Absolutely. Having had several in my family, one of whom went totally blind rather than go to the doc, another risking death because 'they are right', they will absolutely end themselves and those around them instead of admitting they are wrong and giving up control. They are the villains in alot of the classic disaster movies and fairytales, to be honest.

@@-_YouMayFind_- I think him explaining the cracking sound they heard was definitely painful to relive. When told that Rush would be taking over as pilot, the proper question to ask was whether Stockton was running a professional operation or whether he was using customer money to run his own adventure club. While it's a good thing that David was aboard, the discussion back on the surface ship should have been enough to cause the entire staff to quit. This is NOT how professionals behave.
Honestly i predicted about halfway theough that the only way he was gonna give up the controller was if one of the passengers demanded he do so. As a ceo it’s completely unprofessional to argue with your officers who are *in charge of this stuff*. Being the ceo, he needs to understand that this is NOT his sub when they’re underwater, but instead its the guy who’s hired to pilot the ship safely. This is true about normal boats; it should be especially true for something as dangerous as a sub. If nothing else, at least now he can’t put any more lives at risk for the sake of his own ego.

This man is fortunate he didn't go down in the Titan. He had the foresight that Stockton ignored. Arrogance was a HUGE factor in the demise of Stockton and 4 innocent people. If you cut corners on any cake, it will collapse. It's as simple as that.
Truly...only a narc would ever do this. If a normal person got a sub stuck near a wreck, they'd be thankful and relieved that their experienced Director was willing to take the helm and help rectify the situation. He/she would probably then go by the acrylic lookout and give a full scope out report to help the Director. Like it's not a competition; it's time for MAJOR team work and using all available expertise and problem solving tactics.
I know the feeling. I've had employers (idiotic employers) like that too. That type of person should not be managing anything, much less a company that's doing something as risky as making submersibles and bringing people to the bottom of the ocean.
Stockton was a lunatic. To be this careless with your own life is one thing. To gleefully risk other human lives for your own glory, repeatedly and despite years of warning, over and over. That's some kind of insanity.
shit was probably already hitting the fan when he send out the "all good" and also probably ignoring all the transmission from the mothership because he was in panic mode
It's really nice to finally hear from Lochridge. This situation seems to be so much worse than anyone realised. Also OSHA need to be held accountable for failing to act on Lochridge's concerns and failing to prevent these deaths.
While we should remember that we won't get to hear Stockton's side of this story, it's hard to imagine a worse condemnation of a guy who was claiming to run a professional submersible operation. Not only is this behavior dangerous and unprofessional, but it's downright childish and pathetic; it shows us that he needed professional therapy :(. "I'm the boss" is a downright *stupid* thing to say when you're selling seats on a ocean or space ship and his absolute shutdown when the situation degraded proved that he should *never* have been allowed to control any vehicle with other lives aboard; I wouldn't even want him aboard as a passenger. The guy throwing a temper tantrum in a sub he has single-handedly wrecked is the same guy that would stand before the media and potential customers and claim that he was running a professional operation. He was a liar. If Elon ever says "I'm the boss" in regards to his rockets then you'll know that his company is done for; the founders and creators can so easily become the destroyers if they allow their egos to take over. I feel bad for Stockton's friends and family who have to see this, but the person being described here was *incapable* of running an operation where lives were at risk and some of them probably knew this to be true. I mean no offense, but this man needed help and the flaws exposed in these hearings would ultimately take more lives than just his own :(.
I highly doubt Stockton had actual friends, and most of his family is probably secretly and silently relieved that they don't have to tiptoe around his insanity anymore.
Well done to this man for standing up to the big ego of the CEO (RIP to all those who perished at sea), but people need to be held accountable. Of course no one expects a Scotsman to take a step back. Well done again.
Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes realness. Hubris and arrogance. It is weird he was allowed to do any of this. Robust government over-site exists for a reason
It's literally uncharted waters. He was outside US jurisdiction for a reason. To cut as many corners as possible. No regulations. Maximum profit for minimal efforts.
Stockton had a B.S.E. in mechanical and aerospace engineering worked on the F-15 program in aerospace, with absolutely no experience and qualification for deep dive submersibles. His company did produce some successful shallow dive vehicles. However, it was reported that he was informed by engineers who design deep dive submersibles that carbon fiber was inadequate material as it weakens with repeat compression. It appears from watching his interviews, and this incident his narcissism, omniscient and arrogance eventually killed him, and tragically he took four people with him.
This isn't that widely known, but Rush copied the design for his submersible from a US Navy experimental project. They actually did build a carbon fiber submersible with the same sort of glued on end pieces and made a pretty large number of dives deeper than the Titanic. But it wasn't manned, and the Navy abandoned the project concluding that carbon fiber was simply not a good material for such uses. I think Rush figured that he could make it work and only looked at the advantages while ignoring the obvious concerns. It's a bit unfair when people claim he just came up with the idea out of thin air. The Navy had proved it could be done. But his personal behavior was just unacceptable in such a high risk environment. I don't know if it was ego, emotional immaturity, or stress, but he had no business in the pilot's seat. His entire decision-making process was deeply flawed it seems.
I'd go back and check his work on the F15's ... what part exactly did he design? Likely to be some issues ... that sort of poor engineering mindset doesn't just happen overnight.
it's horrifying to realize that this self-centerred know-it-all arrogance is a common personality trait among the wealthy, and that they don't have to take us down to the crushing depths of the ocean to put all our lives in danger with their arrogance.
God is not Jesus, God is the father, mother, alpha and omega, beginning and end, Jesus could possibly his son, in some religions they believe that. It is all about believing, we only know that Jesus has lived, if he was the son of an imaginary god or whatever, he impressed a lot of people, were used from others to teach obedience and says a lot of good but not more needed words after more than 2000 years we wouldn’t even know if Jesus stands in front of us and if we would say this, we would be quickly in a mental hospital.
It's really improtant to work on this case. It has so many room for learning. So big thumbs up to the authoritites (Coast Guards, US Navi, everyone,, who are working on this). These hearings do a good job, I believe. There were great questions showing, that they're heading for solutions in the future. Very professional. Gteets from Germany 👍🙋
Stockton was a sociopath. He didn't want to contact topside because then word would get out they got stuck and whatever. That wouldn't benefit Stockton's future plans for more missions and getting the passengers money.
David Lochridges testimony is Gold.. Factual with great insight.. enlightening.. and extremely educational.. This guy is A REAL SPECIALIST… Not some over indulgent thril seeker with more money than sense.. Stockton’s disrespect, disregard & complete lack of willing to listen to decent advice & act upon it was unreal.. Throwing a girly paddy hissy fit when he got his submersible & crew stuck on The Andrea Doria wreck was crazy.. Your stuck underwater & all the “Chief” wants to do is dull.. panic & show no professionalism whatsoever.. David saved them all that day.. That should’ve been a major red flag to all concerned at Oceangate..
Mr. Lochridge is right. When one of the Mir submersibles was stuck under one of the Titanic's propellers, the pilot worked the problem through and got the submersible out of trouble.
Stockton, a child in a grown man’s body in a constant state of midlife crisis. No amount of regulation would have stopped Rush from ending up on the bottom of the ocean, he would’ve bribed and dodged every person that would’ve stopped him.
What an ego. Basically couldn’t handle that not only did he get himself and everyone on board into a life threatening situation and that someone other than himself had to navigate out of it.
Just an easy reminder that’s it’s easier to blame the dead for mistakes, to palm the blame onto one. Stockton was arrogant yes, but, a lot of people allowed him to do this, it may have been the next person to say NO… and Stockton and the crew of that submarine may still be alive
“I mean, if you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed. Don’t get in your car. Don’t do anything. At some point, you’re going to take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question. I think I can do this just as safely by breaking the rules" - Stockton Rush

