  • One of the biggest hurdles in living #Vanlife is figuring out how to work from a van. Peter Holcombe has been working from a Winnebago Sprinter van for the last 9 years while traveling full-time. It’s been a dream come true, but it certainly has had some challenges to overcome to get the position he is in now with his current 2022/23 workstation customer designed to support his work as a professional photographer/videographer. This small nook in his van is transformed into an efficient office on he arrives on location. Peter will walk you through this system, including a hidden 27” Apple Studio display.

    For those wanting to skip the intro, he starts talking about the actual workstation at 4:50. Ahhh, seeing him sit down at the end actually working with everything set up looks amazing! I've gotta do something like this. Regarding the rack, I was going to recommend the cookie cooling racks. I've used a large, heavy duty one for years to raise my big 17" Macbook Pro up off the desk for better ventilation. I LOVE that monitor mount. I've been trying to figure out a good workstation setup for over a year. I'm so spoiled with my setup at home and honestly this has been the biggest hurdle to getting van life about perfect. Forever, I was going to have a dedicated workspace but I've about decided to go with a shorter Promaster and just use my dinette as you're doing and then just have a way to store everything away but still be easy to setup. I saw another video on Cheap RV Living where Bob interviewed Milo on his Transit Connect and he had a great setup as well.

    This was extremely helpful and insightful, Peter. I’m in the same situation and not a lot of other RUclipsrs discuss their workstations in such detail, so I really appreciate you sharing your setup and suggestions and experience. When you make your living on the interwebs and you’re older than 30, then lying in bed with your laptop on your, well lap, doesn’t cut it anymore. 😆

    Awesome setup Peter! Really love that you’re using a Studio Display. I’m building my own 2022 4x4 Sprinter, and am planning to do a very similar setup, but I plan to swivel the drivers seat around and use the same monitor that will be permanently mounted to a wardrobe directly behind the drivers seat. I’ll use a Lagun table as the mount for the keyboard/mouse. Wish I had enough room for my Pro Display XDR as I love that size, it’s just too much for the van and I like the built in camera/speakers/mic of the Studio display. Great work on the setup!

    Hi!
    Friendly feedback:
    You’d be surprised that much much more can be done.
    It will take a little time, a few videos, and products to look at, and an ability to reimagine the space you are in.
    I promise you, you can get the space you left behind back and quite nicely so.
    If you would like some tips, I am happy to offer some recommendation. :)

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  4 месяца назад +1

      Hello, Before this system I had a desk system for the front passengers side. It was a hanging desk that when up onto the dashboard. It worked pretty well but I find that using the bench gives more room and better access to the cabinet above for all the peripherals. It also allows the use of the 27in Studio Display.
      I thought about the drivers side but the space the steering wheel takes up real limited my desk space. Thats why I did the passengers side.

    Great work station you have there, well organized. Have a few question about scheelmann seats. 1)do you have that seats model#. 2) how did you transfer the sensors from original mercedes seat ?( I believe those are air bag sensors) 3) did the seat have to be mounted little offset so the arm rest fits between seat and the door? I looked my mercedes seats and there is very little space there , that arm rest may be rubbing by the doors if there was arm rest installed . Thank you for sharing

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey, thanks! They are the Vario F XL. There are instructions for transferring over the sensor for the passengers side seat. It's a little tricky but I did it myself. The seats fit great wit the arm rests. They are right there but fit fine. No rubbing. These seats are 1000% better than stock. Once you try them you will be disappointed with anything else.

    Curious how you are charging those batteries without having solar panels on the roof. Are you just using the alternator? Do you have portable solar panels? Maybe you have a video on this that I haven’t seen yet but if you have some answers, let me know.

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  10 месяцев назад

      Hello and thanks for watching. I have a secondary 250 Amp alternator that's only task is to charge the batteries. It charges at around 3000 watts. We drive nearly every day and with this system we never think about power unless we use all our electronics and sit for 3-4 days. We can even run our AC for about 10 hours from this system. But, we do carry a small Zamp Solar portable panel to give back a little bit when we are parked for days on end. It helps some too. I love solar but with my kayaks and Starlink on the roof I just ran out of roof space. If I didn't have those I'd max out my solar too.

    Hey Peter. We are picking our Revel up soon and have really enjoyed all the videos. Was curious if you needed to insulate underneath the Studio Display storage or not. We are looking at possibly trying to stuff a Samsung M8 down there like you have the Studio Display. Looking at the dimensions for both and comparing with what it looks like in the video, we think it could fit. We won't know until we get the van and measure the area. Thanks!

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Год назад +1

      Hello, Thanks for watching and I'm super excited you're getting your Revel soon. My monitor sits face up on a 1/4" of closed cell foam. It then has a 1" thick piece of closed cell foam that makes the border that is laser cut to fit the display. It's a tight fit and really keeps the display from moving around at all. I made a cardboard cutout of the display before getting it and tried all sorts of locations in the Revel. But I quickly realized that under the bench was going to work the best for me. It's done just that for the last 7 months. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope to see you out there in your Revel some time in the near future.

      Hi Syed, I bought a sheet of foam from an industrial foam supplier. Then a friend had laser cutter access at a makers space. The foam was a little thick for the laser, but it ended up working great. Many of the foam suppliers can cut the foam too.

    I am wanting to full time in a Revel. Did you permanently mount the StarLink on the roof? Wondering how well it works without being able to move to find the signal? Also, I would like to boondock indefinitely. You addressed increasing the power, but what about the water? If I remember correctly, the Revels have 24 gallon water storage tank.

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Год назад +1

      The starlink is on the roof with magnets. So I can pull it down if needed. But I've only done that a fee times. You do need a clear view of the sky for optimum performance.
      As for water, we can do 5-7 days with two people. Longer if your not washing dishes, less if your showering. We do need to dimp our toilet every 2-3 days.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Месяц назад

      This is a great question and thye both have their pros and cons. We like the comforts of a van, hard walls, great insulation, security, the size has been great for international travel too. Sprinters are also used around the world. So getting service where we are in Panama is easy. Some US trucks arent sold globaly so that makes getting service and parts a little more difficult. But with that said, I have owned Toyota trucks in the past and loved them. With the right camper they can check all the boxes too.

    • @Famagogo

      Hey The Bolt is great. At one point we did consider it. But it wasn't the best floor plan for our needs and being on the longer Sprinter 3500 170" chases, it's limited where you can take it offroad. It's funny you mentioned the black tank. We are very happy with our cassette toilet and wouldn't ever go back to a traditional black tank. It's so much easier to dump in so many more places. And traveling internationally there aren't US style dump stations. So the cassette wins for the type of travel we like to do. Thanks for watching!

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  2 месяца назад +1

      The only reason is the floor in the back is raised and the table hight is too high also. I did this on our first Revel using the passenger side front seat. In this build it was best to just use the bench seat. It is nice getting out of the drivers seat after a long day and having a little wider space to work in too. I think the best scenario would be to add a 3rd Scheel-Mann seat in the back where the bench is and have it set to the proper height to work with the table.
