    I'd shot Nikon for almost 60 years (starting with a Nikon F in 1961) when I switched from a D810 to an X-t20 about five months ago. Actually, I didn't know I was going to switch when I bought the camera, like you thinking I would just use it for serious hiking. I'm just gotten too old to lug heavy stuff very far. I soon fell in love with the Fujis, and decided to switch all my bodies and lenses, like for like. I use the Fujis almost everyday, and I've never been sorry. It's really reignited my love of photography. Your video has captured and explained the reasons why better and clearer than anyone else. Thank you!

      Hi David, thanks for your comment and I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, my experience sounds very similar to yours, I never had any intention to switch but realised once I had the Fujis that the D800 was just gathering dust. Your comment about reigniting your love for photography is one that resonates with me....I wrote something similar in the original blog I made about switching 2 years ago. I rediscovered my passion for taking pictures with the X Series and I think we can easily forget how important that is.

      It is the feeling of using a camera, not a device.
      There are three manufacturers who generate this feeling, Leica, Olympus and Fuji.
      Canon and nikon shapes and sizes are based to 90's style and idea of "future". It is like looking many movies from that era that you just see that style in stories and effects.

I've been watching countless hours of videos and reading equally as many articles trying to decide if I should swap my Canon 5D mark III for the Fuji XT3 and I think you sold me. So, you must first know what you need before you know what you want. For me, I always struggled to settle on a system, trying to keep up with the current latest and greatest gear, and not figuring out what I really need. I visited my local camera store today and saw how compact the Fujinon 10-24mm zoom is. This really verified what you said in your two videos on this topic about gear size and weight. It is really exciting to finally feel like I am going down the right path. THANK YOU AGAIN!

    My work was shown on a huge 3 x 4 meter billboard on the boardwalk of the Cannes Film Festival back in 2008 shot with a 12 megapixel camera. I had double page spreads from 8 megapixel cameras. In fact one of my images were printed on the Paris Metro that was 2 x 3 meters and being the output was around 32 dpi, it didn't really matter, as the viewing distance had to be at least 2 meters from the image. I presently use the Nikon 800/800e/810 series, but have been discussing the possibilities with Fuji. The one thing I would miss, being a fashion photographer is the 5:4 crop option as most mags I work for come very close to that crop form. But I really do love the colour rendition coming out of the Fuji X series bodies.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  7 лет назад +4

      Hi Benjamin, thanks for the comment. Have you thought about (deep breath) the GFX? It has the 5:4 crop option and is probably a great camera for fashion. I used one and found it a wonderful camera, just very heavy for my kind of work and not suited to handheld shooting.

    • @BenjaminKanarek
      @BenjaminKanarek 7 лет назад +7

      Yes, I have discussed the possibilities with Fuji and they have given me VIP access for pricing, as i am sure you have as well. We did discuss sponsoring as well. I like you, would like to go in the opposite direction size wise. I am also hooked on my 300mm f/2.8 and my 180 and 135DC lenses that I use quite a bit. I can't get that kind of compression with the Fuji MF lenses. I use a monopod when shooting outdoors and handhold in studio: www.benjaminkanarek.com

      I'm still using a Nikon cropped sensor camera and have been wanting to up grade to full frame for a while, but I'm very intrigued by the Fuji system. I don't need 36, 45 or 50 megapixels, but for portrait work I do think that the Bokeh is still a lot creamier on the full frame. I've seen The Fuji 56mm f1.2 and 90f2 vs the Nikkor 58f1.4G and 85f1.4G and the Nikon glass seems to win in my opinion. But Fuji seems to be killing it right now especially with their film simulations and in camera adjustments... I wish I could afford both systems.

    • @richardlopez46
      @richardlopez46 7 лет назад +1

      I checked his web site, and yes, beautiful imagery apparently created using Nikon full frame glass.

      @Johnnycbtx 7 лет назад

      Personally I think the Fuji glass is better than some of the Nikon glass. My 16-55 and 10-24 are far better than my Nikon 17-55 and 12-24.

