trust in JESUS CHRIST. I always pray for guidance before working on anything now & He Always helps guide me through without getting angry but thankful & Humbled by God's Love.
Watching this cy2020 im amvery inspired by your video and dicided to sand my block just now not yet finish but the result is awesome, its hard to find long sandpaper here in philiphines so i buy cheap one. Great video big help for us those cannot afford machine shop love your work simply the best
what works a lot better is get a piece of scrap granite, put it on a flat table, i use my table saw. glue the sandpaper on the granite, glue enough pieces of sandpaper down so its a big enough that the block will never fall off the sandpaper while sanding. flip the block upside down on the sand paper and move the block back and forth. let the weight of the block push down for you, no need to put force on the block or head. of course this wont work in the block is in the car. I really like your vids and the message you give to people, wish we had more like you. thx
I think you'd be better off taking a longer sanding block so it extends beyond both sides of the block so your constantly in contact on both ends. That way your for sure taking the high spots down first. Love your videos man.
Love you brother, keep smashin that devil in Jesus Christ.good to see you back bro, many rise up against me they say there’s no helping to God with our Lord and our shield for me the glory the lifter of my head
I like this guy. He has the right idea. If you have the right tools, and methods, you can do things by hand, just as well, OR BETTER, than you can with many machines. It just takes time. Don't rush the job. Anyone know about scraping ways on a lathe or mill? The best scraping is done by hand. The right tools here are an accurate straight edge, and a good set of feeler gages. The rest is proper technique, and to check your work carefully and often.
I remember when he first made a video using this method and people were roasting him in the comments but this is how they did it 100 years ago, without machines. They still do this in third world countries
My only concern is taking too much off and than having issues with timing stuff. I would pr try a higher grit and just keep working in until it gets rid of the low spots. You can always take more off but once you have taken too much there is no going back. Just my 2 cents. But great video my friend and I love how you always put God first and he gives you that confidence
This works ..I decked a head and block like this...motor running awesome 6 months later...it blower 2 head gaskets...come to find out the radiator was stopped up about 80%
Oldskool, try using a bigger sanding block or just make sure that with every pass of the block in any direction, sandpaper is contacting 100% of the surface at all times. Faster results with no spot sanding. God bless u sir.. Keep smashen.
This came in handy. Was debating about sanding my deck down myself, with the block still in the car. By using your technique of paper towels an blocking all the ports/passages, it should work. It was either this, or taking a chance on a slightly warped deck (.0025 between cyl 2&3) mated to a resurfaced head, an using some copper spray on my HG. Acceptable OE warpage limit is under .004
Peace, brother... Good to see you still active on youtube... I'm grateful for what you provide... Many blessings... I dig how you broke it down at the end... |[ Truth ]|

Psalm 83:18 (KJV)18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth.
I just want to share with you something that is so important , and that is Gods Name,
Gods name in hebrew is י ה ו ה / YHWH] and when it is translated in English it is Jehovah [Transliterated Yahweh]
Gods name is used over 6900 times however has been removed in most bibles due to the tradition of the Israelites not wanting to violate the commandment in Exodus 20:7 which says "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain;
2 interesting things to note here about this scripture. . .
1]most translations Render Jehovah's name as capital LORD to distinguish it as Gods name as opposed to [lowercase] lord which is used as a title for example when Sarah called Abraham my lord [gen 18:12], none the less : lord whether spelled "lord" or "LORD" is still a title like Mr, Dr, or SIR, senora etc
So this really should read "Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain;"
2] that scripture says to not use Gods name in vain:. . . if we look up the definition of vain it says :producing no result; useless./having no real value
Well ironically by removing gods name over 6000 times from the bible in effect the modern world has made Gods name usesless/vain,
This is especially true with you consider scriptures like :
pr 18:10 The name of "the LORD" is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
WHICH SHOULD BE RENDERED
pr 18:10 The name of JEHOVAH is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
OR
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of "the LORD" shall be delivered:
With out using gods name in the above scripture it is the equivalent of saying "whomever calls on the name of the doctor will be delivered. the problem is: which doctor are you referring to, there our thousands of named doctors or in this case false gods out there but only one divine God [Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth.]
