Going to be a sad day in September when this mill shuts down. It will be the first time in 133 years that paper will not be manufactured in the flats. Unfortunately, I really don't foresee this mill opening again. It's a logistical nightmare at this point with both the Neenah locations being much more accessible. I would expect the old parts of the mill to be apartments/condos within the next 5-7 years. I hope they keep the old FRP stack at least, but I doubt it due to ongoing maintenance costs it just wouldn't make sense.
Hello Mick. I worked for Great Northern Nekoosa in East Millinocket, Maine from September 1979 to April 2011. Both mills in East Millinocket and Millinocket have shut down and have been demolished for scrap. We made everything from newsprint to coated paper. In 1970 Great Northern Paper merged with Port Edwards Paper and Nekoosa Paper to form Great Northern Nekoosa. When that happened profits from our Maine mills went to build a new paper mill in Georgia. Then we watched as money was drained away from our mills to other start ups all over the country. In the 1980’s machines in both mills started shutting down and many got laid off…including me. I got recalled back and saw 3 different buyers own the mills and each time we lost benefits and wages. Great Northern Paper operated from 1899 to 2014. Pixelle Specialty Solutions owns the mill in Jay, Maine and it was just announced a few days ago that mill will shut down in early 2023. Maine has lost 8 pulp & paper mills since 1992. Wisconsin and Maine always lead the nation in paper production. The paper industry is so uncertain these days.
I would love and happy to buy from neenah papers but what about the shipping prices it's very very costly to ship till India. Is there economy shipping?
