watching this back in 2020, after christoff got his power ballad in frozen 2, this interview aged really well
My heart breaks in watching this. "Looking" was incredibly resonant and moving for me. It's such a shame that it wasn't given more time to come into it's own. To be sure, the acting was expert, and hearing J Groff talk about it here makes me think that the power of the performance was, in no small part, a consequence of his own identification with his character.
Really interesting to hear his that personal experiences resonate with Patrick.
What a fantastic career he's having. Not so high in stardom that his life has become unreal (think Mariah Carey), but still enjoying all the recognition and opportunity to do different things.
So glad you said that about facing each other. I am old enough to have known but I DID NOT KNOW and my gay friends never said.I think we're all learning.
He's so lovely. I wish Looking went for a full hour, or at least had more episodes in a season.

Watching this after Frozen 2 came out is amazing because Jonathan Groff did get his ‘Let it go’ in Frozen 2 (Lost in the Woods). I’m so happy that his career on and off broadway is going amazingly.

I must admit that the season one of Looking wasn't totally mind blowing for me, but the season two did picked up its paces and storylines, now I wish the show hasn't been canceled, looking forward to the movie version though!
Looking was such a great series and should have gone on and on, I think the trouble was and is that us in the UK can accept more and be OK with a show like looking, with all the sex and gay life, we just take it with a pinch of salt and are happy with it, we gave the world queer as folk, in the good old USA, it comes across that you are not as ready to put up and accept a full gay series with full on gay sex, so as money and power talks, I am sure it was stopped by some very unhappy people in TV land, bloody shame as it was so good, loved watching it in the UK and now miss it..... Bugger the moaners, bring it back.

*u Nico* A year after this interview, he had a major role in HAMILTON, which earned him a second Tony nomination. Furthermore, Season 2 of his Netflix show MINDHUNTER premieres next month (August). He also has the much-anticipated FROZEN sequel out later this year. I would say his career is very much alive and thriving!
I met him yesterday, and he is just such a genuinely lovely person. I hope he comes back to Broadway at some point.