Notice the difference
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of JEHOVAH shall be delivered:
God always used his name to distinguish him from all the false gods and to distinguish him as the God of his people. For example Exodus 3:15 [ASV]
And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

The first 2 minute of this video is powerful rebuke that satanic bullshit. The Almighty God is the only way. Great respect for you my friend.
I stumbled upon your video brother when searching solutions for my car it's amazing man keep preaching Jesus
Mahalo bro from the 808
808
I saw the first video on how to do that . I did it on my 93 Honda Civic saved me a ton of money the shop wanted 600bucks to do it thanks man really appreciate all the knowledge
Wow! Its good to know guys like you are out there spreading the word my brother and keeping it real! BTW, I'm a female who just used your video to redo my block on a 1.6L ecoboost at home. Thanks for doing what you do! Saved me a ton of money and gave me something to be proud of and teach my sons! May God continue to bless you in every way!
Keep the faith brother ... ur doing Gods work on a evil platform...Good to see people bold in the faith
Yes a new video glad to see your doing well. God bless you and your family. keep the video's coming.
God bless
hey brother, I use greased rope when i resurface blocks like that it holds the metal filings really well. Thank you for sharing.
That's a great idea. I was thinking something like a plumbers putty might work well to
You are right!!! Love you preaching the word of God everything else is like icing on the cake my friend
This man has helped me make thousands of dollars. God bless him.
God bless you my brother for educating people that don't know. kids just see cool brand designs. love you brother.
Love your approach, mechanical work with a message from the word of God.
Keep hatin bud.
wer do I take the block and head to get surface for 50
cal638 any competent machine shop.
@@cobradwight1 dint know it was that cheap for a shop to resurface a head...I just always assume they wud charge aot...........I like stayin away frm shops as much as possible...
Keep making them videos!!! Nice to see someone providing alternatives for people who don’t have the money to just take their car to a shop to fix.
Maybe consider a short video once every two weeks, not necessarily a repair, just spiritual support...
astral love the channel man ty for all ur vids
@@mrfixit-sm6cf Sorry about not replying, I am JUST seeing your comment now!! I did not get a notification, and just stopped by to check out the new comments, then I saw your replay. I REALLY appreciated that, THANKS!!!! 👍👍
Yeaa buddy
I have 2 H series blocks just sitting there.Watching your videos makes me want to do all that work my self.Thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for you informative automotive videos; but more importantly, thank you for your witness for Jesus Christ.
Good to have you back
i hope you dont mind me pointing out a flaw as we are always learning and improving
there is one flaw in this method though and many of your strokes you're doing the center twice for every one time the edge is hit because its difficult to get the edge hit the same amount as the center. you would essentially need to go completlyoff the edge from one end to the other if you want to avoid sanding the middle more then the edges,a good method for avoiding this problem is using a block thats longer and wider then the engine block and stroke in circles, this gives the edges the same amount of sanding as the center.
i have no doubt your method works but its somthing to consider.
I hear you. I made a bigger sanding block to counter that. Thank you for the input Boosted.
@@oldskoolfunk71 This is what I'm struggling with right now. I got the dip in the middle and the edges are high. been sanding it a LOT and im nervous I over-sanded incorrectly. I can't afford to mess this one up.. just got fired and my ex employer refuses to pay my 33 hours of overtime. the bills don't stop coming. got kids. Gotta do it right the first time if I'm going to succeed... there's so little information out there about doing it old-skool.
thank you for this. this comment is gold for me. i was searching high and low for this.
I did that on a 93 Corolla 1.8L from a video you did years ago-you saved me big bucks...thanks a million.
