This is the best fish basket trap video I've seen on yt! You used actual basketry skills, instead of jamming the spokes into the ground or doing rings and filling in later -- yours makes for a much better basket IMO. You used a stone flake for the harvesting and the bending/relief cuts, to illustrate how it could be done in a survival situation where no tools were brought. You caught actual fish in it, and even put in a go pro to show them entering and staying. Even the video editing was excellent, not wearing out the viewer with tedious or lengthy repetition, but working in visually-compelling techniques like the pan out from the bottom of the basket to show the length like it's growing. Well done, Tom! By far my favorite video on this topic!
You probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
@Remington Harlan i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Got to admit, I rarely comment on such videos as usually it's not explained as well as this was. I honestly feel like I could have a fair shot at making a fish basket now. Great camera work and awesome explanations. Thanks!
I discovered you channel today and I am watching your videos since 2 or 3 hours... I don't remember how long as I am mesmerized. I watched plenty of survival and primitive technology videos but you definitely go into my TOP 2. Please continue !!
I choose a topic that I want to learn about and then watch quite a few videos on that subject. This is quite easily the best fish trap, and the best composed & choreographed video i have seen on the subject. I really am quite impressed with this video. Concise, to the point, no yammering on about non-essential topics, no stuttering... just a well constructed video. You have my admiration for this truly excellent production. I have very seldom seen an instructional vid so well constructed as this one has been.
In a survival situation this is very valuable because you just place it in the water and you can focus on other things. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, this is one of the best fish trap weaving vids out there. Keep up the good work 👍
They taught basket weaving at Cub Scout Camp; I just thought it was a stupid craft. This video and his other videos show how important it is to survival. This dude is awesome!
Awesome video! For a survival situation this would be amazing. If you’re near a body of water this would be one of your top priorities, set up sapling spring fish traps for the first day after you have shelter and fire to clean your water, hope for fish on the spring traps and spend the day making a quality basket trap and catch fish almost every day with it, giving you more time to make a few more and once your food is secure it would take very little effort you just check them morning and night.
The best fish trap video iv seen. Great catch too. You didn't use bait and got a catch first day!! Your awesome lol. Iv been practacing these over the past year myself. Making mine from bramble vines in a simular weave, but iv found there only effective after they've been set for a week or so. Thanks for sharing.
+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Hey, thanks, cool you've been experimenting with it. I did have some bait at the back, thats why they are always crammed around the GoPro, admittedly I did 4 days in that pond using boiled eggs and then liver pieces seemed to work best.
+Tom Mcelroy-Wild Survival Nice one. I'll give them baits a go. The Willow shoots are a good idea. Much easier than de-thorning all the bramble vines iv been using. Thanks Tom, crackin video. Andy
+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Thanks man, Im gonna try other fish and streams, hard around here to do this legally though :) If you get any video or pics of the ones that are working for you I'd love to see them.
+Tom Mcelroy-Wild Survival Thanks Tom, I will do buddy. That's it, when we haven't got anyone to learn this primitive stuff from, it's all just trial and error. For me... Mainly error lol. Iv shown practacing weaving baskets and a couple of fish traps in a few of my wild camp videos, (more recent ones) but Iv only in last few months been getting results from them. I'm getting alot of catfish with dog meat. And seem to get crayfish and small crabs with chopped onion. I want trout, so maybe the chicken liver will draw em in? I weaved and set five new baskets about three weeks ago. Went back a week later to add the funnels and someone had stolen all five 😠 A more secluded spot for next time I think. Cheers bud
Very nice video! Watched it after I saw you in the 7vsWild preparation, also what would you do if you were allergic to any fish and shrimps and molluschs as I am? What could be good food sources?
Your patience building that fishtrap is adorable. Hours of work. How do you keep your thougts calm while weaving? I guess I'd sing "NANA NANA nAnA NANA Fishtrap" all the time.. ;)