    As a teenager I had a simple Olympus OM10 (I think that's what it was). I forgot about photography for almost 30 years and when I decided to get myself a half decent camera the Fuji X system was just perfect. It had all the dials, took better images than I could ever dream of and didn't look like a big lump of plastic. Thanks for your thoughtful and honest videos and for sharing your images which are, of course, very impressive.

    Fantastic, well presented video Andy 👍🏻 I recently went from a D810 to an X-T2, and even though I still miss the Nikon, especially paired with my 20mm f/1.8, there's just something about the Fuji that makes shooting enjoyable. The D810 was a great 'tool', but the X-T2 is a great camera 👌🏻

    Andy I love your simplicity and down to earth explanations and humble opinions. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep it that way please. I'm running two 5D mark ii with various lenses and have often been thinking of changing to mirrorless. Many here in Denmark are on to the Olympus. But after having my Fujifilm x100s which I use a lot for stree photography, I felt in love with it. It is the camera I love most. Would like to change to mirrorless one day and I believe Fuji would be the one for me.

      Hi Mike, thanks for the comment, I'm glad you like the videos. You should give the X-T2 or X Pro 2 a try...if you like the X100s you'll love the interchangeable cameras. The X Pro 2 is a beautiful camera, but for me the EVF doesn't work as well as the X-T2, it doesn't have an articulating screen (which I use a lot) and it doesn't balance as well with zoom lenses. Still, it feels similar to use to the X100.

    • @MikeSantis
      @MikeSantis 7 лет назад +1

      I think I will go for the X-T2. And yes. I love my X100s. It is the camera I can associate my self taking the best photos with. The one I'm glad going out and hold in my hand and shoot. It makes me feel so good and so creative. That's why I loved your video here cause you are really opening my eyes to go that way as well.

    Fantastic video with great samples to back up your every point. You are perhaps the only one who managed to pit Fuji sensor capability versus that of Nikon FX. And yes, after watching so many videos out there to help me decide which system to go for, I am now 100% convinced to go the Fujifilm way and I'm well convinced in a big way for the practical reasons you have covered so brilliantly (without having to hype it up unlike a lot out there). I'd like to quickly point out that in the photo comparison, your Fuji DOF is larger than the Nikon DOF due to the crop factor; since you're testing on a three-dimensional scene, it may be that the Fuji is simply more in focus in some areas, thus making the Nikon appear "blurred".
    Great video though, I'm deliberating between FF and a Fuji right now and many of your points are very convincing.

    • @RyanZulqudsie
      @RyanZulqudsie 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for pointing this out. I thought the same thing tho. T was a very informative video, but would be more convincing if he adjust down to the aperture.

    • @keithdunnivan8099
      @keithdunnivan8099 5 лет назад +1

      The DOF does not change. The crop factor causes the image to be cropped but F8 is F8 regardless of the camera it is on.

    • @keithdunnivan8099
      @keithdunnivan8099 5 лет назад +1

      @Phil Jones65 yes you're correct. With full frame you are able to be closer which compresses the back ground. I was just stating that the actual DOF doesn't change.

    • @keithdunnivan8099
      @keithdunnivan8099 5 лет назад

      @Phil Jones65 I'm not sure if you're trying to teach me about DOF or just elaborating what we know? Dof is indicated by the aperture size. Nothing else factors into. The composition will be different on a crop, but 200mm at f8 is the same DOF. That's all I was saying.

    • @keithdunnivan8099
      @keithdunnivan8099 5 лет назад

      @Phil Jones65 200 mm lens at 2.8 on a crop will give exact same DOF as FF. I don't understand how you're so informative but can't understand that.

    Thanks so much for putting this together. I'm in the exact boat you were- a Nikon shooter switching to the Fuji system. At first I was a bit concerned about leaving full frame for a crop sensor, but as you mentioned in the difference is negligible, and in some aspects the Fuji seems superior.

    Just traded in all my Nikon gear and now fully invested in Fuji.I already have the X-T20 and the X-T2 and tomorrow will pick up my X-T3. The D500 was the casualty but I have made the right move. Anyone who has used Fuji X knows why and I don't need to explain.
    Fuji have a great range from beginner to Pro so everyone in catered for. I just wish more would take the time to look at Fuji closer.