Them corollas can go man sold a 93 in 2008 we'll kept car it's a legacy ride there
One thing I'd like to add.
God bless.
oldskool funk, we need more instructional videos and mechanic stuff. You are great!!
I opened my bible to read the verses and it flopped right to the page without having to search. gave me chills
Glad you are back, great video. "Adapt and overcome " I learned it in the Marines
Very nice video. It awesome to see Christian that's not afraid to talk about the spiritual side of our faith.
Hi just wanted to say its good to see you back an well. Thanks for all your help to everyone
Welcome back brother. Jesus is the Lord.
Love your opening message. Family will always be family. If its money, chatter or evilness, be the bigger one and just let it go.
Me and my Fiance are happy to see you back OSK! God Bless you and your family in Jesus Christ Mighty name and Power! Baby is soo cute!
Bottom line you are an inspiration God blessed you you have helped my life.
Good to see you back. Praying for you - a person who sticks their neck out as you do draws attention, eh? Draws fire. So I'm praying for you. Love the videos - my son and I have been working to rehab an old Ford Ranger, and your stuff has been a big help.
Welcome back Oldschool, great to hear the Word and get inspired with your work...
Gracias!
I am glad to see you back.
Thanks for the demonstration and the inspiration.
HEY LEN, yeah it is cool to see him back!!!!
Oh Yeah it is!
Semper fi.
Talofa from hawaii, god bless your family. You do honest work, keep it up.
God Bless you brother! I'm about to do my cylinder head resurface today. My block is fine, but I might do it anyway 🙏🏿
This right here, Is what America is all about.
Man, I love your work!!
Both mechanically and spiritual.
You speak so much truth about both subjects!
Racism is another vile facet of Satan’s arsenal. It’s time for us all to WAKE UP and see the truth, we are being played off against each other, and fools fall for it every time.
Stay blessed,
Dave.
Good job getting rid of the evil!! No whining, AMEN!! Excellent resurfacing advice as well. Lots of good topic to get the job done well, and cheap!
I really like your vids and the message you give to people, wish we had more like you. thx
Keep up the videos. I am really blown away with your skill and find joy in your videos.
Thank you for all the teachings you have given me, they have taught me a lot, thanks my brother and God bless you.
Hay man it's nice to see you back your one of my favorite mechanic thank you for sharing your thoughts
Car guy and a man of the kingdom? Count me in! Earned my subscription
A child of the lord, keep motivating man
Old school it's been a while. Glad to see you. Feb 7, 2019 I'll be graduating Tulsa Welding school.
AMEN BROTHER KEEP IT COMING !!!! MAY GOD BLESS YOU SO YOU CAN KEEP SPREADING THE GOOD WORD!!
I remember when he first made a video using this method and people were roasting him in the comments but this is how they did it 100 years ago, without machines. They still do this in third world countries
Good to see you back, Brother....love your videos and EVERYONE needs a little 'Old Skool Funk'...
People that didn’t catch the end..,..go watch the END! Racism is horrible!! Hate is HORRIBLE!! Stay blessed my friend
This works ..I decked a head and block like this...motor running awesome 6 months later...it blower 2 head gaskets...come to find out the radiator was stopped up about 80%
Watching your video, you make auto repair simple, wish I was your next-door neighbor
Acceptable OE warpage limit is under .004
True motivation for diy'ers, thanks man I appreciate your tips and tricks and to save money, great informational video.
Peace, brother... Good to see you still active on youtube... I'm grateful for what you provide... Many blessings...
I dig how you broke it down at the end... |[ Truth ]|
You are a wise man, brother.
God bless you more and your Family. Thank you I learned a lot from your videos. Your an instrument from God.
BIG LOVE
Good to see you back on. Definitely one of my favorite youtubers. You give great advice and life lessons. Keep up the good work
You’re awesome man! Been missing your videos! God bless! Need Jesus in these crazy times for sure! Satan is on the move...time to stand strong!
