On this episode we attempt to cover the confusing history G-Force: Guardians of Space.
Like Battle of the Planets, it was based on the original Gatchaman Japanese series, but unlike Battle of the Planets G-Force attempted to be a more faithful adaptation.
But it pleased neither fanbase and has now faded into confusing obscurity.
NOTE: This is not a history of Gatchaman video. There is no mention of Crowds or anything after 2004. This is not a history of Eagle Riders either. This is about G-Force and it's directly related properties.

G-Force was the first cartoon I ever saw as a kid and I fell in love. I made sure to be at the TV every single day when it was on (for what I guess was a week). When it suddenly vanished without finishing the story, I was utterly heart broken. That year I had a G-Force costume for Halloween and no one knew who I was supposed to be.... :(

Same with me. I always called it G Force for years which is why I when I spoke about it no one knew what I was referring to until somebody figured it out and told me I was talking about Battle of the Planets. Then I was like why they called it that? I don't remember any planets. lol

Same here. I was really confused watching the video. I remember around '80 watching the cartoons and referring to it as G-force as well. Hmmm. It was shown on WPIX11 in NYC. Maybe I referred to the actual team name and forgot the battle of the planets title. I even had G-force small di-cast metal toys I got from a Japanese toy store. Which is where I got Lionbot before it came over as Voltron.

Me too, as I mentioned on his other video before this on "Battle of the Planets." I was never aware of the other show from the 70s & 80s until I told a friend of mine about how I was watching this "G-Force" show and he said that it sounded like a remake of "Battle of the Planets" with different character names. He was right. Now, that I've seen this video, I was also reminded of the whole "Eagle Riders" thing too, that I forgot happened as well, and it also jogged my memory of thinking back then, "what's with all of the remakes of this one show all of a sudden?" LOL.

@@darthpaul99 I discovered the real Gatchaman way back in the 1990s. We rented some anime movie and it had a commercial for the 1994 Gatchaman OVA (a remake). I noticed it seemed familiar, then realized it looked sort of like Battle of the Planets which I had loved long before in the 70s and had since forgotten about. I rented the OVA and definitely saw the similarity. I went to the public library and used their internet to research what Gatchaman was. That was my introduction to the original and superior version. It took years to finally get to see them, first on some pretty nice DVD bootlegs, then later on the official DVDs from ADV.

Nothing beat staying late at night watching Fuerza-G, Harlock, all the way till El Show del Fantasma de costa a costa, didn't understand its concept, other than it was a talk show, to be honest and found it kind of boring (well I was a kid and liked the main cartoon alot) but it was hilarious to see Zorak play its band and getting blasted, good times.

I grew up with Battle of the Planets; and was amazed at just how different it was from the OG Gatchaman.
case in point - this one scene that sticks with me to this day involved a young woman who wanted revenge on Galacta for killing her family; but when Gatchaman presents her the opportunity to exact her revenge using their bird missiles, she hesitates and can't bring herself to do it. In BoTP, both Mark and Jason support her decision to show humanity/compassion for not giving in to her hate. In the original version, Ken straight up smacks the girl across the face for wasting their time; which almost allowed the enemy to escape (think Joe took them out before they got away, though).
That scene just floored me, and I fell in love with the OG Gatchaman as a result. No other version will do for me.

Thanks for this. I had wondered what the heck brought about G-Force. It's a shame Tatsunoko doesn't seem to recognize that Battle of The Planets was really their foothold into the US market, and is worthy of a Blue Ray Remastered release.
Don't get me wrong, I dig Gatchaman, but they're leaving money on the table by not pandering to the formative years nostalgia of me and people in my age group. We have jobs, a good many of us are at that point where if we can get the stuff we always wanted, we'll do it.

I first saw G-Force when I was 11. My dad said it reminded him about how he liked Godzilla films when he was 11.
Many years later, there was a re-release of "Battle Of The Planets" on DVD and I bought it. I hated it. If you thought DiC's translation of Sailor Moon was awful, it doesn't even compare to how bad Battle of The Planets butchered the original script.