    • @carlcooper6177
      @carlcooper6177 6 лет назад +2

      It looks like your expectations far exceed the cameras capabilities. The X-T100 is aimed at entry level users. Try the X-T20 or above you would like those. Fuji are amazing and don't let your one bad experience taint your view. You won't find many companies who offer firmware updates for free that add new features to your camera. If your not convinced then best of luck cos you won't find better.

      Gil Meshulam I am not a Fuji fan boy but left my long term relationship with my Nikon cameras for the lighter and mirrorless benefits of the Fuji system. The xt2 snd xh1 are a lot of fun to use and I have had no issues. I was concerned about the loss of dynamic range moving from ff but it has been negligible for my purposes. I am an occasional pixel peeper but I don’t make huge prints.

    A brilliant piece & a very sensible bit of reasoning for your changing Andy. As a life long dedicated Nikon FM2n film camera user, I could never see a digital equivalent, until I saw the X-Pro2. Immediately I was hooked. I had everything now in digital, in pretty much exactly the same way that my film cameras worked. I literally carry my X-Pro2 everywhere with only one 35mm f2 lens. Over the moon with the system & I like the discipline of only owning one lens. Subscribed to your channel too by the way.

    I agree with your assessment. I recently switched from Nikon to Sony APS-C. So much easier to take with me.
    However, the Sony system is not a joy to use. So far, I spend more trying to remember settings than concentrating on the image.
    The one place I disagree with you is the view finder. I miss the OVF, which I found inspiring. On the Sony a6400, I find that the EVF is very different from the actual scene or the final image. The pixilating in low light, the constant exposure changes - all distracting. I only use it for composing. Anyway, thanks for the video.

      I just bought sony a7c and i had no issues at all to understand the system and menu. There is a way to save 3 all around settings associated to the 1,2,3 selector, you can assemble your own menu by bringing the features you want. Then You have the shortcut with the fn buttons that you can customize with anything you want for photos and videos independently, and you can assign some functions to few buttons and dial. You can select the movie selector for the main movies setting and you have the movie button to always start the video. You can even use one of the 1,2,3 selector for either movies or photos. For me i found that very powerful and simple.

    Fellow nikon to fuji back to nikon convert here. i just couldn't get used to the small body and feel of mirroless cameras (i had the XT2) and what really bugged me was the poor dynamic range of the XT2, it just couldn't bring up shadows up as much as my nikon d500. Additionally, whenever i brought my raws into lightroom they appeared a stop or two darker, unimpressive ISO performance when compared with Nikon d500. so im waiting for my D850.

    Hello Andy, I'm in similar situation that you have gone though, after 50+ yrs in the business my main forte was Portraiture/Weddings and about 30 yrs in Commercial. Back in 63 when I opened my first studio I had a Rolle and like yourself used 4x5 8x10 then 35mm digital and I ended up finishing my film days with Hasselblad. Now I have to pay the price for carrying such equipment' that I ended up having back surgery, to get to my point I very much enjoyed your review with Fujifilm, I'm in the process using X-pro2 & X-E 1 I have just a few lenses and so far I'm like them very much, but your review has made it much easer in making my decision... Lot's of respect for people who made a living shooting weddings. I did it for 5 years or so and I don't think many photographers realise how much hard work it is.
      It's as you say, your equipment has paid for itself many times over so I wouldn't worry about the return on investment. I live in a city centre apartment and space is at a premium, so I tend to not keep hold of stuff and sell whatever I no longer use. It's quite liberating when you get rid of equipment though, just keeping what you need.

