My advice for new stiff plastic parts in the 90's boxed barbies is Heat. Take the parts as is still in the brackets and either place it in really hot water, the sun [not direct out door sunlight but what comes through a window or into the house or use a hair dryer. This will make the plastic soft and tangible so that it bends freely and soften the plastic on a molecular level.

You need to apply heat to it, use a hairdryer next time and the damage won't happen when applying anything like this in the future to avoid damage.
