Ottu Shavige - ಒತ್ತು ಶಾವಿಗೆ - Rice Noodles - Traditional Mangalorean Recipe - Home Chefs Cooking
Ottu Shavige which is nothing but rice noodles prepared in a traditional way in Karnataka. In most of the region in south India this shavige is prepared from rice flour which is called as Idiyappam in Kerala. Whereas mangalore style shavige is prepared by grinding the soaked rice and grated coconut. Personally I have tried both the recipes and I like Mangalore style shavige more than the kerala style idiyappam. Traditionally this rice noodles are served with mangalore style chicken curry or sweetened coconut milk or with any spicy veg gravies. Some even like eating with spicy pickles topped with coconut oil.
This dish is mainly served as breakfast and some also like it for lunch. In coastal Karnataka Brahmin communities prepare this dish along with sweetened coconut milk on the occasion of Noola Hunnime/Upakarma.

Coconut will give extra softness to shyavige.... You can skip it if you doesn't like to include.