    I'll give you one single reason why Fuji is above all else for me:

    Hello Andy,
    Let me just start by saying that you are a truly gifted photographer. It was just recently that I discovered your channel and videos totally by accident. But man you are very talented and have some amazing work!
    Like you I’m into landscape photography and I’m often a bit jealous when I “meet” people such as yourself who are actually landscape photographers by profession. My day job is often keeping me away from my photography. I can only imagine how it must be to be able to go out and about as much as you can.
    Anyway, I watched your video about your switch from Nikon to Fuji. I’m a bit in a struggle with myself on that same topic. I own a D850 and I still have my D800. I love my Nikons; amazing image quality, amazing ergonomics and amazing dynamic range. I just love the way my D850 handles and I’m able to operate it with my eyes closed. Apart from my tripod, I’m not to bothered about the weight of my gear. But I sometimes do which the bag could be more compact. I usually carry three lenses: a 20mm f1.8, a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f4. By the way, the 24-70 is the lens I use the most in my photography. I still have a few filters in the bag although I find myself using them less and less (apart from the polarizer of course). This is certainly an area where I could easily downsize a little bit. But still, all of that gear asks for a somewhat larger backpack with almost no room for food for a day trip. That’s an issue.
    So, many years ago I bought an X-T1. But I never got along with that camera. The buttons where to small and to close to each other. The image quality was very good but I kept on struggling with the smaller body and buttons. In the end I sold the X-T1. Just recently I picked up an X-T30 to have a camera I can easily take with me anywhere. Image quality of the X-T30 is amazing! But again I’m struggling with the tiny size of the camera. It doesn’t feel good in my hands. I’m awaiting a grip / L-bracket from the postman to see if that improves the handling. Although the joystick is a big improvement, the buttons are still very small and that makes it harder to operate the camera “naturally”. This is an area where I simply prefer my D850.
    I’m curious to hear how you go about that. How do you perceive the ergonomics of the Fuji’s coming from bigger DSLR’s?
    And apologies for my lengthy post :-)

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  5 лет назад

      Hi Hibon, thanks for the comment...and i don't mind that it was lengthy. I honestly think it's a really personal thing and different for everyone. When I switched to the X-T1 I found the ergonomics extremely pleasant...I like the dials and didn't the controls too small at all. And the camera that I owned and used longest and turned professional with was the Nikon D3 (I had it before my D800E), so I was comfortable with really big cameras. I totally understand where you're coming from because I meet many people on workshops who much prefer the size of a D850/ 5DV and for me at the end of the day the best photography comes from the camera you're most comfortable using. When I pick up a D800 now it just feels so big and heavy that I can't imagine carrying it around or using it seriously again (and as I said, I used to hike with a D3) as I've just gotten so used to the X series cameras now. I do find the X-T30 a little small to use when I'm wearing gloves though.
      Have you thought of looking at something like the X-H1? It has a bigger body but you still get the smaller Fuji lenses to reduce the size of your kit.

    Fujifilm is so smart that the decisions they've made so far are brilliant... They focused on the outer look, design without neglecting the core stuff like the sensor technology even when their auto focus system wasn't on par with the competition. Yet the most brilliant decision they made was their philosophy of lens lineup which in my opinion compensated for not having a full frame production. The combination of the xtrans sensor and the excellent lens series resulted in the quality of photos Fujifilm is known for today. Not to mention the build quality of their products and the legacy simulations offered in JPEGs. I'm a Sony shooter and I highly respect Sony for its innovations but I also admire and respect Fujifilm...

    Good review. Factual and accurate. I've switched from Canon full frame to first an x-pro1 and now an x-pro2 and xt-2 with a wide array of prime lenses and the 18-55 zoom for convenience. One big advantages of the 18-55 over the 16-55 is the optical image stabilizer on the first. Esp. when doing street photography. The latter has slightly better IQ though (but only by very little). About the foliage: if you have the chance to change to another photo catalogue and raw processor platform, my best experience for Fuji x-trans is with On1 Photo Raw or Capture One. The first is highly recommended esp. at that price. They offer excellent service. If you feel you need to stick with Lightroom, use Iridient as your raw processor. Not only for foliage, but for everything (skintones as well). It outperforms LR in every aspect except of course library management. But, try the amazing fujifilm jpegs sooc as well. Most of the times I only crop the images a bit before finishing. Acros, Astia and Classic Chrome film emulation is just great.
    The keys aspects of the Fuji X platform for me are the excellent image quality, the durability, size/weight, the classic layout of the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture and iso all at one glance) and the evf and hybrid viewfinder on the x-pro1/2. But most of all, Fuji seems to care about its customers. Firmware updates that not only correct bugs, but lift the camera to new levels. That way you don't feel left out after 1 year. All stuff that has refueled my love for photography. Will never go back...