When I saw Tom's haircut and heard his voice I thought he was a bit soft. Turns out he is one of the hardest and most knowledgeable survivalists out there. In fact, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who is quite on his level.
I tend to make a larger one. But it is definitely something that I always make. But in the short-term. This is why I Carrie a lightweight collapsible hexagonal shape net fish trap. Floding flat 1" × 10" × 12" weight in at only 6.8oz. it pack easily into a pack. As you stated their invaluable. In the short term. This gives me 1 quick way to catch fish. But this is just one of several ways I have to catch fish. But my favorite thing about it is that it passive meaning. It's working for me so I can be doing something somewhere else I need to be do.
this trap usually used tribes in asia, especially in indonesia, i had ever use this trap i my village near the river in java island, its pretty tradtional handycraft, you can also make it from bamboo, i like ur video tutorial, good job, nice to meet you in youtube
Good, easy to understand instructions! Maybe give examples of substitute limbs instead of willows? South Florida doesn't have alot of willows, maybe palmfrond?
I'm a bit stuck on how you make the funnel part... the technique for beginning the base of the basket is seemingly much different than the technique that the funnel ultimately would be implementing. What am I missing here?
Tom McElroy-Wild Survival so in a survival scenario any liver or parts will do; squirrel liver for example? I say squirrel because thats what is most abundant and easiet to catch/kill for me
Great trap and awesome weaving. I just discovered your channel and do hope you will do some more. I have noticed it has been some time since your last one. I hope you have not moved on to something else with no intention of continuing these survival videos as they are awesome.
+Eddie Starnater Thanks man, I was so stoked it worked out as the GP would only last for a few hours...., stupidly I put the bait around the gopro so there were a few times that one fish would block the lens when the other fish entered...live and learn.
Wonderful video. appreciate your teaching style and considerate editing.Big question that I didn't see addressed. What bait or lure or location brought the fish in???
In my place. People make it just like that. Some bigger, some smaller, depend to what size of fish you wanna catch. I placed 7 - 13 small trap in the river when i was child. Its wonderful experience.
I just discovered your channel and am now about to binge watch every episode you have. Thank you for going into detail and explaining how these things are created along with showing step by step via video. Fantastic work and honestly watching you weave the basket was somehow soothing and peaceful. My only question is did you use any form of bait at the bottom of the basket to lure the bass in?
My phone would not work right on your reply that sent me to a website that locked me up. But thank you for posting another way of making a crawdad trap. Cannot wait to try the different ways I now know to catch them things
I love your work. It does seem to me, though, that you could speed this up by skipping rows with your weavers. Your baskets are almost watertight. What do you think?
Extremely awesome video Tom McElroy. Thank you for creating and sharing. 7:48 - 7:55 Your dog was wondering when were you gonna take him/her to the dog park to get laid.
The only thing that I didn’t see…How do you end with one vine and start another? Do you have to tie them together or what? Also how do you end the top of the basket? Seems like to me the vines would be sticking out all around the top of the basket and it wouldn’t be secure. Curious about those 2 things. Thanks 😊
Folks in my neck of the woods used to put a hollow log in a creek with one end stopped up and the other end narrowed down. They'd check it every day and catch a lot of fish, because fish are curious and seem to like hanging out in dark holes. No bait needed.
Did you put food in the basket or would fish go in regardless? Very cool.. I know how to weave baskets but these techniques are new to me. Thanks for sharing!
Is this Willow Reed? I live in Indiana and not to sure if Willow Reed grows here, also any recommendations on replacements for Weaver and Spokes would be great!
What kind of plant is the bendable weavable? It looks like wicker but ive never seen a wicker plant. At least not in ohio. And how do you make the funnel part without it having a base?
In a survival situation, would it be feasible to make one of these out of large pieces of bark woven together? Spikes would still need to be added of course. Just thinking that this might be quicker, and easier to make in a short period of time. Love the videos! Subbed!
Yeah man, i think it should work. Been meaning to try that out, it wouldnt look as cool, but it would be super fast to make. If you try it let me know. Thanks for watching