It's almost like being rich doesn't automatically make you qualified, and billionaires are generally just egotists who got lucky at the casino and thinks that makes them smart. Maybe we should stop fucking venerating them. The fact Stockton rush was literally a wannabe Elon Musk who got into Ocean Tourism because he missed the boat (har har) on Space Tourism should really tell you everything you need to know. I am not, in any way, surprised by this story. To engage in a bit of ghoulish speculation - it's entirely possible that the Titan Submersible didn't experience a failure that was immediately catastrophic. It seems possible, if not likely, that the sub experienced some kind of fault that could have been fixed by surfacing or backing off, but Rush himself refused to do that and/or panicked, getting everyone killed. Moral of the story is don't put narcissistic rich people in charge of your life and safety on the assumption that they're smart.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 this video is literally from an investigation about a rich dude who got everyone killed because he thought being rich meant he was unqualified but hey man, good for you doing your utmost to learn fucking nothing.
The only good thing to come from this fiasco is that Stockton was one of the passengers. What an object lesson, but unfortunately the people who should learn from this are the ones unable to do so.
The Rush Stockton story is a prime example of what happens when someone is obsessed with something so much so that he is willing to risk the lives of others in the process and has enough money to do so. He wanted to be the first to Mars and capitalize on that, then Elon Musk decided that he wanted to be the first. So, since Rush could not match Musk's treasure chest he settled for being the first to deep-sea underwater attraction. In the end he was the first to die by the Titanic wreck since it sank and he was possibly the first one to ever die on a deep-sea exploration dive in human history. (The Nautilus was not a deep-sea exploration mission) Let that sink in. (No pun intended)
Interesting that he was panicking about “what if” possibilities while actively trying to keep the controls away from someone who could help. I would love to hear someone knowledgeable analyze that behavior.
Bosses, big and small, should understand the fact that treating their employees like crap only builds a long list of witnesses that will string them up when the time comes. Treat people right.

He is just showing frustration not PTSD 😂
@@-_YouMayFind_- I think him explaining the cracking sound they heard was definitely painful to relive. Imagine being in a serious situation under thousands of pounds of water pressure, hearing a cracking sound in your submersible, and believing you might die because of your boss's actions.
Yes it's his ego. But a lot of CEOs are actually like this, they just didn't listen until it's too late, the business went bankrupt.

yup, unearned arrogance
what a mess! it's kind of easy to say now, but I would have given up long before the CEO went diving into the wreckage of the Titanic

You forgot greed. Many testimonials of him being incredibly greedy. Cutting corners to maximize profits.
And just because you have a college degree and work experience doesn't mean you are competent, unless you are also a narcissist.

To engage in a bit of ghoulish speculation - it's entirely possible that the Titan Submersible didn't experience a failure that was immediately catastrophic.
