How safe (or dangerous) is for Americans to visit Lviv, Ukraine

- Many people think that Ukraine is a no-go zone and it is too dangerous to visit it now. However, as in every military conflict and war regions, there are safer and not so much areas.
For example, Lviv in Western Ukraine is a completely safe place to visit with full of vibrant life and culture here. Two Americans from California just visited Lviv and share their recent travel experience.

I traveled to Lviv in April from United States by myself. I meet up with my friend from Zaporizhzhia. It was an awesome trip, used Airbnb and walked this whole area of this video. It was my first trip to Ukraine and will not be my last. I am disabled and felt safe everywhere in the city. Great video Orest!
I visited Lviv a month ago. Loved it. Went pubcrawling with some awesome Ukrainians.
I also came from the UK to Lviv in April this year to do some volunteering work at Front Line Kitchen, and absolutely loved the city. I can echo the same message: I felt safer walking around there than I do in London. A wonderful place and I will be back!

@@onababona6101 actually I watched a documentary set at the hospital there in the early weeks with explosions nearby. You better be quiet if you don't know.

Thanks again Orest! We really appreciate the way you helped communicate travel instructions so people can get to Ukraine during the war. We felt safe during our entire time in the Lviv Oblast. It was wonderful to meet Dr. Aleksander Filts and his team in Lviv who are treating those with schizophrenia. We are very impressed with the quality of work they are doing in Lviv to help those who suffer from this mental illness, and we look forward to partnering with them on projects in the future. We are now looking at planning more trips to Lviv in the coming months.

I went to Lviv in April and thought it was beautiful and vibrant. It's sad to see the windows boarded up in the beautiful Opera house. But what really matters is that the Opera House is still giving performances! It's Inspiring.

Lviv is a historic Polish city. The Lviv Opera was founded by Polish King Jan Kazimierz in 1661 and bore his name for hundreds of years. Many, or rather all, monuments are the work of Poles - the Lviv Railway Station, the Lviv Opera House, the tenement houses of the old town... Lviv became part of Poland in 1345 and city rights were granted to it by the Polish King Casimir the Great. (Kazimierz Wielki ).
After the war in 1945, Stalin took Lviv and historically Polish lands from Poland and incorporated it into the socialist republic of Ukraine. You should know about this. It was not Ukrainians who built this beautiful city, but Poles.
Fantastic interview. So glad that you are highlighting mental health and PTSD issues. What a wonderful man to come there and build bridges.
People going as tourists are contributing vital money to the economy and can also perhaps give one day while there connecting with some volunteer or professional group according to their skill or interest.
I would love to go and if it's possible for me too, I would volunteer at one of the animal shelters which have had to take in and rescue so many war refugee pets and street dogs and cats.. just walking some dogs or spending social time with them or cats would be what I could do to contribute. I hope I will go there and do that.

As long as you don't stay near US/UK/EU-weapons depots (the comedian likes hiding them in civilian zones) you have nothing to fear
You did it again Orest, covering a less-publicized aspect to war. Focus in other media will be mainly on attacks and politics of this Russian invasion and understandably so. But you're helping to fill this void by covering topics that are hard to find and in this genuine journalistic format. I haven't been to Ukraine yet and I'm from NYC, so I'm sure I would feel safer in Lviv and most places West of Bakhmut, which is like 80% of the country😄. Ukrayina Peremozhe

That was a refreshing dicussion. Another Lviv youtuber Nastya Verba has talked about her war depression. It must be very common problem in Ukraine. She can help travellers who want to visit Lviv. She has made great guides for tourists.
Thanks for a great video. Most people who are in other countries would automatically assume that foreiners should stay out of the Ukrain for the momement as they have quite a lot on their plate - with fighting the war. But this video shows us that Ukraine is still open for business, and is still welcoming. So if people visiting the safe parts of Ukrain can help with their economy, then lets do it. Slava Ukraine.
Wonderful. I hope more people who like travelling will go to Lviv. Everything they buy there helps Ukraine's economy. They need that so go, go, go, anyone who desires to do so. Go help them by spending there on hotels, food and tourism.

Civilian areas of Lviv are completely safe. If you want to really help Ukrainian people, you should go as a tourist. Donating money to Ukrainian government or its military is a waste that will go up in smoke.
Even the areas around Lviv are very scenic, with traditional villages among the wooded hills. Of course, the Carpathian mountains further south and west are spectacular.

I am not Orest, but I’m Ukrainian, so I’ll answer - you can look up “Cost of living Lviv” and will see all the prices. You can do this with most cities in the world too, it’s generally accurate.

I’m planning to take Basic Ukrainian Language Course in Lviv starting May 2025. The school tuition seemed reasonable for four weeks. The school advised me to stay in AIRBNB for four weeks. And then take the bus daily to school. At some point in the future I will volunteer teaching elementary school students. Most likely I will stay in AIRBNB for one month to teach.
Any advice / comments / insights are greatly appreciated.

