I have been so close at times to making John Henry and me t-shirts that say, “We don’t go by the development chart.”
People don’t come in standard sizes or abilities. We are all different and have varying strengths, and sometimes even those strengths change from one day to the next, or even one hour to the next. Every person succeeds or struggles in their own way.
Something that parenting my son has taught me is that every human being is a sophisticated, complicated, and extraordinary creature. That’s something to be celebrated regardless of the schedule on which our uniqueness is displayed. There are no charts that can accurately track the magic of a human being.

As a single mother of two sons with autism I get it. Now a teacher of immigrant children with autism, I get it even more. ALL my energy and passion goes to this diagnosis.
