Triple through joint! Two 4c x 185 and one 4c x 70

- A while ago I completed this task at a job in #mildenhall #suffolk it is a parallel feed of two 4c x 185 cables joined to a 4c x 70. Fortunately it was a nice sunny, dry day. The job was delayed because the joint that was purchased initially was way too small.

When we use the roll springs on HV, we wrap tinned copper mesh around the armours first for a few wraps, put the braid on top then about her couple or wraps and hitch it on before putting the roll spring on top. Another trick with the spring is to put a piece of Emery paper under the end of it to pull on to tighten it up then pvc tape over the top.
It also doesn’t look like there’s much sheath into the shell? We always put minimum 40mm sheath inside and rub it up with 60’s grit Emery cloth as resin doesn’t stick to the shiny sheath and water will track down and into the joint

Tony, dont use your calf to rest on when you cut things like the green sleeve on the earth strap. One slip with the knife and........ DAMHIKT!!

Neat trick with the constant tension spring on the earth braid. Were they shear bolts on the cable clamps? and was the tape used over the connector blocks anything special - hi di - electric stuff etc or are they relying on the resin & distance apart to prevent flashover. Loved watching the old lead/copper cable jointers, bitumen sleeve, armour, lead sheath, oil impregnated paper insulation copper.. All had to be sweated and wiped.. then the sleeve filled with molten bitumen. Blow lamps, pots of molten lead and bitumen proper old school stuff..

That armour to braid earth joint didn't look all that secure - is it only held on by the tension of that metal strip, or is there some additional crimping etc. that you didn't show?
It’s initially held on by the tension of the metal strip but then it’s secured by the resin itself when it’s poured into the joint. The amount of force that is applied by the coiled metal strip is pretty excessive, I assume that’s why they provide it in the kit.
Nice one , I would have thought they could make those bags of resin bigger for the purpose of filling those large joint cases , looks like that one you did took a lot of bags.....

I forget how many it took now but it was more than was supplied in the kit. They ordered a lot more and I used most of them. Over 15 I reckon.

It’s an exhaust cutter. I happened upon it about 8 years and it’s changed how I do cables!! I love it.
Quick question, I have seen splicing the shield two ways. One is twisting the shields outside of the splice case and using some type of shear bolt connect to splice the shields and the other is using a mesh similar as you have in the video. Are both acceptable?

Exhaust cutter. I've used them on 4c X 400 and as small as 4c X 10. They save so much time
I hate it when each core is misaligned and your trying to bend everything around each other , and then get the cover on , and then there’s the dribble of death when the resin going in …..
Apprentice electrician here. What really caught my eye having done a few big cables is that you used a totally different method for detaching the armoured strands (twisted one piece around the the outer sheath) did you score the strands before bending them? Only been taught the hacksaw way of doing things.

Can you show 3 way connection for example to another building like a new build (onto existing cable) where you have to branch off the armoured cable from the road. So I mean one main cable with three old houses already on it I want to connect another house to the existing cable? Hope that makes sense lol. What is 185 is it the voltage rating for the cable? Thanks
185mm² is the area of each conductor.
After scouring armoured, why did you tie a piece of armouring around the cable.
It prevents the armouring from bending up and becoming a "fish hook" which can cause problems fitting the gland (if you're using a gland, I know I'm not in this case)
Ah, changed days lol. I'm absolutely all for connector jointing, but it looks so ugly to someone who used ferrules and solder! 🙂
I'm ashamed to admit I have an exhaust cutter in my workshop and I never even thought to use it on SWA.... Mind you 90% of the cable I use is H07 so swa is a rarity.
Quick question bud. How come you've gone from a 185 to 70mm? And have you got a link to that tool you used for the SWA sheath? The one that has a chain, never seen them before 😁
It was due to the size of the board in the field end enclosure. It was just a small dB but the cable run was 300m+ long. They designed it I just try my best to make it look nice. Sometimes I do wonder about the qualifications/experience of the people doing the design.

@@jointechcabling9103 thanks alot mate! Yeah it's a weird design, it's like you're spurring off the radial supply which doesn't make sense but it must do if someone has sat and thought about it 😂
In case of short circuit the supply fuse will blow without a problem, the small bit of 70mm cable has negligible resistance.
Fuses in the new board protects the 70mm cable from overload.

A breech is bringing 1 onto a through main up our end, we’d call that a combination joint as it’s bringing 3 ends together
The manufacturers call it a branch joint. Normally you would "tap" onto the larger cable with one side of the connector and connect the branch to the other side. That way you would have 2 bolts on each cable. Never seen it done this way and not sure if you can only have one bolt on each cable. I'm thinking current carrying capacity of the connector.
I've never seen it before and I asked what they wanted because I was unsure. This was what they came back with. 👍🏻

I haven’t. These are LV cables. I’ve been wanting to get into HV for a while now, just never got round to it. I don’t know exactly how to do it though.
@@jointechcabling9103 ah that makes sense now. I’d like to get into the HV cabling but the courses are around 5k but you really need to get on the ones supplied by UK Power Networks which I think is really hard to. Another question.. what’s the purpose of joining the 2 cables into 1 ?
@@johncanty2847 that’s pretty much what I’m struggling with. Also the amount of hv that’s available unless you’re working for ukpn or similar is minimal. If I find an Avenue I’ll post it on here or on my Instagram page.

@@johncanty2847 I am a spark, me and my father had our own company. In 2008 we got hit hard by the credit crunch and in 2010 decided to fold it up. I went into cable jointing after that. I always did the big cables that we installed. My father taught me how to do them.
