the "instruments" that the boys are playing are extremely old school video-editing machines on guitars. While Jemaine is playing that "instrument" he's editing the video that is playing in the background, then when Brett comes out and plays his "instrument", he's editing the video of Jemaine. Accompanied by the hilarity & beauty of the song this is definitely one of my favorutie things from FOTC.
Michel Gondry directed this episode so it was his concept for this "video" of having the band seemingly produce their own video while performing the song, given it's effectively a narration of the singer's past. Very clever! But probably only spotted by people who've been in video editing suites. Those boxes were probably worthless garbage at the time they were props for this scene but they were very expensive back in the day.
This song made me realise how good they are. Not only is it funny, but it's also poignant, bittersweet, hopeful, sad, it's multi-layered. The music also underlines the lyric, verses being happy go lucky and carefree as he describes how all these people found ways to leave him, the pause in mentioning Carol Brown's departure, like THAT'S the one that hurt him the most, of all the departures, then the chorus choir which just slams the point home. It's a beautifully written song, at a level that rivals Ray Davies (The Kinks) for arrangement, lyric and taking something seemingly ordinary and making it those things mentioned above .. funny, poignant, bittersweet, hopeful, sad. It's in denial and self aware at the same time. One of my favourite songs in the universe. They deserved recognition for this one creation, if any of the many really great tunes they've written. But this one. This one's at another level.

That's one of the main reason's they're such a great musical comedy act. Their music is genuinely enjoyable. I've listened to this song over a thousand times I'm guessing, and it never gets old. I'll never forget watching it for the first time, being blown away by how outstanding it was as a comedy song and a great song in general.
Across the years, spanning eras of trouble and turmoil, through wild swings of fortune and bruising periods of despair, the Choir of Ex-Girlfriends abides as a musical comedy refuge which picks us back up and pulls us onward in a spirit of good cheer.
this song always stuck out from all the others because it's actually beautiful, not just funny. the coastal youth choir does an amazing cover of this song which is equally as funny and beautiful!
I was looking for this to share with a friend because "Carol Brown" is one of my favorite Flight of the Conchords songs. Cracks me up every time I hear it on my favorite comedy radio channel.🤣 I love the girlfriend choir. It doesn't hurt that I have a sister named Carol.

This episode was directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), who has a lot of experience with amazing music videos, such as Fell In Love With A Girl by The White Stripes, and the alternate video for Beck's Cell Phone's Dead. I don't know what it is about this whole sequence, but the visuals and the song amaze me, and the lyrics are incredibly funny yet emotional. My favorite episode so far.
I like that in the background, Bruce who turned out to be a man (0:59) is singing in the choir (1:41) and Jemaine still counts him as an ex-girlfriend.
The most sad flight of the Concorde song, especially when you consider this is a fantasy sequence which means this is all jermaine doing this to himself. Every criticism from the girlfriends is everything he thinks about himself.
"Joan broke it off over the phone. After the tone, she left me alone" HAHAHA OMG this is so genius!!! And I'm a writer!!! This is such great stuff!! 74 y/o lady and just discovering FOC There aught to be a law against THAT
My favorite Conchords song... and partly because this great video was directed by Michel Gondry, who's probably most famous for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Another fun fact: a young Sia (not pictured) sings in the choir of ex-girlfriends.
13 years later, I'm still trying to figure out how it was made. Knowing Gondry, he wouldn't do something the simple way if a difficult way was available, so my guess (for the straight on views) is that they used the building facade, blocked off a section to the left of the left door (visible in final frames) and filmed a projection of the rear visuals. Then they filmed the performance part in front of a green screen with a door (for Brett), the floor, the railing and the airconditioner, then combined the two. Can't see any other way to do it.
Bret is killing me with his happy-go-lucky dancing and clicking his fingers. I love these guys, I'm glad on their albums some of the songs are extended.
When our sons were away at college I had DVRd this episode of Flight of the Conchords. For their friends who were still around our house was their home away from home and they would frequently come in at night while we were asleep to watch it. I would be awakened by laughter 🤣 and got to hear this song 🤪. If you have not seen this episode of the show definitely check it out!