      Thanks for the comment Herco. Interesting to hear your opinion on the 18-55 vs 16-55. It's not a range I use very much, so I was never tempted by the 16-55. I have the 18-55, but have literally never taken it out of the box and keep thinking I should just sell it. I should give it a try for street photography one day though.

    • @jacobh5817

      Andy Mumford, the 18-55 is best suited for my xt-1/2 with fulltime evf. On the x-pro2 I prefer to use the ovf and the f2-range fujicrons as bigheadtaco called them. Either way, the 18-55 is amazingly good for what most people consider to be a kit lens.

      Factual and accurate? He labels parts of the image that are out of focus in the Nikon image (a.k.a bokeh), but are in focus on the Fuji as "resolving less detail with the Nikon". I agree on the part about ergonomics and weight, but that part about image sharpness is just rubbish really.

      I was using Minolta and later (due more lens options) Nikon F3, FM2 and various fixed focal lengths (35/2.0 mm being my favourite). For many years I did not had a "real" camera. Buying an S7 smartphone got back my joy in photography. Incredible what a smartphone camera can deliver today. I love that I have it always with me and can shoot in various conditions. The camera is surprisingly fast and also allows almost macro / close-up shots. I use sometimes the RAW mode of the S7 with great success also.
      I still love to use the S7 for photos, but of course in some ways you're limited with a smartphone camera. So I wanted a "real" camera again -- giving me better quality which sometimes was lacking for landscape photography. And of course also allowing to use longer focal lengths. So I just bought a used X-T1 and the 18-55 lens and really enjoy that very much. I think I'll add an extension ring to allow me to get sometimes a bit closer for some detail shots. In addition I'll very likely buy the 14 mm Fujinon lens. With that setup I think I'm also "done". Pretty lightweight, with very high image quality and lots of options. I might buy an X-T2 or X-T3 used, when the prices are going down. But the X-T1 camera is mostly not the limiting factor to get good photos. Just a tad faster autofocus would be a plus in few situations. But I like the X-T1 a lot and might just continue to use it and possibly not "upgrade" :-)

    Hi Andy, your videos are really inspiring to me. After selling all my Nikon full-frame stuff a few weeks ago and buying a Fuji X-T2 I have seen that you took the same step. Until now, I did not regret that. It was hard at the beginning, especially to see how much of value the gear has lost over the years. But in the end, I bought the Fuji X-T2 kit incl Power booster, 2 additional batteries and still got money back :) The reason why I switched is mainly downsizing of the gear weight. I only used my Nikon only on my travels (Iceland, Lofoten) or for portrait shoots. But it was too heavy for everyday life.
    For the future, I don't want to do the same mistake as in my Nikon life, and owning too many lenses (zoom 14-24/2.8, 70-200/2.8, and a Tamron super tele; plus 5 primes). As I will still do landscape and people photography (and to a smaller extent wildlife photography) I probably need a wideangle lens. I don't really use these super wide angles, but using a prime lens like the 23mm (35mm full frame equivalent) is maybe fun to use, but in some situations not wide enough. What do you think? Your are using the 10-24. Are you satisfied with it? I don't really know, why Fuji was putting an OIS into this lens as this lens is mainly used on a tripod. On the other hand a water-resistance is missing. Did you miss it until now? I am heading to Ireland in a few weeks, and there could be some rain during my trip ;) Will the lens survive? ;)
    The second lens you are using is the 55-200 zoom. Can you recommend this lens? Due to the crop factor this lens is maybe useful for wildlife photography as well. And of course for landscapes.
    Do you photograph people as well? Any lens recommendation?
    Greetings from Germany
    Jochen

      Hi Jochen, thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video.
      I like the 10-24mm a lot. It's not specifically waterproof, but I've used it for 3 years and got it wet many times in the rain, next to waterfalls, in the snow and it's had a couple of waves over it. It's still working fine. I'm sure a little Irish rain won't be a problem.
      I use the 55-200 a lot as a landscape lens and it's excellent. However I don't know if the focus is fast enough for wildlife...I've never tried it.
      For people I use the 35mm f1.4, which is a fantastic lens. The 56mm is also great for portraits.

