Your video perfectly captures what São Paulo is all about. São Paulo is a chaos filled with culture, as well as the center of a fiercely competitive corporate market. I think there’s still so much more for you to discover. As the guy in the video mentioned, we live here and still haven’t experienced everything the city has to offer. I was born and raised here, and I’m still amazed by new things all the time. Bad things can happen, like the power outage you experienced. But, living here, I can say that, statistically speaking, the bad things that might happen are far outweighed by the good the city has to offer. One last tip if you want to explore more: don’t travel too economically in São Paulo.

I really appreciate the deep reflections about my country. Interestingly, the expression “everything ends up in pizza” is a metaphor about the politics, corruption, and the sense of impunity - there is no justice, nothing really happens to the corrupts, and they always find a way to get rid of the consequences (the pizza part). Thank you again for the warming and thoughtful video. One of the reasons that I left my country almost four years ago was the violence, but I still miss the people. 🇧🇷

I'm sorry that happened to you; that blackout was crazy and something I’ve never experienced before-at least, not that I can remember. This year has been especially chaotic, and it’s happened twice. Some people think it might have been sabotage because of the political tension between the left and the right, but we’ll probably never know for sure. I’m glad you’re okay and that the situation didn’t change your view of the city. I’m Paulista, and I love São Paulo. Some of my favorite places are Luz Park and the old city center. I hope you enjoyed São Sebastião as well-it’s one of the most beautiful coastal cities in São Paulo state. And yes, when everything seems to go wrong, we order pizza, just like the guy from the hostel staff told you. I don’t know why, though!

"We end up in pizza" is a popular Brazilian expression. I've been living here for almost two years. So, yes. It's real.
Dan, I remember how you were robbed in Mexico City very early in your stay there, and you said that you wouldn't let one bad person decide how you would view an entire city. That is the best attitude to have.
I've never allowed myself to cower under a bed. I love Brazil. I love Mexico. I love Colombia.
Do bad people exist? Sure. You can't control that and you can't let that dictate how you live your life.

When this happens again, again and again, you wonder till when you be luck enough to survive. In my case, I lost all hope of seeing things get better. Then the great chance to move in Canada came in our lives and I took that oppottunity as if it were the only lifeline. After 16 years in great Montreal, I still think it was the best move of my life.

I believe the first meal in the alley was kinda overpriced for such a small plate, but it seems to be in a touristic spot so...I don't get what people find "touristic" about this graffiti alley, but whatever. But you can eat better and cheaper even in São Paulo.
With ~10 USD you can "all you can eat" in a steakhouse in Americana, a town founded by american Confederates refugees 1h drive from São Paulo.
I know you're canadian, but there's no canadian colony as far as I know.
PS: insecurity sucks but what frustrates us most is the sense of impunity. "It ends in pizza", as corrupt politicians go eating to mock us, after they get absolved from their crimes for the people they named into the judiciary. Police arrest bandits; socialist-indoctrinated or corrupt judges releases them soon after.
And while I had my dog shot and a gun to my had when I was 13yo, the first time I was mugged was last year in Europe. I was in Barcelona and 2 thugs were following us in the Metro.
Once one jumped my brother, I threw him into the ground and armlocked him, but no one helped, including my brother. After I saw no one gave a fk, I let the guy go fearing he'd turn around and st@b me. We went to the "Mossos d'Esquadra", the catalan police, but they also didn't give a fk either, which is why I evade as much taxes as I can because the state only exist to serve itself.

I think what the hostel receptionist might've said is "it all ended in pizza" (tudo acabou em pizza), which is a phrase from political commentary where something like a corruption scandal goes unpunished, so it ends in pizza
In politics I think it means like... everyone just shrugged off the problem and went on with their lives as if nothing happened, which amusingly is exactly what happened at the hostel in your case
I used to hear this phrase on TV during the mensalão scandal in 2005, and to me as a teenager at the time it evoked images of politicians sharing stolen assets like slices of a pizza, but I think the intended image is simply the corrupt gathering up at a pizzeria and celebrating not being punished

You were very unfortunate. This kind of power outage is not that common in São Paulo. Actually, the average hours without power per year in Canada is three times as high as in São Paulo (18h vs 6h).

Dude, trust me. São Paulo's energy companies are notoriously infamous regarding transparency. They privatized it in 1998 by breaking Eletropaulo into four competing private companies, which only competed for three years when one prevailed and bought it's way to monopoly. Now, Eletropaulo belongs to an Italian company (Enel) and every year São Paulo continually breaks its record of power outages.

Poor girls... Brazil really sucks for women sometimes.
You were afraid about your stuff being stolen, but for women it's much worse, as you can imagine.
If I had to guess, someone tried to enter the house from the roof and the scream was probably someone who saw it.
    They then called the police.

Dude - It's just completely irresponsible of the owners of the hostel to leave the gate open in the middle of a power outage and go home. They are just playing games out of laziness to not take responsibility for the situation, they should hire somebody to take care of the place during the night in case of power outages, but they chose to just leave the door open and place a candle and go home hahahha. come on .. thats so bad bad bad. 1 star rating

Well, honestly dude, this last part of the video was totally unnecessary. First Brazil suffers a lot from its reputation for being insecure, we don't need any alerts about this topic anymore. This is a super passive-aggressive Canadian. I live in Canada myself and honestly every single day there is a shooting in a different neighborhood. Regarding the electric company same shit happened few years ago here in Canada, but it was worts because it was winter, We spent a week with no electricity in one fo the most coldest winter. Canada is too far away of being a paradise.
