I love MFJJ's rifle content! I know this is an archery channel. But I look forward to rifle discussion here like I look forward to archery on Vortex Nation. It's just a wonderful change of pace from time to time. Keep it coming
Been loading and building rifles for over 20 years. And yes, picking up a bow this year after 14 years was awesome. The fine detail and attention to every aspect of the equipment from the cases to the powder the bullet weight, tuning the charge, finding your pressure node.... all that stuff is so similar to all the attention archery gear requires to get top results, archery is a tinkerers dream for certain!
Speaking of Trumps buildings. I was the finisher (stain & clear coater of the bubinga African rose wood) for the 3rd floor restaurant in Trump Towers Chicago. Shameless plug 😎
One point about the electric car braking. Tesla’s don’t use there brakes that often, mostly only in a complete stop, or an emergency stop. They typically use regenerative braking, which is taking the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle to charge the car rather than waste the energy in heat to provide a friction force on the brake pads to the rotors to slow down. So there for I believe electric cars use less brake pads to slow down rather than combustion vehicles.
Another awesome Epi as always boys. Love how you touched on cold weather hunting. As a Minnesota guy one interesting gear issue I’ve ran into is nock fit on really cold arrows. I’m running Easton 6.5 Hunter classics with lumenocks and noticed when it’s around 30 or colder that my nocks will have loose fitment. When I build new batches of arrows I have to freeze everything before checking nock fit.
The 1K is a thinner tighter weave. The “K” is thousands of strands per war or bundle. So 1K has 1,000 strands of carbon in each thread. 1.5K has more strands which increases the about of strand overlap which increases the “Velcro” factor of the layers. So while 1K is the “tighter” weave, the 1.5K would attach to the uni beneath it better. So it would be stronger. But we are talking very insignificant differences.
I am excited to do the numbers on this arrow. I am a short draw 400 spine guy so getting gpi has been difficult. I have had good luck with the rip, so this should be excellent.
Range finders will measure the hypotenuse and estimate the longer leg. But that difference really doesn't mean much ultimately. However with bullets and arrows the trajectory is not symmetrical. At a far enough range, 0° and almost 5° downhill have almost zero change in point of impact, but 5° uphill will need an adjustment.
When hunting season is over, indoor target begins. Heck I've been pounding paper the whole hunting season as it is. For me personally, the target bow gets shot year round. Its great when hunting season rolls around because I don't need to practice. Just grab the hunting bow and make sure its dialed and off we go with confidence in my shot.
As someone that was running around with a .300 WinMag this season I feel your pain with wanting something lighter. I am looking at building out a .280 AI for a lighter option.
Elk are typically half half and half, 800lb bull will hang 400lbs and finished will be 200. IW vanes will probably be twice as much as everybody else’s 😂, Arrow spine plays a huge role in penetration almost more than the head you choose
First thing a WT hunter should do (if he’s a mobile hunter) is check all of his climbing gear to make sure none of the straps are rotted and everything is kopasetic with his/her harness. Being alive is important.
Great pod as always, but Tim we have a problem. We listen to the podcast in the office at work and have a running weekly bet on how many Tip-To-Tip or equivalent remarks (Knock-To-Knock, etc) happen in each episode and you’ve been letting us down hard core 😂 #maketheofficebetgreatagain
My cousin shoots 50 caliber long range tournaments all over the country. Hand loads his own bullets. The whole gun was built pice by piece. It’s quite a pice of shooting equipment. Still never understand shooting an animal at 500 600 800 yds what the thrill is. If I can’t see the animals eyes with mine I don’t shoot. Been shooting a bow 62 years it’s the only way for me but each to there own.
3 rivers archery just released a carbon arrow called the obsidian. It features a 3k carbon fiber weave. Supposedly it's a tuff muther ... Idk who makes their arrows???
@2975lift I have never tried looking into it. I have some 3 rivers traditional only shafts I shoot squirrels and stump shoot with. Never had one break. 50# recurve
@@Electrazeek94 I'm not sure who makes that arrow you're talking about I do know the traditional only stuff is Easton with that new arrow you're talking about being a 3k weave makes me think maybe victory made it
@@Matt_hasshots No, but many companies are buying carbon from the same sources. Easton gets carbon fiber from CA (Mitsubishi Chemical America and Washington state), Aluminum from Iowa. They are manufactured in the US ... Victory arrows are manufactured in places like Vietnam and Mexico. That doesn't make them bad, but I'd rather support American workers and manufacturing.
EV brake pads actually last much longer, regenerative (electrical) braking is doing the lionshare of the work so the actual mechanical brakes are used only a fraction of the time. People are getting 70-100k miles from a single set of pads. Apples to apples, a modern EV will use less brake pads than an ICE vehicle simply because with an EV you don't actually use the mechanical brakes all that much, most of the stopping is done with the electric motor and the energy is recaptured back into the battery instead of grinding brake pads down.
The Victory aluminum 204 inserts that come with the XV are complete junk. They should just stick with the steel ones. The aluminum ones just snap off in animals. Had to stop using the XV and just use the regular RIP. Sick of snapping shafts and snapping inserts.

1k weave is tighter than 1.5k weave. But, the new 1.5k weave is twice as fine as the 3k weave of the TKI series. There is a potential trade off in a tighter weave with increase brittleness, therefore, affecting shear strength while improving strength in compression. Since arrows experience greater compression due to longitudinal force application at impact, the trade off is acceptable. I ordered some gamers to try, can’t wait to tinker!
I noticed the VAP SS 4mm i have are also 3k carbon weave which i never even realized before. Not sure what the benefit is besides less torque and tighter tolerances as far as less reaction out of the bow?
EVs use regenerative braking, which pretty much removes the need to use your brakes. This is called "single pedal driving." So the comment that EVs use more brakes which leads to more pollution is definitely incorrect. Now does mining for lithium cause excessive amounts of pollution compared to ICE vehicles, probably...