    Being a crop sensor the Fuji has a greater depth of field and I noticed you compared the two camera's at the same aperture, this may contribute to the out of focus areas with the Nikon camera. However, the greater depth of field is a big advantage to the Fuji :)

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  7 лет назад +3

      Hi Adrian. You're probably right, although the street lamp (which was the part the looked out of focus) is at least 2 meters away from the camera so I was surprised there was an issue at that focal length (16mm)

    • @jamesmason3456
      @jamesmason3456 7 лет назад +1

      Conversely the FF sensor will have shallower DoF and better bokeh than a crop sensor..depends on what you want.

      Andy Mumford I'm actually not surprised there was a problem with the lamp, if it was only a bit further away than 2m. Looking at the images at 100% close up like this, in order to calculate depth of field, I think the circle of confusion needs to be set to the sensor's pixel pitch, which in the case of the Nikon down ressed = T1 pixel pitch x 1.6 = 0.00476mm x 1.6 = 0.0076mm. Entering this plus the focal length (16mm), the aperture (F8) and the subject distance (I guessed 200m - how did you focus?) into a DoF calculator, the near limit is about 4m, which may well make the lamp a bit blurry when pixel peeping. If on the other hand the hyperfocal distance was used, the near limit is then about 2.1m. Now, I know you're actually looking at 200%, which makes the situation even worse. ;)
      For the Fuji focussed at 200m, the near limit is a fair bit closer - 2.6m, or 1.3m for hyperfocal.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  7 лет назад

      Hi Greg. The street lamp was almost certainly out of focus, but the elements that I compared on the other side of the street (the cables, window basket, door number) were comfortably within the Nikon's DOF. Likewise with the telephoto shots, the street signs were around 3 meters infront of the focus point, and even with the Fuji's longer DOF were still comfortably within the Nikon's depth of field

The Sony A7III costs the same with the Tamron 28-75mm and it's FF and has IBIS which is very important to my style (I shoot cosplays). The X-T3 looks beautiful though, one of the best looking cameras I've seen so far.

    The X-T2 seems to be the perfect camera for your style of photography. I've just made the opposite switch, from an X-T2 back to a Canon 5D3. I do a lot of indoor work, particularly live bands. I found the low-light performance to be slightly lacking compared to full-frame, which surprised me as the lab tests and reviews seemed to put them on par. I am a bit of a pixel-peeper, but I'm much happier with the noise (or lack thereof) on the Canon at mid-range ISOs.

      Hi Garry, thanks for the comment. I totally understand where you're coming from. For what I use them for, the Fujis are great,but I mentioned that I used to shoot weddings. I think if I were still doing that professionally I'd have serious doubts about the (lack of) flash system on the Fuji. The Nikon flash system was awesome and Fuji don't have anything that comes close to the SB900. So yeah, horses for courses.

    I was hesitant upon watching this as a lot of vids with ‘switching’ in the title tend to slag off the old system. Love your honest viewpoint! I have previously shot Nikon and actually enjoyed the feeling of the weight in my hand. However, it stopped a lot of images being taken due to the ‘look at me with my massive professional camera’ haha - we all know a tog who like this but for me, I moved to Fuji to become more discreet. Rather than people commenting on what a big camera / lens you have, i enjoy comments of what a cool looking retro camera it is - that’s if people notice it on my travels because you blend in more anyway... I shoot a lot of video these days with an XT3 and it was the first ever apsc camera globally to be able to record 4k60 10 bit internal which is incredible. Eterna film emulation is amazing too.

      Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. To me it seems ridiculous to criticise a camera system that I was happy with for so many years...I just found that I prefer Fuji for the weight and for the experience of using, but that has no bearing on the quality if Nikon cameras.
      As for the "big" camera, i can totally understand that. I shot with a D3 in Morocco and it was impossible to be discrete, and with a D800 in Myanmar and I found the size of it really called attention to itself and felt really large between me and my subject when I was photographing people. I took the Fuji to Indonesia and found it a lot more discrete and easy to photograph people with. It's also nice to be on location and not have a big professional looking camera that people want to come and talk about

    great video - awesome pics you have taken - I agree with all you said - I have mostly switched, but still have my D750's - as they are lighter - but I find for some shots like for weddings the Fuji 50-140mm F2.8 just does not produce pleasant enough Bokeh - ok for landscape etc - likewise the Fuji 16-55mm F2.8 has no IS - so for weddings find it more practical to use a D750 with a Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 with IS -
    I enjoy the Fuji X system - and have both XT1's and XT2's - and not many complains - but lenses are important - and I do have some complains there - the aperture ring on some is way to soft like on the 23mm and 35mm F1.4 - likewise focus speed is very slow on some like the 35mm F1.4 and noise - however most all their primes have super nice optical quality -
    So yes for most use I use the Fuji's - but of course now with the D850 there still might need to own a Nikon D850 ( with Touch LCD and Flip LCD ) and few lenses :) but for most of the time XT2's -
    Look forward to the upcoming update to XT2 - with IBIS - as none of their primes has IS - and hopefully full Touch LCD -

      Jon Hermannsson Thanks for the comment Jon. I agree with you about some of the older Fuji primes focusing. I have the 35mm f1.4 and the 18mm f2 and while I love the optical quality, they do tend to hunt noisily for focus.
      I'm curious about IBIS and it looks like that's something that we'll see in the next gen of Fuji cameras...the Olympus implementation is superb. But I don't shoot much handheld in low light so it's not a game changer for me. I can certainly understand how it would matter for shooting weddings though

    Hello Andy, I recently made the switch to the XT 2 and am so very happy :) I have a question - when processing your photos do you ever use the Fuji presets as a starting point - for example Velvia?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  7 лет назад +9

      Hi Neil, I love the Fuji film simulations and always shoot with both JPEG and RAW. For street and some stock work then I just use the JPEG, but for most of my landscapes I use the RAW and start processing it from the Standard/Provia setting as it gives the flattest file with the most scope for processing. Adding the Velcia preset tends to block up the shadows and push the saturation further than I'd like, and I prefer to control that myself in the editing process.

    Update in 12/18: I revisited this due to considering an upgrade from my EOS-M6. The competitors are Sony a7ii and the XT2. Both are on sale, new for just over $1k. Since the Sony is full-frame this video is relevant. Your comparo sealed it for me: XT2. I'm not a pro, but a former pro and picky amateur. I'm very old school and so enjoy the f-control on the lens and other controls atop the camera. Your results sold me that the camera will be better than I, which is the hierarchy I want.

    Excellent video. Was a Pentax APSC shooter for years. I switched for different reasons:
    A variety of body styles: I currently shoot with an X-Pro2 and X-S10. If I want to go even smaller, I can always opt for an X-E model.
    Better lens support from the manufacturer: It seems Fuji has been releasing many new lenses recently.
    Video capabilities: I'm not a video guy per se but I'm simply blown away by the X-S10's video features.
    Autofocus: I love having 300-plus AF points not merely 27 like on my old K-3.
    Lens adaptability: I like that I can use my old K-mount lenses with MF and Canon EF with AF. I believe they now make a Nikon F-mount AF lens adapter.
    Love the dials: I love being able to control ISO/Shutter/Aperture/Exposure Comp on my X-Pro2. The X-S10 is still a little weird for me, though.
    Body support: It seems like they release 1 to 2 new bodies every year. Though I don't have G. A. S., I like that Fuji is always improving their bodies (as well as their lenses).

