I did almost the same thing. I had a large ALICE and put Fastex buckles on it and green foam where it needed padding. When MOLLE came available I upgraded the shoulder pads and added the hip belt, and added a sustainment pouch to each side. I kept the 3 mag pouches intact and used them for smaller items. The large ALICE was great for bulky items and cold weather gear. I eventually went to a medium ALICE with the same mods as I was carrying less items and less weight. And some of those items were now more compact. There is nothing better than an external frame to carry heavy loads. And an external frame also allows you walk upright with your head on a swivel. Rather than stooping over to support the load with an internal frame or frameless pack. The medium was designed to carry 50 lbs and the large 75 lbs. studies were done way before Viet Nam that Soldiers should not carry more than 45 lbs in their ruck in addition to their weapon and fighting load on their web gear. Twenty to 25 lbs have always been the sweet spot as a civilian. Best pack ever made. I know most people want a separate pocket, pouch, and dividers, but the bucket style main compartment can hold more and larger items. I use the internal radio pouch for my hydration bladder. My grand kids will inherit mine.
Nice! Great points. The Medium is excellent, and definitely a better option for the extra pouches when needed. The large is about max width with the trees here to allow for stuff on the sides. Any tips for quieting the ruck? The straps creak a bit rubbing on the frame.
@@EnduranceRoom Haven't actually done this on my pack yet as I'm trying out my new jaakari M, but I've heard putting thick duct tape/ electrical tape will help with creaking. Great video as always!
@@Tom-zf6ylHave a medium frameless alice thats my fav, reworked belt and new shoulde pads and added sustainment pouches on the sides but now its wider than...... major increase in storage tho. I think I still have a large alice with external frame ( which adds alot of weight, it's steel) but I did a pretty detailed camo tape job to it and it turned out pretty good.
On my medium Alice pack I attached the tech buckles with zip ties so I have the original buckles. I also attached the molle waste belt and molle sleep system pouch to the frame. I also updated the straps to the newer padded setup. I also added the molle canteen pouches one on each side. This has worked really good and is comfortable for me.Good video.
I've seen videos where they sprayed Flex seal under the top flap of the lid on the ALICE to make it waterproof again. looked like it worked pretty good. I have a large and two medium ALICE packs in what my wife calls "camping stuff". I might be in my 60s, but I still have toys. I prefer the external frame packs myself. I have a LK35 Swedish pack that I might try the extra pockets on. I also have a couple of really beat-up Alice pack with no frame or straps on it that I bought dirt cheap that I can get the pockets off of. Great idea Jess now it gives me something to work on now.
I love the larger pockets addition. I have a spare lc1 I might experiment on. I've already done the fastex lid mod and compression straps. Only thing different is I also used the molle shoulder straps on mine. I couldn't get that metal cross bar to not hit my back until I swapped out the shoulder straps. Now it's hands down the most comfortable pack I own. Even better than the full molle 2 and the ilbe pack.
Nice pack Jess! As your well aware you know how much of an advocate I am for the tried and tested alice pack. I've said for along time that I need to show you my alice set up so I need to produce something! You have a few excellent adaptions here! And what I will say to everyone else wondering about an alice, you will have a pack that can be adapted to absolutely everything, and it punches far above it's weight in terms to price!
That's awesome, Jess! great job. I also put the Molle waist pad on my large Alice and a few years back, I found a compression strap on Ebay to wrap around it because I hated how far the large pack hangs behind you. I'm not brave enough to sew anything to it and I don't want to ruin it. I have one that is in brand new condition. Plus, I suck at sewing. I would like to find some more pouches that I could add to the sides. 👍👍
Nice mods my friend. I just added a MOLLE waist belt to my medium ALICE pack and it makes a HUGE difference. I think that you may have yours upside down though as the 'hump' in the belt is supposed to be facing down. But, if it is comfortable for you that is all that counts...
