  • With thanks to The Odyssey Online, these are 12 ways to recognize someone who has worked at Walt Disney World, and my reactions to each- along with a few admissions of personal guilt.
The animations used in this video were borrowed from the site where I found the list. You can find that original list and site located at www.theodyssey...
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

When I was in WDW last, my group and I couldn't figure out how to get to a certain attraction in EPCOT. And we looked and sounded it. A few going over the park map, others trying to look over the crowds (we're a tall family), and a couple arguing which way to go. Out of the blue, this really nice cute college-age gal came over with one of the warmest smiles and asked us if we needed directions. Almost in unison half of us shouted, "Oh God yes!" She smiled even wider, asked where we were trying to go, and gave us real easy simple directions to get there. That and answered a bunch of other questions we had, which helped improve our time in EPCOT even more (like the nearest restroom ... LOL). Afterwards and as our group was leaving, I thanked her and asked for her name so I could let her boss know how great of a job she was doing. She laughed and said it was her day off. That floored me. She took time out of her day off to help a group of complete strangers. She wished me a magical time and rejoined her group of friends who I then noticed were standing nearby smiling at us and her for helping us. This is one of the reasons I am such a fan of WDW. :-)

Being former military and spending a good chunk of time working retail, I can vouche, it's hard to get by terms, mannerisms, or behaviors I've been trained for-now that Im working hospitality, the same thing is happening, just with another job. Even when Im off the clock and in another store or hotel, I find myself in 'work' mode... I guess you never completely leave the job! Thanks for the warm memories and insight :)

The whole "Knowing your way around the parks" thing? Yep that's true with me, both LEGOLAND and Disneyland Paris are ingrained in my head and literally know where everything is at the Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios respectively for the latter. Still get nostalgia over Disney Theme Park commercials because I either saw some on TV or on Disney VHS tapes when I was a kid. And yes I've been guilty of finding hidden mickeys in places that aren't Disney theme parks.

  • @kathygoodman6159

Oh my, I can relate to so many of these even though I've never been a cast member. I see hidden mickeys everywhere I go lol. I tear up at Disney stuff all the time no matter how many times I see them. That duck commercial had me crying..hard. Right now I miss Disney World so much that anything having to do with Disney makes me cry. This is silly, but it's the hardest thing for me about my husband losing his job - not being able to go to Disney World.

There was this story I heard from another guest. Frozen Ever After stopped in the middle, and one young girl was asking why the ride stopped. The guest told her that Elsa must have accidentally froze the track ahead, and they have to thaw it out before the ride could continue.

I was laughing so hard while I watched this. I'm a former CM from the Disney College Internship ten years ago (MK, Tomorrowland Attractions, Stitch Side). I've been nicknamed Disney Girl at one of my current jobs, a grocery store, and you better believe the first time I heard about a "milk spill" in dairy, I had a hard time not laughing. I do ALL of these things, even a full decade later.
EDIT: Another way to spot us is that we have a TON of Disney merchandise, often in the form of things we use every day. I have a Mickey and Co. purse, a Stitch hoodie, a Mickey ring, and a Stitch keyring that I'm pretty much always seen with when I come into work at the grocery store. I had a Mickey decal on my last car (which I intend to replace when I go to WDW this October, since I have a new car), a vast majority of the shirts I wear are from the Disney parks, I sleep with a Stitch stuffed toy and I have Pascal sitting on top of my piano... so yeah, TONS of merchandise.

I live about 30-40 minutes away from Worlds of Fun and head there at least once a week, it would be cool if I worked there one of these days, but I will of course learn how to drive. I'm the same way with maps at parks like Worlds of Fun, Silver Dollar City, and the American Disney Parks, I never need a map, but I do get them to collect them, at new parks I always gets lots of maps to collect but get familiarized with the layout fast.

Almost the same here. Maybe 2 or 3 or 4. Every Feb here in Pensacola there is a con called Pensacon which I volunteer for. We use the Disney point. Sometimes the Atendees at Pensacon don't realize they are on the 3rd floor when the ask me how to get to the second floor from here. I even have the one time story,. In line for Living with the land. Behind Mother carrying daughter on shoulder. Daughter drops cloth Elsa doll. I bend down and pick up the doll and hand it back to the daughter and I said this. "This time don't Let it go," Oh afer I said that. The mother heard me turned around and smiled and let out a little chuckle. I sometimes wonder if that could have been a magical moment Also at Pensacon we volunteers also can't say I don't know to a question.

A bit of a silly story regarding the Fantasmic! soundtrack from my honeymoon. We were on a Disney Cruise of the Mediterranean on the Disney Magic, at dinner at Animator's Pallet. Well, this restaurant has a couple of different shows based on the night you're there (if you stick with the rotational dining every night you WILL see both shows) and this night was the show which includes some of the Fantasmic! soundtrack and even has an appearance by Sorcerer Mickey. Yeah, once that came on my husband and I were both in tears...I don't think that there's any question about why we would trust Disney with our first cruise ever.

Some of these are true for us fans too. I find myself doing the Disney point as often as not. I use Disney terms such as cast member, backstage etc as well as abbreviations such as cm for cast member and BTMRR for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Of course, some of this might be due to the fact that I own and manage a forums site that's focused on Disney and mainly on Disney World. And I definitely see hidden Mickeys that truly aren't hidden Mickeys. I once was waiting for the bus to go home from Target and used my phone to take a picture of a wet spot on the pavement because it was in the shape of a hidden Mickey.

You know that quote that goes “how do you know someone is vegan? They’ll tell you” yeah that. But college program. My friends still get confused by “DAK”... number 11 though, people can SENSE the CM. But also I couldn’t watch someone struggle, I headed in a couple of hours early (like you said XD) and a poor guest dislocated her knee on the main st railway tracks (yikes). There was no way I was walking away from that, so I formed the human wall until things got sorted. You can never switch it off, good or bad! My fave castle “line” is Prince Charming’s ESPN 😂

Let me give you all a WDW hint I got from the DVC CM who helped me with an account issue. I tried to get reservations for Beauty and the Beast in April, SIX MONTHS before my arrival in October and it was booked solid the entire 10 days we are there. That has never happened in the 20 years I have been going to Disney. She said they do have a lot of cancellations the week before I would like to go. Sooo, I will try again the week before our arrival. Thought it may be useful to ya'll. Good luck! (And I struck out getting reservations at GF for dinner with Cinderella. Sheesh. My daughter heard the evil stepmother tells Cinderella to go do the dishes and Cinderella gives her a funny response. I just wanted to see that!)

If someone said ”Code Red” I would go ”Oh, Red Alert? Where?” Totaly not a Star Trek Fan, heh.
And for the asking where things are I totaly know that. I go a lot to theatres and I have bern asked things like Where is the bathrooms and Where do I get my tickets many times, and I have never ever worked in a theatre of any kind. Sometimes I guessed it was cause I have a black shirt but it hapoen more often than that so I guess I looks like a guy who is good to ask things like that. Ive even been asked if I was a part of the shows at times when I had a cats make up or costumes and i always replay with a no since I dont want to be read as a cast member. Its anoying at times but fun that anyone could imagine me being able to be in a show.

For me I start a lot of stories with "I had this one patient.... or "I had this one call" or "I got dispatched once for...." also, being an ROTC cadet in high school, I still have tendancy to say "sir" and "ma'am" and still snap to attention for the national anthem. I still have acronyms from this job ingrained in my head, I dont say oxygen anymore I say O2, I dont say "drunk" anymore I say intoxicated or ETOH, and I spell things out phonetically over the phone!
