"The Karankawa People" (Kəˈræŋkəwə),are an Indigenous People concentrated in southern Texas, along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, largely, in the lower Colorado River and Brazos River valleys. They consisted of several independent, seasonal, nomadic groups who shared the same language and much of the same culture. There were five major Karankawa clans, during Texas’s colonization. The Copano People, who resided near Corpus Christi and Copano Bay. The Coapite People, who resided near San Antonio Bay. The Cujane People, who resided near Matagorda Bay. The Carancauhause People, the most populous Karankawa group and the culture’s namesake, resided near Matagorda Bay.. and The Coco People, who resided near the Colorado River and Galveston Bay. Their borders rested from roughly Matagorda Bay to Baffin Bay.
