Bro the comments on this character are so cringe. You’d think everyone’s dad is getting them as a kid. That kind of stuff is beyond rare but you normies want to act like it’s an everyday thing scary men bad…. Get over it
The fact that i almost cried watching this video proves two things to me. One, the effectiveness of Silent Hill 2 as a game. And Two, dumbsville’s ability to tell stories. Bravo
Silent hill 2 has one of the greatest video game soundtracks ive ever heard. Day of night is something i sleep too on a daily basis and there is something so beautifully haunting about Reversed will and laura plays the piano
Agreed! Making Peace is also very soothing as well as the leave ending music where James Walks off with Laura (Peace and Serenity) is also very soothing, I recommend the channel Endless Nights if you want extended ambience of literally the entire game!
While I enjoyed the remake overall, I still vastly prefer the og soundtrack. The og is way more consistently ethereal and strange sounding compared to the remake slightly watered down and predictable ost. Something about the original SH2's sound design and ambience is a mostly lost art nowadays.
The creator is super passionate to make this as perfect as possible. I really appreciate both OG and Remake. Always gave me chills and makes me cry everytime.
There is just something so sad about in the stillness ending James bursted into tear with only a gentle touch and a simple question from his wife, nothing in silent hill can break him but a sign of closeness from his wife immediately makes his emotions crumble
It can't be understated just how impressive the remake is. Somehow, of all the studios that they could've chosen, they chose fucking Bloober Team. And by some miracle, Bloober actually managed to do the original justice in the remake, even doing a few things better in my opinion.
What a great breakdown and commentary on this game. It's by far and away one of my favourites that I've watched about SH2R. I'm one of those fans that came in way late to the game, not finding an appreciation for the franchise until PT dropped (which, by the by, GREAT integration there). I've learned the story through osmosis as a long time gamer, but never had the chance to play the original. I see this as a companion to the original, where both have their complimentary strengths and weaknesses. I also think on the whole Bloober did an amazing job on it, and I'm thankful I never lost my cautious optimism about it since the announcement a couple of years ago. You're an amazing storyteller, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else your channel has in store. Glad this got filtered to my recommended feed.
The cutscenes in the original were all pretty cool especially Mary's voice acting. The thing that was really off for me in the remake was the cutscenes showing extreme closeups on Maria & Lauras face. I think the developers were showing off their face animation but just because they could doesn't mean they should.
Fiction exists specifically to explore and discuss ideas and thoughts. There isn't a single topic it cannot handle because it isn't real in the first place, it only engages with the viewer/reader in their mind and the said engagement is entirely optional. So if a topic is bothering to the audience member, they don't have to engage with it. This of course doesn't mean topics cannot be handled poorly, any and all topics can, but they can also be handled well. It's not a question of whether or not fiction should be allowed to do something, it's a question of how to do those topics well or in a way people want to approach them.
I'm starting to love your positive reviews a lot! The way you talk about them and the way they are edited feels like your making your own story with it. I would love to see more of this in the future!
It was when the length and pacing of the story matched it's run time. Stretch that out to twice as long and your perfect horror story starts taking on water.
Only around 6 minutes in, and already I'm once again in love with your ability to allow things to be serious and still add really stupid and hilarious edits.
I haven't played SH2 yet but I imagine I'd really like Angela, given her backstory and character and especially how it her trauma isn't just magically overcome...because that's so real. Recently I saw Elfen Lied and I honestly found myself liking it quite a bit and one of my favorite characters Mayu I feel is also a good example of an SA victim. She is unable to trust people, she isolates herself, the trust she does develop is easily broken, she's appalled by others being sexual and she's very compassionate towards people who are suffering because she understands their pain. I think SA is a serious topic that really should be tackled in media, acknowledged for people like me who have been through it. But it needs to be done with an extreme amount of care, perhaps only by those who have experienced it themselves. Because like you said, to those who haven't been there it's alien.