Thanks very much. You know, I forgot all about that. I connected it years ago and flipped it that way to allow me to set it on the floor. It fit well enough either way, so it just seemed better suited upside down.
Greetings- Those are some nice additions to the old Alice. Ive got 1 large and 2 medium packs that Ive already added the disconnect buckles. Im currently working on a Molle 2 main pack attached to a USMC plastic recon pack frame. Under the main pack is enough room to attach a USGI waist pack to the frame for added storage. The way you put that compression strap on is, as you mentioned helps with keeping the weight centered. I wish they would of let us use compression straps back in the days on a 15 mile ruck march because it would of definitely helped. Thanks for another cool vid and you guys be safe out there. Carry On-
Nice! You got some good options to work with. I haven’t used the Molle 2 pack, had one and gifted it to a friend. Seemed like a great ruck. Just a guess on the no compression straps for the rucks, but maybe it was to make it more difficult for the training effect. Have a good one my friend. 🤝
Thanks for showing, I like the additional pouches. My large ALICE LC1 is modified too. For example, I added a "lift up the load to the upper, horizontal metal frame" strap inside of the pack (like you can find for example on the USMC FILBE pack) This strap helps ALICE to have not such a hanging "belly" when loaded. It lifts up the loaded pack and transmits the weight up higher (it´s really recognizeable difference) Cheers Torsten
Hey Torsten! Thank you! Those are great ideas for sure. There is definitely room for improvements on these old packs, but they do make fun projects. The nice part of having the big belly of a pack is being able to load it in a hurry. Not really a priority in most situations, but I can definitely see how that would be beneficial in less than ideal circumstances. Cheers!
@@EnduranceRoom Hey, yes I agree about the advantage of the ALICE Pack when it comes to load it in a hurry, or just damn big, awkward things. Like you said, it's fun to be creative with it 👍
👍👍👍 .. Hi Jess .. Nice Mods with probably more to come (continual 'work in progress' 😊). That 'Malice' Pack. Man, it looks very much like my 'Backpacker Boulder 75 litre' Backpack, bought back in the early 80's at 'Camp and Climb' in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa .. still in use and with some still advertised privately on Google. I no longer do any distance 'treks' with it. It now gets more use, when needed, as a replacement bag on a shopping trolley frame (the two-wheel pull-along type). Much easier on the hips and knees and ideal for grocery shopping or a trundle into one of our forests via well-maintained paths or along-ways the Rhine Pathway to some favourite spots. I don't envisage getting myself an Alice Pack at this stage in my career development 😏 .. but it's always nice seeing what others are doing and importantly, how. Never too late to learn something. Always good to squizz at your posts .. thanks for sharing 😊. Take care my Friend, you and your Family and until next time .. Tommy
Hey Tommy! Thanks my friend. Nice adaptation to keep your pack in service! Pretty brilliant honestly. 👍 ALICE definitely isn’t the lightest or the prettiest, but it is very resilient. I have had to make repairs on other newer packs, mainly from stitching breaks when I over tensioned straps. I haven’t ever had an issue with this on the ALICE stuff. I working on it as an exercise to keep my mind busy, getting the load sorted out with things that would be useful in case of suboptimal circumstances. 🏔🌲🤝
Love the new look. I also did away with the 3 mag pockets and doubled up on the pouches chopping up another shabby ALICE, also cut the chopped up pack in half to get a snow collar from it and it really feels like i've maxed its potential now. Great vids keep them comin!
Thanks! Great idea on the collar! I have been thinking about what to do with the other pack. Thinking about making a quick access top pocket similar to the PLCE bags. Cheers
I absolutely love the ALICE frame. The whole system really, I've been running a Hellcat for a few years now, and have an FILBE main bag for the winter. I would like to modify my alice with PALS and a few other things. But then I though, why not just make a whole new improved ALICE?
