    most of the things that went hard seem to have contained sugar (ketchup and bbq have a significant amount of sugar, toothpaste often has sugar or sweeteners), which probably caramelized or otherwise congealed over time. products intended for skin (as well as mayo, being oil and eggs) contain a lot of natural oils that don't play nice with plastics- ask anyone who's tried using normal hair products on a wig. oils are harder to fully remove and will build up over time if not totally cleaned, which is how you get greasy fur.
    the acetone and ethanol, being high-strength chemicals, most likely dissolved parts of the plastic into one another (why they became solid).
    i would definitely warn against using large amounts of essential oils despite how well it did; the synthetic fur might be fine, but certain essential oils (namely tea tree, and eucalyptus which is actually toxic if ingested) can give you chemical burns if left on your skin for a long time.
    vodka (or vinegar) and water however is a tried-and-true method for spot cleaning fabrics, especially things you don't generally want to get soaked through in a machine- just make sure nothing ELSE you clean your suit with will react with them.

      Acetic acid or vinegar is actually commonly used as a disinfectant, and vodka has a good amount of high purity ethanol in it. I believe the difference between the ethanol and vodka this would be the other components of the vodka and the fact that commercially available ethanol is not nearly and pure and clean as ethanol in beverages.

    • @triangleshiny
      @triangleshiny 4 года назад +6

      PupperCut oh i knew vodka had ethanol in it, i assumed it was the reverse and that straight commercial ethanol would be more pure but that makes more sense.

      also i forgot to specify but vinegar specifically when combined with other substances (namely bleach, which pocari has used to clean her suit before, and is something i know people use to whiten suits) can be hazardous. in the case of bleach, mixing the two can produce chlorine gas, which is highly toxic.

    The fur most likely melted/stuck together from the acetone because PLA and ABS plastics are actually cured using acetone. You can see it quite often in 3D printing when people want to smooth the prints out- though for something as thin as fur it will cause it to chemically melt together.
    (I used to work with 3D printers a lot back in the day so I learned a lot from working with them actually XP)

I know you already made a video on that subject, but seeing you test recommended cleaning routines would be awesome. Like various isopropyl/water ratios, carpet cleaner brands, brush types and techniques, laundry detergents, etc. If that would be too complicated to do, maybe you could just make a video reviewing several kinds of fursuit shampoo that are sold in the fandom.

    Also, alcohol markers can leave permanent stains on a fursuit, I did my own test with a Swatch to see if I can change fur color with it and it worked. if put in water the color can seep out into the water and stain other parts of your suit. It leaves a sitcky feeling(but thankfully the fur stays soft) and has a faint marker smell to them. You might be able to spot clean most of it out, but it will definitely leave a color patch

    Acetone melts plastics so wasnt suprised. Also for the essential oils dawn dish soap is best to use as a first cleaner then spot clean, also most sodas are used for getting out tough stains specially club soda.

    Acetone is used by doll moders to strip away factory paint off of doll faces. They also warn a lot to wah your doll faces asap after using the acetone because it can melt the plastic/rubber or cause disfigurements. Acetone is also used by nail techs to take off nail polish, including gel nail polish which is UV cured.
    I am by no means surprised that it ruined and melted the fur XD That stuff is intense!

    Making this video must have been a terribly long and painful process. You relay need to respect the effort that Pocari goes to to give us quality content.

    I’m here for the cleaning product tests. And the grass stains, as a comically clumsy and short-sighted suiter (I haven’t worn my first head in ages because I can’t breathe properly in it) living in England, I have a horrible feeling my handpaws are going to have a green tint (at least they’re grey).

    Vodca is actually used in theaters to reduce smell and sanitize the costumes, because most of the costumes you can't wash at all. So it is not surprising to see that nothing has changed

    I learned that some stains look kinda neat, like wine and coffee!
    I kinda wanna make a suit that has coffee or wine stains for particular colors of the fur. I think that could look really cool.

    I was pretty surprised with the vinegar, but also not really. My grandmother used to keep these lying around in spray bottles a lot. She would not use them as cleaners, per say, but more for a clothing item or a rug that need a bit of freshening up. Just a few squirts, leaving it to air dry and it was pretty much a cheap odor remover/sanitizer. Again, I know this is pretty much a very cheap thing, but if you think about it there is probably vodka at most of the room parties so......free suit sanitizer? (PSA: I do not own a fursuit, this is simply something I concluded with watching this awesome experiment and also from past experiences.)

    life hack:use regular soft fabric instead of fur to avoid brushing and cutting errors
    and also its harder to stain

    Not surprised about the vodka! We use it on theater costumes when working with expensive broadway costumes to clean it between wears because there’s zero time to wash inbetween wears unless it’s a travel day.

    SCIENCE!
    I was definitely most surprised by the drinks. Especially the cola. I figured that would dissolve the fur fabric. Also definitely sticking with isopropyl going forward.

    • @triangleshiny
      @triangleshiny 5 лет назад

      the acid in cola isn't really strong enough to dissolve anything with any real integrity (otherwise it wouldn't be safe to consume! you *might* get some results with either a stronger mix or very thin material, but faux fur isn't exactly delicate)
      once the carbonation goes flat, it's mostly just sugar, flavoring and water, and once the liquid part evaporates enough, all you've really got left is a kinda-gross hardened/thickened sugar residue.