Luke Robert’s already was in my mind for my vote for best performance at the game awards but god the stillness ending confirmed it for me. Such an emotional powerhouse that had me ugly crying for a good 30 minutes.
All memes aside, this was a great video! I like how you managed to keep this one more serious, but also left the classic charm of your other vids. tbf I think that 'You have been here for two decades now!' is a slight jab at the fact that even after 20 years this game still is relevant - and also how remake culture be remaking old games because no triple A studio knows how to create original gaems anymore.
I dont think I'll ever be thankful for the things I've had to go through in life, but at the same time I feel privileged to be able to connect to certain pieces of art emotionally, as a result of my experiences. This was a great video.
I would like to add to the abstract daddy fight. In the beginning after he knocks you onto the ground and walks towards you, what looks like the backside of it is thrusting on the figure under it. It’s very quick but it’s there if you look closely. That fight effed me up man, I knew what to expect as I played the first but I wasn’t ready. That fight blew me away. Where as the fucked up version is the real hotel. This is speculated on from a note you find.
Also I feel like the loop could still work if we consider how time works in silent Hill, since to us we’ve been in silent Hill for decades but to Laura it could have been days, seconds or minutes each time she encounters James and always expecting him to behave the same like they’re playing some type of game.🐱
I think Dumbsville might be one of the only creators I've seen to effectively utilize the "2 for thee and 1 for me" method of video creation. If it's under 40 minutes it's a pretty good video made for entertainment value first, if it's over the 40 minute mark, it's made as an art piece, to say something hard. I respect that so much especially in the current environment of RUclips
Dumbsville, sorry but I'm about to yap your ear off with this comment. I was born in 2003, so I was able to experience a lot of older games. I got into a retro game phase this year and got my hands on a PS2 emulator so I could play the games of my childhood and reflect on them. That being said, I didn't have access to SH2 as a kid, mostly because it was way too mature for me. Even though I have no nostalgia for this game, no other game I've ever played has had such a big impact on me. I luckily had the chance to experience the og SH2 right before the remake came out, and man, other games may be outstanding works of art, but SH2 is an absolute masterpiece. This game had me questioning so many things about the nature of man and the character of James Sunderland. To me, SH2 made me feel more connected and invested in James' story than any video game protagonist, and that MEANS SOMETHING to me. I'm a 21yo Christian girl relating to this (maybe) 30-something man who unalived his own wife. Part of me still wants to believe he did it out of mercy but I know it's not true. I got the "In Water" ending in the og and in the remake, which makes it sting even more. I'm starting a new game on the remake and hopefully getting the "Leave" ending. Anyway, sorry for making a giant essay comment you might not even read, I'm just glad to know that one of my favorite RUclipsrs is just as passionate and influenced by SH2 as I am. This game is incredible, and thank you SO MUCH for making such a reflective, and in-depth video about it. Seriously thank you.
I was told about Silent Hill 2 by my brother who really loves the game and wow I understand completely now He really was just sitting there and eating pizza in a town full of monsters

I remember playing the OG as a kid, and having some kind of like weird nostalgia for it, but I never got past the apartments. I love how in the remake James is truly tired and dry but also realistic cause life is like that sometimes. Also it's crazy to me how silent hill 2 is like the outlier of the series since both 1 and 3 are about a cult which was the original premise
Spoliers: The best part is where James saves Zelda from Albert Wesker and Wario, then there's a big QTE dance off at the end with Pyramid Head, Lara Croft, Kirby, and Geralt of Rivia.
Funny, this released the same day as the digital release of the SH2 remake OST, two pieces of SH2 content I was hyped for releasing the same day, neat. BTW, listen to Anam Cara, it's peak. Edit: I am not at that part of the video yet so I hope u talk about this but in the scene where Maria gets mad at James after he says "anyway glad you're alive" I think the OG was so much better, when Maria screams it sounds like someone who doesn't get mad often getting mad, it's scary. In the Remake, it doesn't have that same impact.