I was so glad I had the chance to add more G-Force visual elements to the Battle of the Planets comics run. It was BotP in name, but more on G-Force in tone. There were more plans after its 12 issue run, and the Jason one shot, including the Princess one shot I drew that never got published.

Great video, and much respect for the extensive research!
BotP was my first exposure to Gatchaman, and it still holds a special place in my heart despite having the full, unedited original Japanese series in my collection. Sure, BotP was severely edited and it still talked down to its audience, but the voice acting and additional music were both pretty darn good.
G-Force and Eagle Riders are unwatchable if you leave the sound on, and the Gatchaman II "Chickenship" is one of the worst designs ever. The GatchaSpartan was dull, but at least it wasn't an eye-sore.
Looking forward to an Eagle Riders video though, just to see the whole story all the way through!

While I am not a fan of the GatchaSpartan, it did make a slight bit more sense than the original GodPhoenix, in that it was made up of only of each individual character's vehicles, so it couldn't be fully assembled until they were all together. The original God Phoenix for some reason wasn't able to go into Fiery Phoenix mode unless all 5 of the character's vehicles were inside the ship.

As some one who has never seen either I would most likely go for original Gatchaman instead. I ended up doing same with Robotech when I watched all 3 anime that it was made up from and I don't regret it. Macross is classic, while not as good Mospeada is still worth the watch and while Southern Cross is weakest of 3 it's still very enjoyable series. I don't care if people that are nostalgic for American takes calls me anime purist because when it comes to anime I always prefer original to any adaption.

You had everything right up until you said Toonami was basically anime based which in turn is sort of true but sorta not. Toonami was found on the idea of more modern and more adult cartoons for more older audience plus the original Toonami lineup didn't contain any anime it actually contain reruns of classic 1980s cartoons such as ThunderCats He-Man and the Masters of the Universe the original Hanna-Barbera Speed Racer AKA Fred Ladd also Astro Boy Gigantor The Herculoids Space ghost and other such cartoons it wouldn't be until 1998 a year after had launched that are more anime shows from Japan and those shows would include Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Sailor Moon Lupin the Third Inuyasha Gundam Metal Panic fighting spirit slam dunk and other great anime shows. It really wouldn't be until 2000 when it became more anime Focus based then you have more of an anime block also fun fact Adult Swim actually came from Toonami it was actually an adult block on Toonami after midnight which are more adult anime and cartoons.

Battle of the Planets was known as Comando G/Fuerza G in Spanish Speaking countries. I have no recollection of a rerun in the late 80s, but seems unlikely as Thundercats/Heman/Robotech were the franchises dominating 85-90, and Japanese cartoons were dimmed "old/outdated" and only broadcast around late afternoon (with Heidi, Mazzinger, Candy, Remi). Here the intro for Comando G sung by Parchis in 1980 ruclips.net/video/Iab4rowcEbM/видео.html