@Remington Harlan it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D

@Jon Terrence Glad I could help :)
The first explanation of a basket weave that I easily understood, and felt complete. Subbed

That basket is not only a tool, it's a work of art. Beautiful!
Very very good. Can't stop watching. Always said fish traps are the most effective tool in a bushcraft arsenal.

Absolutely fantastic work as usual. The small details you include are invaluable. Thank you.
Thanks Tom, this is the best how to fish basket weave we have seen, and my son and I are just about to make one. So thanks again.

Both of those things shouldn't be an indicator of how tough a person is, or how they act entirely.
Artful, creative, and extremely efficient. Excellent!
I have been binge watching your skills for hours. This has always been my dream since I read Paulsen novels to my grade 6 students.
Awesome footage with the goPro! I used river cane for a trap recently but not as aesthetically pleasing as yours. Great video and tutorial, Tom!
Brilliant, I have not built a fish trap since I left the island of Guam! Great survival skills !
Great videos u made! I don't watch lengthy n boring videos but yours are great and very informative! 👍🏽

Excellent skills matched by excellent videography
not only that stuff you make works great it also looks great. it would say we are dealing here with some masterclass skills.
I don’t know which is most beautiful? The man, dog or basket!!
You're quite the resourceful and intelligent person
In this video, we see that his shoes make a guest a appearance.

Superb video! The fish trap looks great. It was cool to see the inside of the trap in action :)
Thaks for sharing - Martin
Probably the best implementation of the basket fish trap that I've seen yet. What were you using for bait?
+Andrew Butler Thanks man. I used pieces of liver.
where the pieces of bait just sitting there?
Probably inside towards the back to draw them in further.
Tom McElroy-Wild Survival so in a survival scenario any liver or parts will do; squirrel liver for example? I say squirrel because thats what is most abundant and easiet to catch/kill for me

wow, you have skills sir, i enjoy all your vids. i hope you have more videos come out soon.
Those fishes are paid actors
He probably put food in there to encourage them to go in
You know how you know your super wrong is that you don't even know the plural for fish
then you're good director
Lol
Well, yes there is. You would refer to different species of fish, as 'fishes'.
My phone would not work right on your reply that sent me to a website that locked me up. But thank you for posting another way of making a crawdad trap. Cannot wait to try the different ways I now know to catch them things
If you have no willow, I've found split bamboo works also. I submerge it in water a day or two though to make it more pliable.
Hey I'm sorry but how did you make the second basket?? I don't understand how you managed to get the base of it to be open like that
I love your work.
Can you please explain how to start the smaller basket since it has a hole
Thanks for providing all of this great stuff.
Excellent video my young friend, well done !

Hi Tom, great video!!! I love the fact that you did take the time to show the actual catch. What bait did you use?
+matthiasgr555 Hey, I tried a few things and the one that worked was little chunks of liver.
thanks !
You're a true survivor

Hey Tom you are very skilled where did you learn to weave like this its similar to Africa and India star pattern base of the basket nice ...
Nice one mate. We need people like you to share indigenous knowledge before we wipe it all out. Cheers!
Awesome seeing a new video. Also, great footage.
Folks in my neck of the woods used to put a hollow log in a creek with one end stopped up and the other end narrowed down. They'd check it every day and catch a lot of fish, because fish are curious and seem to like hanging out in dark holes. No bait needed.
THIS GUY, KNOWS WHAT HES TALKIN ABOUT 100% AND HE CAN WALK IT JUST AS WELL...
Interesting how the fish hug the sides, Great Vid & knowledge. You could sell that basket for big $$
Why is there a single dislike? This video is perfect
Great photography Tom!
Did you put food in the basket or would fish go in regardless? Very cool.. I know how to weave baskets but these techniques are new to me. Thanks for sharing!
It is better to add food but you have a chance of one just goin in there
Tom Thank You for Your teachings! outstanding topics and outstanding presentation.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. How long did it actually take to make the trap?
What do you do with the ends of the branches when they run out? Also, how do you start the inner basket?
Who taught you this skill? Amazing.
I put the trap where fish are going to be with no bait it's worked in ponds and streams for thirty years for me🤠
THAT WAS INCREDIBLE.
Nice video....great job...and fish got to live.....for now right...!
Great video !!! The only problem is the music 😑😑😑
One of the best traps I've seen. Thanks. Any chance you could make a large box crab trap?
just used this thing on craw-dads and it had tons in it. I imagine crabs would be the same, but yeah that would be sweet in the ocean.
Well made and classy video. Subbed.
Another excellent video - keep up the good work :)
What a great catch at the end... WOW!
Basket turned out nice.
Dude, your videos are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing! Now, I have hours more of watching to do! Lol

great video you got skills bro
Neat. I wonder if it would be possible to use a backpack for the outer piece... at least you can use the basket as a pack :)

sorry for the huge amount of questions
yep. anything flexible would work ok.
