I think this was originally gonna be the last song to re-tell her whole story (dollhouse ep - crybaby ep) but I think she took it out because it didn't match the aesthetic of the rest of the album. but I do love this because the crybaby color book is doing what this song is doing (re telling her story page by page)

Guys, if you notice this song is full of references, such as: Dead To Me, Milk And Cookies, Carousel, Pity Party, Cry Baby and Teddy Bear, Sippy Cup, Dollhouse... maybe there are more and I haven't noticed , but with the lyrics of the song I'll add it in the comment. Note; it doesn't matter if the song was made before or not any song I mentioned above, it may have put together pieces for fans to unravel. {THEORY} I believe the Coloring Book is a reference to Melanie's booklet, which can be found in her official store. The colorful book contains the history of each song and also comes with a painting book with drawings from Melanie Martinez's booklet. The song is also a small passage from other Melanie songs, previously mentioned above. As when she says "There's a girl in the carousel", she makes reference to Carousel, because in the music video the character Cry Baby is trapped, she tries to get free at any cost and reaches out her hands to be released, but when Alphabet Boy appears she is confused and doesn't understand why he is doing this to her. The song may also reference Dollhouse. Dollhouse says that not every family is perfect as in a margarine commercial, as there are problems such as drugs, cheating, alcohol, bullying, depression and others that can be easily found in a family. When she says "Nothing falls within the lines" in Coloring Book, she means that as much as you try to make your family perfect, everything will go wrong in an hour and the problems will all arise at once. "There's a house in my neighborhood with a perfect lawn," that's also a metaphor for Dollhouse, as we all know that dollhouses are perfect, happy replicas. "But inside the kitchen there is something deeply wrong"... does that remind you of something? Yes! Cry Baby's mom drunk at a kitchen table in Sippy Cup. "And that house, it's getting flooded and the walls are falling down," here comes the song Cry Baby and its music video. "When melatonin cries, it makes everyone drown", recalling that in the Cry Baby video, the character Cry Baby cries and makes everything flood, we can see floating toys and other things sinking in the video. "There's a girl at a party, eating cake by herself", in the video for Pitty Party, the character Cry Baby is alone at her birthday party eating cake, she decides to freak out and destroy the cake. "That boy will regret it when he picks up the phone", moving on to Milk And Cookies, when the wolf is in a room inside a cave watching Cry Baby, he watches her for hours through a television, but at some point he gets distracted and picks up the phone, while she puts a bottle of poison inside the cookies and when he goes to eat he ends up feeling sick and dying right there. "Her teddy bear is crazy, he took a knife and chased her", refers to Teddy Bear, as the teddy's love became toxic and he tried to kill Cry Baby with a knife, making her life hell. "She had to kill him, it didn't even affect her", noting that in this theory Cry Baby may have killed the teddy bear, but at a certain starting point the song also makes reference to Dead To Me. And first of all, she didn't literally kill, this is a metaphor for a burial, as if in her mind he was killed by her, that is, she erased her past with him. In Dead To Me she says he's dead to her, same thing in Coloring Book. "Now the girl is at a funeral dressed in black", obviously this excerpt portrays Dead To Me. "I'll be at the wake dressed in black", this is an excerpt from Dead To Me. "Seven feet below ground, rainy day and black umbrellas", a great reference as well. One thing I've learned over the years of listening to unrealeased songs and music in general, is that you have to listen to it and apprecaite it as if you will never ever hear it again. We always think we can hear things again or find them again but in reality that's not always true and we can die any minute. Take your time to appreciate what you have listened to and discovered and appreciate it as if you will never hear it ever again. And if you are fortunate enough to hear it again, it's still a very mindful practice to be self aware enough to know that you might not hear it again and treat it with the respect it deserves. This can extend beyond music into relationships, food, little moments like the sun hitting your face or seeing a beautiful sunset or moments where your pet shares there love with you. Live as if that might not ever happened again so you have no regrets. Appreciate what you have and be the best person you can be. Sending love out there to everyone out there struggling too.
Personally from my own interpretation of everything that is hinted in this song, I at first thought that this song was discussing the issue of relative poverty, which I got from the line 'The walls are falling down' in a metaphoric way of saying that her life is not forever gonna be underneath a roof, due to a possible financial situation happening with her parents. But as I listened to more of the lyrics, especially the parts where she says 'These are the pages to my colouring book' it changed my entire interpretation of everything. Basically to me, what she's saying is that nothing can remain perfect forever and eventually, things that are part of this little world of hers will come crumbling down at a moment's notice. But her, being a child, (In the song, obviously) doesn't understand this, which is why the first line of the song discusses how she's confused of why none of the other children want to share physical interaction with her. She's different from the others and one way or another, she's aware of the world of struggling that is her childhood, but she either chooses to remain oblivious to it all or is literally and legitimately is not aware of what's really happening. What this song has taught me is that no one can expect everything to stay the same as the lyric goes: 'Nothing stays in the lines..'

If you slow down the beginning part and compare it to the song it’s kinda sad. There are parents with their children having fun and cheering for them. “When Melatonin cries she makes everyone drown” reminds me of the beginning of crybaby where the mom goes “omg she’s a crybaby” just sounds like her family doesn’t want to deal with her screaming and crying. In this song it just sounds like the character is misunderstood. Maybe she craves the happiness of a family like in the beginning or maybe I’m way off😅

I’m curious to know if she had at some point considered calling her album “Coloring Book” instead of Cry Baby. If so, this would’ve been the perfect Outro song. I can also tell that “Dead To Me” was potentially going to be on this album.