Battle of the Planets is or was available for streaming on HiDive, Sentai/Section 23's streaming service so it's not as if that's being suppressed.
The first two dubs of Gatchaman both have their issues.
I absolutely HATE the alliterative names and synthesizer music in G-Force. The music alone almost makes the series unwatchable besides the awful renaming of the characters. The character names were better in Battle of the Planets!
BoTP (1978) itself has a bunch of nonsensical changes and additions to make the series more like Star Wars (1977). BoTP was BY FAR more popular than G-Force which as said had VERY limited reruns in the US, most of us didn't see it until the 1990s after Cartoon Network debuted its service.
The third, far more faithful dub of Gatchaman is by far the best of the three English versions. The casting is better, the voices sound more appropriate for the characters across the board, and the fact the original music is intact is a huge bonus. Gatchaman has one of the best anime themes I've heard, PERIOD, and the music fits. It doesn't have that 1970s US pop feel that BoTP had (where they replaced the music; in many places they KEPT the original Japanese BGM) and thank goodness none of the rescoring with synthesizers that G-Force did!
The Blu ray edition is the way to buy this series now. I don't even know if they have the DVD edition back in print of Gatchaman -- I sort of doubt it because the US anime industry is slowly phasing out DVDs for most releases. The only shows they say will get DVDs are standard-definition but even that is iffy since more standard-def releases are being done on Blu ray. Blu ray has higher video capacity so while it WON'T make SD video HD (it would be scaled up like a DVD to HD resolution) you can fit more episodes of a series on Blu ray... They've done SD re-releases on Blu ray and cut the disc count to 1/3 or even 1/4 of the discs they used for the DVD releases!
If you're still not sold on Gatchaman, there is a feature film compilation of 4-5 episodes that has both the dub track AND Japanese audio. It is an excellent film to watch BUT beware that it covers the major story arcs of Gatchaman: the original series just like the 1990s OVA was basically a remake of the most popular Gatchaman story arcs. The Sentai Film's DVD and Blu ray of Gatchaman: The Animated Movie (1978) have the English audio in 5.1 using the same dub cast they used for the Gatchaman TV series AND the 1994 OVA series.
Gatchaman 2 and Gatchaman Fighter are also out on DVD, subtitled only. There are no plans to release Blu ray editions for these series that I'm aware of (they didn't remaster them in HD in Japan yet!) and the sales I would imagine aren't there to justify dubbing those shows, either. To be frank, unless you're a completist, I'd personally SKIP Gatchaman 2 and Gatchaman Fighter unless you can get during a VERY good sale! The original Gatchaman TV series is far and away vastly superior to Gatchaman 2 and Gatchaman Fighter.

I always loved the Battle of the Planets series but absolutely hated the 7-Zark-7 additional elements. To me the show was far better when treated seriously - and much of the content was truly serious, but also amazing and like nothing else on television. Later on I discovered Gatchaman and felt that was really what the series had always been meant to be, so it was a very special find. I still do love any and all G-Force/Gatchaman stories though and I purchased as many as I could get my hands on. Mostly I'm also just a huge fan of Ken Washio aka Mark aka Ace Goodheart. It will forever represent for me, one of my favorites series of all time growing up. (Incidentally I also loved Ultraman and Johnno Sokko and His Flying Robot as well.)

Surprised there was no mention of what they did to the soundtrack. For the uninitiated: They kept the original Japanese BGM, but since said BGM was pretty sporadic and there was a lot of dead air, they elected to fill _every last second of that dead air_ with... one piece of music. The show's title beat. Over, and over, and over, forever. This was by far the most conspicuously absurd aspect of the entire dub. If you think it's an exaggeration, that surely they wouldn't fill _every_ second of the show with the same piece of music... it's actually quite easy to find some episodes of G-Force Guardians of Space on RUclips. See for yourself.

Would you guys want to know more for a possible explanation of Sentai Filmworks and Section 23 films in future episodes? Cause that story alone would make an episode in just about any other web series. The short story is that Sentai and Section 23 are comprised of remnants of ADV Films, after ADV had to declare bankruptcy in 2008-2009. When ADV closed its doors, Sentai and Section 23 were able to quickly recover many of the assets ADV had. This would include Gatchaman, several other titles, and staffing. Much of what actually happened is a bit of an open secret to most long time anime/manga enthusiasts, so finding the rest of the story shouldn't be a great chore.

I was (and still am) a huge fan of the series and the Gatchaman franchise, and perused the dedicated fan clubs and message boards of the time for years, soaking up tons of tidbits and anecdotes.
The three most rewarding things to come out of this fandom was: 1) Piecing together the Wikipedia page, 2) Acquiring all 85 episodes of G-Force (recorded during its first two runs on Cartoon Network), which allowed me to own this rare gem, document its airing history and tons of circa-1995 TV commercials :) 3) chatting with Dean Andre (the series' composer), who provided some fascinating anecdotes on the tight scheduling (85 episodes over a 3-month period!) and dedication behind this production.

Kid Rhino put out a few episodes of each show on DVD in the early 2000s and I was very unimpressed with BotP vs. G-Force. Now that we have the entire original series with a more faithful dub - we finally have the whole series intact. This 2005 dub has some issues but is much better than the previous US versions.