Hi Orest, I am from Turkey and on a motorbike tour all around Europe. Now in Romania, today will go on to Moldova and after that to the Ukraine. Maybe you can give me some advice which roads are best for a motorbike (the greener and up in the mountains the better). Had been to Lviv before but not by motorbike. Loved it. Maybe we can meet there for a beer

I tried again, but the war was going on in her area. Now, I will have about two weeks off. I would love to travel to Lviv. Could you help guide me to finding a train from Karkov Poland to Lviv?

How about the prices today in Lviv (and Ukraine in general)?
That is very important info for many tourists, especially when a lot of places have now increased remarkably their prices now that used to be very affordable few years ago.
For me, it's one of the biggest reasons to visit some place if it's low on prices.
Ukraine used to be one of the most affordable places in Europe pre-covid times and i visited that a lot back then, but i'm afraid that the prices have gone up too much since those days. I would like to have a confirmation about that before making a decision whether to visit Ukraine again or not.
I'm not going to pay 10 euros for a burger, which seems to be the case in most of the european countries right now...
I think the more to the east - the lower prices, but I might be wrong. Renting apartment from locals is a cheaper thing in general, than using airbnb, booking or staying in some random hotels you find.

@@1q-uo3pbI've been everywhere in Ukraine - from east to the west, from north to the south regularly since 2008.
Before Russia took over, Crimea (in the south) was the most expensive area in the whole UKR by far. Ridiculously expensive.
Kharkiv (in the far east) is the most familiar city for me where I've spent most of my time and it wasn't any cheaper that Lviv (far west), especially what comes to the rent prices which were pretty much on level back in 2019-20.
And when talking about burgers, I mean artisanal burgers (that used to cost $5-7 in 2019-20 and now whopping $10), Big Mac in UKR used to cost 50% less in 2019-20, before covid-insanity¤t war hit hard.
I pray for those good times to come back as soon as possible, this current situation with insanely high prices everywhere does not good for anyone.

From what I heard it's insanely expensive yet the service is so awful. It might cost literally more than Turkey or Egypt tour in some cases.
About Kharkov.. some guy from here offer me apartment for 150$/mo, it was in 2023. Don't know the details, but for me it's cheap.
I don't eat in expensive cafe or restaurants, just fastfood-tier food. Craft burgers is probably meant to be expensive in general.

Маєш гарну англійську, хочу лише чемно зауважити, що в англійській мові немає букви, яка в українській звучить як (Х). Щоправда є звук [х] який в англійській записується (КН), англійська буква (Н) ейч, ніколи не звучить і не вимовляється як українська (Х) - це російська школа англійської. В нас же є буква (Г). Саме так потрібно вимовляти англійську букву (Н) тільки з горловим видихом. Хав ду ю - звучить трохи смішно, особливо для американської англійської. З Богом, Оресте, маю надію що не зачепив гординю - це гріх😉
This is the PERFECT video I've been looking for, I'm planning on coming to visit Lviv in December/January, and this answers a lot of questions! I've been a big supporter of Ukraine during this terribly/illegal war being waged on this amazing country and I've wanted to do more, so I thought the least I could do was come visit to support the people of Ukraine with my tourist dollars! I live in Kyiv Ukraine and am in Ukraine now. It is safer than in any metropolitan area of the USA. Here we have an occasional missile that goes off course or gets shot down and has to fall somewhere but unless you are in the military or working in a factory that builds military weapons, you are an order of magnitude safer here than in the USA. We have no violent street crime. No muggings, no carjacking, no armed robberies, no drive by shootings, only an occasional pickpocket. Since Hunter Biden had to leave almost 8 years ago, the child kidnappings have totally stopped too. In a city the size of Chicago, I doubt if there have been 10 fatalities since the war started over 2 years ago. Oh, there are videos of dead civilians when Kyiv was under attack in early 2022 - those were staged with paid actors.
I do not understand why those who moved to Poland a year ago - will not go to Lviv to live there? Looks safe and full of tourists.
Many have but there are millions of displaced Ukrainians, all of whom can’t go to Lviv.
@@CymInUA and I fully understand, and I used LVIV only as a location on W side. I am sure that there are many places where war is not destroying towns and villages - just like it did not Lviv. I was just thinking that it would be easier for many to be on their own territory 🙂. Thank you :-) :-)
If anything should happen or danger escalate you would be stuck at the border crossing for hours … that’s been our experience also air sirens still

There’s also sometimes drone attacks in Lviv ; it does not seem stable enough . Another thing is families who’s male children turn 18 soon will not be able to leave Ukraine so families with teen boys are leaving before they turn 18
