    Obbe Terpstra is 86. He has no terminal illness but his quality of life is deteriorating, he wants to die in a dignified way. This exclusive report follows him as he prepares to commit suicide.
    "I want to die. I am not allowed but I want to", states Obbe Terpstra. He watched his wife die of cancer and doesn't want to end up like that. But helping someone commit suicide is a criminal offence. His son, Albert, knows of his plans but hasn't been involved with the preparations. "He doesn't want us to see him as a drooling old man. He wants us to remember him as he is now." A month later, Obbe swallows barbiturates. "He was extremely happy. The atmosphere was like a birthday party", recalls Albert. By sharing their story, Albert and Obbe hope they will re-open the debate on euthanasia.

    We put our animals to sleep so they don’t suffer but we force elderly to end in pain.

    People who have nothing to live for, who have lost everything, who simply do not want to be a part of this wretched evil and vile world, should be allowed to die with dignity!!

    I watched my dad die everyday.for months in severe pain. Not being able to eat drink or even breathe. I wish he could have done what he wanted and die with dignity when he wasnt in extreme pain and could have avoided dying a miserable painful death from lung cancer.

    He'd be almost 100 now. He probably wouldn't be alive now anyway. RIP Obbe. His choice. It's between him and his God. Not politicians or cops.

    We human beings have free will which must be respected by others. If this is the time to be selfish and only think about yourself, DO IT.

    This is the way I want to die. I keep myself alive out of love for my parents. I am frustrated... I think friends and family should be more accepting. Do they want me to suffer, and suffer, and suffer, just so they do not have to be sad? I feel it is almost selfish on their part, and I remain trapped by life!

    Humans are living as if no death and conveniently avoid talking openly about it.

    People always mistake suicide with euthanasia. It's very different. Euthanasia is ONLY for people who are either incurably ill and are either waiting to die (a painful death) or for people who aren't going to die of the illness, but are so old that everyone they love is already dead or moved on in their life and/or he isn't able to do anything he loves because of his illness/handicap. Euthanasia you commit together and in peace.

    There are many things right in front of your faces that you do not see. I am very sad for you all that don't respect life. It is the greatest gift a man can receive.

    @Guadalupe1130 i disagree with you
    the man enjoyed an entire lifetime of vision and beauty, and once that was lost he did not enjoy life and didn't want to spend the remainder of it just waiting to die
    he wanted to go in a dignified fashion
    people who are born blind never get the gift of seeing the world, therefor they do not know what they are missing. they can enjoy life in a different way, never having sight to begin with.

    Would this not have been permitted under the Netherlands ruling Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act?

    Nobody gave you your life! Why would anybody have the right to tell you what to do with it or when or how it's suppose to end?
