  • A Short Hike is a charming game with a refreshing focus on what actually makes its story work. Let's talk about the role of nature and technology in its story about community, family, and friendship.

Some time ago, maybe a year or so I was looking for a video about game called Little Inferno. That's how I found your channel and watched some of your videos. Maybe I'm not the biggest fan who have watched everything but I really admire your style and work that you put into making this series. Now to the point of this comment... I wanted to write something here because A Short Hike is a type of game that have drawn me to itself and even after a year from my one night playthrough my heart filled up with warm memories of this "Short Hike" and entire body went into this relaxed mood the moment I heard its soundtrack. I'm really glad you made this video. I'm a type of guy who plays a game that I love and don't analyze it that much. I just sink into its world and immerse myself into it. I highly recommend this game for everyone seeking a one night relaxing adventure.
I hope I made this comment and my feelings about this game understandable. It would be easier if I wrote it in my native language but then no one would understand it :)

I never saw the 'Nature vs Technology' theme you did. If you talk to Aunt May multiple times, eventually you will mention that the call is about "the thing", and Aunt Ray imminently apologizes for forgetting about "the thing" and starts giving you comforting words. Clearly something stressful and hard to talk about is going on in Claire's life. I am guessing you missed that part. Getting the call at the end of the game was still satisfying since if meant something completely different. Aunt may stresses that everyone in your family has gone to Hawk's Peak, so the journey up became a journey to connect with my heritage for me. Getting to the top and talking with your mom really cemented that for me.

for anyone who got the itchio bundle for racial justice and equality last year: this game's in it, if you're not in a place where you can allow yourself to buy the game separately rn!
thank you for the video, Professor; it appearing on my RUclips subscription list made me finally play the game, and I cried about it @ 2am. it's really good, and your vid made me appreciate A Short Hike even more :')

Interesting analysis , but I had a completely different experience with the game.
It was clear to me at the beginning that Claire was very anxious to receive this call and I figured that it was important. Claire doesn’t seem like she wants to do this big hike so I thought there’d be no way she’d go if she didn’t NEED to receive this call. I related to her a lot as someone who finds relaxing easier than a big scary hike I would just put off if I didn’t have something external driving me to go do it.
From that point on the game to me was about mystery of finding out what the call was, and that drove me forward and up the mountain. Overall i felt the game had a really deep empathy for Claire from very early on, her good traits and bad, and so it wouldn’t go for a message that didn’t validate her. I’m not trying to say I’m better or anything that was just my experience.

It's awesome that you're talking about a game that I have played through, I picked it up last summer when UT came to Switch, highly enamored by it's free roaming gameplay and late 2000s DS like graphics, I'm actually a fan and am happy to take a deeper look at this great title.

I loved this game and from the very beginning I thought it's quite clear we're expecting an important phonecall that requires decent cell reception hence needing the climb. A nice anecdote about growing up and conquering your own battles.

the nintendo DS sold very well, and many, many people live on or near volcanoes. I am all but certain that *thousands* of people have played a Nintendo DS on top of an active volcano. Ask some Japanese or Hawai'ian people if they or someone they know have played a Nintendo DS at the summit of an active volcano, you'll probably get some interesting responses.

This is such a beautiful game and you do it a great service. I picked it up in Itch's BLM bundle last year and it became one of my favourite games.
Your analysis was great and candidly delivered! My favourite aspect of the ending was Claire's personal growth for having stepped outside her comfort zone and being able to tell her mum that she was having a good time (which in turn reassures her mum and gives her soemthing to be happy about). This game is about so many things and that's wonderful.
    Keep doing what you're doing👍

That reading, that the game is about nature vs technology, is actually what stopped me from finishing it. Even though I enjoyed the exploration a lot. I should definitely come back to it.

The whole "nature vs. technology" thing kind of sounds like the old argument that poetry was inferior to real life because it was not nature but an immitation of nature and therefore distanced people from the truth. Love correction if this is off.

This video couldn't have come in a better time, I am in the middle of learning to disconnect from my phone for longer periods of time and remembering to check on important stuff without checking on other not-that-important stuff is a learning process. O
One point right at the start that I felt like I could add, is that for some people, any kind of stimulation can become fatiguing, even "being on nature" can be somewhat of an overstimulation of "Enjoy the nature and only the nature for two days straight" feeling for me. And I need to "rest" from it.
Taking some time to play a game after a hike or swimming in a lake and "resetting" my attention allows me to look at nature with a fresh perspective and enjoy it better.

  • @Mr_Case_Time

Personally, I think the underlying difference between technology and nature is that technology speeds things up and makes things easier, whereas nature makes things more difficult and requires more work and time. Patience is like a lot of other things in life, you have to practice it to be good at it. When we’re getting a dopamine hit every other second, we are practicing immediacy, and that might bleed over to other parts of our lives. We drive faster than we need to, we get upset right away if something takes longer than we think it should. However in nature, you have no choice but to wait for the fish, to spend time and energy building a fire, to deal with mosquitos and other bugs, and try to get good sleep without a fan. In short, patience is difficult to practice when surrounded by technology, but it’s easy to practice when surrounded by nature.

Are you "ignoring nature" by sitting outside and reading a book? Or writing? Or painting?
Nature is a beautiful and refreshing setting for just about anything you'd want to do in it. Otherwise all we'd do when we go camping is stare at trees.

Really good video! It’s interesting how the game goes against preconceived notions about these kinds of narratives.
Also, not quite as intense as your story about playing your DS on a volcano, but I can’t help but remember the time my parents took me, a very sports-disinclined kid, to a long baseball game on a vacation, and I spent most of that game playing Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak, much to said parents’ frustration lol. Also remember playing Friends of Mineral Town on a camping trip, and my dad being baffled why I wanted to play with my pretend farm and animals when real nature was right there lol

The fetishism of the natural has nothing to offer us, those of us deemed unnatural.