Great additions Jess to Alice and matches really nice too. Perhaps some molle covering each side for addition pouches when plusing up is needed. I pit together a hellcat a bunch of years ago and used it a bunch. Then I found the Swedish LK35, put some molle on it, new frame and haven't looked back. Nate
Added ILBE lid (after-market) to my Medium Alice w/o removing the original Alice lid. Speedy Sticher and #36 bankline for thread in the ILBE lid's two corners. Also added paracord through the eyelets on the Alice upper molly straps to help cinch down hatchet or other gear in the pass through pockets. I also added compression straps like you. Rock solid like you said no flopping around and reduced noise from the fabric rubbing against each other. I noticed you favor the waist belt upside-down, is that to get your torso length to fit you" Oh, one more thing I had not cut off the original straps for the two buckles on the zipper side of the after-market ILBE lid when I sewed it on. When go up a grade it helped to pull on both of them to position the Alice better on my back for the climb. Also added a sleep carrier to the frame under the Alice for MSS and trap/hammock/ bug net. I too am thinking about putting buckles on the pockets and the two main lid straps.
Nice Jess, I've recently taken a Filbe Frame with an Australian Tas Tactical shoulders and kidney belt and installed it into my large Alice. I have found myself being 6 foot 1 that weight is difficult with my back so I've chosen not to mod the top pouches of Alice at this stage. I've heard about opening them up but I felt that might be more like the Austrian Alice Pack which I've got one of those as well. Also I've recently purchased a medium Alice for my son and created my own PVC piping frame for him that is light and sit well on him back. I would like to try in the future the pouch attachment ideas that you have down on your Alice Pack but have to learn better how to sew. Cool Video. Drew.
I bet you had a lot of fun making that. The modifications and adjustments definitely keep your gear well organized with easy access, fantastic. I'm sure you'll be happy with that. I went ahead and subscribed. You seem like a well grounded person and many can learn from your calm demeanor. Anyway, lookin forward to your following videos.
Awesome work. I've used the speedy stitcher on my east German pack modifying it. Worked great. I do like what you have done with the Alice. Malice packs are nice, but Woo Wee they are very expensive. Great work👍💯
Gotta love the ALICE pack. Great mods. Im sure you know but you can dye that waist belt with apple green rit dye and a splash of brown to give it a green color.
I've popped a bunch of rivets on Alice packs over the years, since the 90s, I found that if I put some fiber weld or fiberfix tape on the rivet points then they become really strong without adding any weight
Another cool addition is a snow/dust skirt to the ALICE pack. You can butcher it from the Austrian Army ALICE style back pack. So you´re able to load your pack up higher and tightened with your in the video shown compression strap over the lower pouches. So the profile becomes more high and slim, not like ALICE usually does - low and wide. Cheers Torsten
I’d say D rings (2 per strap) for the flexibility and wider tie down points for a solid cinch down. Maybe inside a barred slider buckle so they stay where you put them sliding them on the strap.
I got some frontpanels and plate side pouches from the British army for little money and when I found out that I can easily connect them, I made a rectangular Ruck out of the stuff, attached it to the ALICE frame. Never had that much MOLLE on a Ruck lol
When can I send you my old large Alice pack to do the same to ? 😅 . I ended up up grading to the ILBE large pack, but I do miss the old Allice. It is in storage.

Thanks brother, I think it’s around 40ish with water. Picked up a 64oz bottle in addition to the 32oz I have carried.

How did you attach the MOLLE kidney pad securely?
Through the same slots the regular ALICE pad goes through. Both webbing straps run through it on both sides. The tabs that the straps run through are folded inward.
↟↟Hey Jess🙌🏻
What is the maximum weight you can carry without back fatigue?🤔
Hey Alex! Not really sure, but a pretty good load. 60lbs is comfortable, but could go more if needed.
I train with kettlebells and they have helped tremendously. The past few months all I have been doing with them is clean & press and squats. A few swings here and there, but thats about it. What I have found is, that it allows me to be ready to carry my pack (without carrying my pack regularly).