{THEORY}
I believe the Coloring Book is a reference to Melanie's booklet, which can be found in her official store. The colorful book contains the history of each song and also comes with a painting book with drawings from Melanie Martinez's booklet.
The song is also a small passage from other Melanie songs, previously mentioned above.
As when she says "There's a girl in the carousel", she makes reference to Carousel, because in the music video the character Cry Baby is trapped, she tries to get free at any cost and reaches out her hands to be released, but when Alphabet Boy appears she is confused and doesn't understand why he is doing this to her.
The song may also reference Dollhouse.
Dollhouse says that not every family is perfect as in a margarine commercial, as there are problems such as drugs, cheating, alcohol, bullying, depression and others that can be easily found in a family.
When she says "Nothing falls within the lines" in Coloring Book, she means that as much as you try to make your family perfect, everything will go wrong in an hour and the problems will all arise at once.
"There's a house in my neighborhood with a perfect lawn," that's also a metaphor for Dollhouse, as we all know that dollhouses are perfect, happy replicas.
"But inside the kitchen there is something deeply wrong"... does that remind you of something? Yes! Cry Baby's mom drunk at a kitchen table in Sippy Cup.
"And that house, it's getting flooded and the walls are falling down," here comes the song Cry Baby and its music video.
"When melatonin cries, it makes everyone drown", recalling that in the Cry Baby video, the character Cry Baby cries and makes everything flood, we can see floating toys and other things sinking in the video.
"There's a girl at a party, eating cake by herself", in the video for Pitty Party, the character Cry Baby is alone at her birthday party eating cake, she decides to freak out and destroy the cake.
"That boy will regret it when he picks up the phone", moving on to Milk And Cookies, when the wolf is in a room inside a cave watching Cry Baby, he watches her for hours through a television, but at some point he gets distracted and picks up the phone, while she puts a bottle of poison inside the cookies and when he goes to eat he ends up feeling sick and dying right there.
"Her teddy bear is crazy, he took a knife and chased her", refers to Teddy Bear, as the teddy's love became toxic and he tried to kill Cry Baby with a knife, making her life hell.
"She had to kill him, it didn't even affect her", noting that in this theory Cry Baby may have killed the teddy bear, but at a certain starting point the song also makes reference to Dead To Me.
And first of all, she didn't literally kill, this is a metaphor for a burial, as if in her mind he was killed by her, that is, she erased her past with him.
In Dead To Me she says he's dead to her, same thing in Coloring Book.
"Now the girl is at a funeral dressed in black", obviously this excerpt portrays Dead To Me.
"I'll be at the wake dressed in black", this is an excerpt from Dead To Me.
"Seven feet below ground, rainy day and black umbrellas", a great reference as well.
"Someone just died, but the girl is not sad", for a good connoisseur, half a word is enough.

One thing I've learned over the years of listening to unrealeased songs and music in general, is that you have to listen to it and apprecaite it as if you will never ever hear it again. We always think we can hear things again or find them again but in reality that's not always true and we can die any minute. Take your time to appreciate what you have listened to and discovered and appreciate it as if you will never hear it ever again. And if you are fortunate enough to hear it again, it's still a very mindful practice to be self aware enough to know that you might not hear it again and treat it with the respect it deserves. This can extend beyond music into relationships, food, little moments like the sun hitting your face or seeing a beautiful sunset or moments where your pet shares there love with you. Live as if that might not ever happened again so you have no regrets. Appreciate what you have and be the best person you can be. Sending love out there to everyone out there struggling too.

wow. It's such a shame that this song wasn't in the Crybaby album. I love how this song profiles her other songs she has made.
Personally from my own interpretation of everything that is hinted in this song, I at first thought that this song was discussing the issue of relative poverty, which I got from the line 'The walls are falling down' in a metaphoric way of saying that her life is not forever gonna be underneath a roof, due to a possible financial situation happening with her parents. But as I listened to more of the lyrics, especially the parts where she says 'These are the pages to my colouring book' it changed my entire interpretation of everything.
Basically to me, what she's saying is that nothing can remain perfect forever and eventually, things that are part of this little world of hers will come crumbling down at a moment's notice. But her, being a child, (In the song, obviously) doesn't understand this, which is why the first line of the song discusses how she's confused of why none of the other children want to share physical interaction with her. She's different from the others and one way or another, she's aware of the world of struggling that is her childhood, but she either chooses to remain oblivious to it all or is literally and legitimately is not aware of what's really happening. What this song has taught me is that no one can expect everything to stay the same as the lyric goes:
'Nothing stays in the lines..'

If you slow down the beginning part and compare it to the song it’s kinda sad. There are parents with their children having fun and cheering for them. “When Melatonin cries she makes everyone drown” reminds me of the beginning of crybaby where the mom goes “omg she’s a crybaby” just sounds like her family doesn’t want to deal with her screaming and crying. In this song it just sounds like the character is misunderstood. Maybe she craves the happiness of a family like in the beginning or maybe I’m way off😅