    I made a similar switch just over a year ago. I had the D800E and some clunky, heavy lenses, and found I had stopped going out to shoot as much as I used to and it was down to the weight. Big bag, big lenses, pretty big camera and a big tripod. I read up a lot on mirrorless systems and remembered how fondly I felt about my first decent bridge camera, which was a Fuji. I ended up with the XT-1, 55-200, 27mm 2.8 and later the 35mm 1.4 and an xpro1 as a second body [the 35 1.4 is still my go to 99% of the time] - I had sold off my D800E to buy this gear, and I have never once regretted it. I don't miss the huge RAW file sizes, I don't miss the weight, and I don't find the difference in end result image quality lacking in any way. Your direct comparison is very much in line with my experience using the XT-1 after the D800E. I have even held back on buying the XT-2 because I find the XT-1 is such a great value gem in it's own right. You can pick used ones up now for about £450, mint. I would suggest anyone with spare funds who is on the fence, take the chance. You can always sell it on if it's not for you. But I bet you'll keep it ;)

    After 15 years of shooting I'm only just now coming to the realisation that megapixels don't matter, at least not to me. Before I owned my own home I very rarely printed as I wasn't allowed to put anything on the wall. I did the occasional photo book, but the prints were quite small. Since printing more I realise there is no difference between my D750 FX and my D500 DX, at all! Before this I'd only compared them at 100% on screen, where you can see the difference. As my output is either small to the web or print at various sizes less than 50cm, I can now happily make the switch I've always been hesitant to make. Thanks for the video.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  4 года назад +1

      I think a lot of people arrive at that point sooner or later. I know I did. I think we reached a point a few years ago, around the 24mp mark, where more megapixels and bigger senses didn't really make a difference to the vast majority of people's needs. I stress "needs" here, and not "wants" because the 2 things are different. I can understand people wanting more MP because they enjoy zooming in and seeing the detail or whatever, but that's never been important in my photography and once I reached a point where I could sell print snd image licenses without really noticing which camera the image came from, then I realised that I didn't need a high MP full frame camera. I occasionally borrow a GFX 50R to use on certain projects, and it's a lovely camera and I appreciate the images from it, but a few months down the line I find that when I'm going through my LR catalogue for images to present to clients or whatever, I make no distinction between the 50mp medium format images and the 24mp APS-C images that I shot on the same location.

    I am fortunate enough to have a job on the side in a camera store with a very generous policy when it comes letting the staff borrow gear. Basically I have access to most brands and camera models and have used pretty much all of them, and my take on the whole "which is the best camera" is sort of the same one that you are taking here. The general image quality of todays cameras is good enough for you to make your decision based on other features and properties. You've obviously made the right decision for your type of photography and I wish more people would take this approach. It's very interesting to observe people as they come to the store to buy a camera and what they factor in to their purchase. Very often people have a budget and then try to find the camera with the most "maxed specs" that fits within it, and leave little consideration for the user experience. There are so many different styles of cameras today, and you can get very different photography experiences based on what you choose.
    I think an important point to make as well is that you need to take the time to really learn to use the tool that a specific camera is. It's very difficult to fairly judge a camera if you've never really tried it before, but have years of experience using another one. It takes time to get the most out of a camera.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  7 лет назад +1

      Fredrik Svensson Thanks for the comment Fredrik, it's interesting to hear your experience. People really do seem to get too hung up on specs, and from a couple of comments that have appeared here I'm left to wonder about how many people see good photography as a purely technical process where you have the "best" specs shot at the settings designed to get the best out of those specs. It's like there's little time given to the pure pleasure of taking photos, or using those settings to manipulate light creatively. Sorry, I'm ranting a bit here, but I genuinely appreciated your comment. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

      Thank you, glad you got something out of it.
      I think you made an excellent video here and really got your point across. The X-T2 is one of the cameras that I don't have much experience with and I happen to be in the same situation as you were, using a D800 but starting to really feel the need to get something smaller, so thank you as well.
      Even when having access to pretty much anything, it's easy to get caught up in the feeling of needing a better camera or more gear, so I definitely don't blame others for doing the same thing, but like you say, a lot of people seem to completely forget the photography side of photography. It's nice to know that you have an amazing camera and super fast, super sharp lenses, but in the end the practical approach that you are taking is for sure the right way to go. Most enthusiasts, and a lot of pros as well, are over equipped and over speced compared to what they are doing.

    Already own the X-T2 and I think your review is spot on..... I migrated from the canon world primarily for two reasons, weight savings and the retro/direct controls. Keep up the great vids..