The only thing more epic than this song is the video. Together with the song, this is truly masterful.
"This guy is a fool....eeew" Very sweet song!! I listen to it every day!!
Jen said she'd never ever see me again, when I saw her again she said it again
Every now and then I need to hear this song. One of their bests in all aspects.
pure talent. I could listen to this group when ever I feel down and it'll turn me around😋
Beautiful!! I can't stop listening 😍
Underrated song. Those harmonies are excellent
2:42😂😂😂 I thought I told you to shut uh-uh-upp...
I absolutely love this song, the whole structure and melodies. How they worked all their songs into a comedy series is just genius.
I was looking for this to share with a friend because "Carol Brown" is one of my favorite Flight of the Conchords songs. Cracks me up every time I hear it on my favorite comedy radio channel.🤣 I love the girlfriend choir. It doesn't hurt that I have a sister named Carol.
I love Brett's dancing in this hahaha 😂 he's adorable!
Magnificent song.
I hope that you will stick around, tu tu, tududu du tudu"
That's an impressive amount of talent from those ex-girlfriends. Apparently, Jemaine does well for himself.
One of my favorites ❤been listening to you guys since I was around 13 and going on road trips down the Baja to Cabo San Lucas, such great memories listening to the albums traveling across the Baja by car and finally reaching our beautiful destination 😀
This Australian episode is by far the funniest with some great songs. Needed it. Thanks
this music is PERFECT ! So funny, entertaining and beautifully played.
"I've lived here, 'cause every time I'm on the phone with my mom she says I sound like marilyn monroe.
- Did you catch that? - What are you deaf? Marilyn monroe.
- Oh, marilyn monroe.
- Yeah.
- What about her? - I talk like her now.
- She sounds like her.
- She does sound a bit like her.
Yeah, I suppose if you squint your ears"
Told you so
"squint your ears" is possibly the best thing ever said by any human
This world needs some more Flight of the Conchords right about now
I LOVE THIS BAND! Saw them live! Even better than video. Amazing!
I love that so many others appreciate this as much as me
This episode was directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), who has a lot of experience with amazing music videos, such as Fell In Love With A Girl by The White Stripes, and the alternate video for Beck's Cell Phone's Dead.
I don't know what it is about this whole sequence, but the visuals and the song amaze me, and the lyrics are incredibly funny yet emotional. My favorite episode so far.
It's so interesting to me that Sia helped sing backup vocals for this song!
Claire Rylands whoa
Wow, and here I'd always doubted that broad would ever do anything worth listening to -- great job, Sia!
Whoah! Really? so many amazing people in this show.
I like that in the background, Bruce who turned out to be a man (0:59) is singing in the choir (1:41) and Jemaine still counts him as an ex-girlfriend.
This has to be one of the sweetest and most serious of all of their songs. I listen to this everyday. Quite sentimental, actually.
I love this song, and the way they filmed it. Sooo wonderful. ❤️❤️❤️
Came here from Tom Cardy's parody.
this song is a nice gem
this song is so good. that ethereal chorus of girlfriends singing is mesmerizing. "mona, you told me you were in a coma."
The most sad flight of the Concorde song, especially when you consider this is a fantasy sequence which means this is all jermaine doing this to himself. Every criticism from the girlfriends is everything he thinks about himself.
:'-(
"Joan broke it off over the phone.
For all the Tom Cardy fans… put some respect on the OG version! FOTC are the undisputed 2nd best folk parody duo of all time!
2nd best? Who would be the best then?
@@west5385 Like of the Conchords!
@@west5385 they used to introduce themselves as New Zealand's fourth most popular folk duo band
Bret is killing me with his happy-go-lucky dancing and clicking his fingers. I love these guys, I'm glad on their albums some of the songs are extended.
Heard this 12 years ago.... Revisiting.... The best
This always pops up in my head whenever I eat cereal.
🎶 "Mmm, would you like a little cereal?" 🎵
"Who organized all my ex-girlfriends and got them into a choir to sing?" Hilarious!
Was it Steve, perchance? Steve!
somehow this actually makes me sad 😂 who in their right mind would leave Jemaine?!
"There must be fifty ways that lovers have left me" is such a nice wink to Paul Simon's song Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover :)
"Flo had to go I couldn't go with the Flo"hahahaha VERY sweet song. Jemaine has an incredibly soulful voice!!!
