- Rhoda and Joe work very hard at being the perfect modern couple, free of all jealousies and hang-ups until a man Rhoda once loved asks her out for dinner.
Air Date: January 20, 1975 Развлечения
I like Joe and Brenda's relationship. Good sister and brother in law together. Joe is always supportive of her.
Sherry, I agree. He was always very kind to Brenda. He was a good and supportive in-law, even during the girls' shenanigans.
@@carmenowens3375 He knew her before Rhoda. She was Donnys babysitter. Brenda introduced them
Valerie Harper was such a good actress; Introducing the alter ego “Delores” was loads of fun.
I really really miss watching these old shows a whole whole lot
Ok,ok, we get it
Thankfully they are here any time we want them ! 😊
I laughed so hard at Carlton the doorman at the end. Don't want to spoil it for anybody but that was 😂 hilarious!
This is the best haircut and color for Rhoda
Molli, I agree. I think she's at her prettiest in this episode.
They were both so gorgeous. Love you Valerie RIP💔
Black was her colour.
Jjjjjn
At 11:49 when Rhoda is on the intercom with Carlton you can see the “etc” sign on the wall behind her. I had the same sign in my kitchen in the 70’s.
I wish they made shows like this again. Instead they have 3 or 4 good ones and the rest are becoming stranger and stranger.
I miss the fashions from those days.
One of my favorite shows! Loved Rhoda and had a crush on her sister.😁❤❤❤
Valerie Harper was so beautiful at this time of her life. She looked fabulous in that black dress.
Valerie always looked fabulous in black. You are correct. Valerie could wear almost anything.
I feel the same! She looks great in black!
Isn't it dark blue?
She was during this time. Stunning
She’s also such a collaborative actress. You can feel that from her partnership w MTM to Kavner and Groh. That’s priceless!
This episode showed how much Rhoda and Joe loved and trusted each other. It was sweet and you could feel the serenity between them, especially at the ending when the music starts to play.
One of the most brilliant TV shows ever written and acted!!
It aged better than the MTM show as well
Rhoda playing Doleras brings out the sultry vixen in her. Val really was an incredible gorgeous girl with such spirit. I feel she would have been a terrific friend. What a great loss to the world.
These are so nicely done, thank you. Wonderful to be able to see the series again. Um...does anyone else think that Brenda (Julie Kavner) quietly steals the show?
Carol Clarke www
Brenda does steal the show in quite a few episodes. Julie was great here, and also as Marge Simpson.
Carol Clarke Yes, I agree with you about Julie Kavner. With very few exceptions, I enjoyed her scenes on Rhoda. She & Nancy Walker were my favorites on this show.
Except for their dapper and charming father!
I miss the 70s
Auckland New Zealand. wow, thats where I live. You never heard it mentioned on TV back in the day. What a lovely little surprise.
It's so crazy. I can't think of any other film relationship that made as great an impact in my soul than Joe and Rhoda and the writers did a great injustice to this show when they broke up😔💔
Guessing they may have had her divorced , thinking it's easier to write when she's single. Maybe they felt ideas were drying up.
Brought bad characters in , pretty ridiculous & over the top ones.
The show was slowly dying & writing got bad after " Joe " left.
Thanks for posting...one of my favorites!
David Bloom is adorable. Successful, funny, humble, and sweet. I would marry him!!
The yellow dutch oven that Ida made pot roast in the episode "Ida the Elf" is on the shelf in the background!
Valerie Looks HOT in this episode; love the bob!!!
We called that a pageboy back in the seventies.
She's so gorgeous!
Both Valerie and Julie were so good at the accents I’m wondering if they were originally from New York.
Julie Kavner grew up in Los Angeles. Valerie Harper grew up just north of NYC.
Valerie grew up in Suffren, New York. Not in the city though. Kavner no
And all the rest of them don't even have an accent 😅
I'm not sure why people think this was a date. It was a reunion. Joe sees his ex every time he picks up and drops off Donny. He and she were married and had a child. Rhoda and her ex bf only dated. She didn't hide it from Joe. She did nothing wrong.
up to a point. But she crossed the line with that outfit! Damn, she looked hot!
It was a date: an appointment to meet at a specified time; a social engagement between two persons that often (but not only) has a romantic character. ~Webster’s Dictionary ~
Picking up and dropping your child at an exes is one thing. Meeting an ex dressed like a million dollars is wrong.
Hmmm.. foreshadowing when she says if we ever get divorced...
This is as much a comment on the comments here as on the episode. I assume we're watching this to remind us of our youth; I was 15 when this first went out in 1975. As the description says, "Rhoda and Joe work very hard at being the perfect modern couple, free of all jealousies and hang-ups". Now, at 15 I didn't know much about relationships or marriage, but I did pick up on the progressive idea that a modern couple shouldn't be square, possessive or restrictive on each other's freedom. Ideas like polyamory were big in the 70s (not that Rhoda is doing anything like that here). When I read comments in semi-Biblical language saying "Rhoda should not have done this" I just note how far American society has swung right, attitudinally. Or is it that people who watch this are now old, and got more conservative in their views? Or both? People who say the episode would be short if Rhoda had done "the right thing" are correct too, of course: yes, this is a situation comedy and when you write these you have to invent situations, sometimes at odds with character: think of when Rhoda blabbed to Lou about Mary Richards having lied about her college degree on her CV. I disagree with those who say the writing here is bad -- the scene with Rhoda enacting the conversation with her inner Dolores, for instance, is great writing. Later in the series bad writing appeared, with absurd Lotharios and air hostesses barging into the divorced Rhoda's apartment and increasingly random plots. And let me just say that I think the dress at the end is fantastic in a very 1970s way... or do I mean "terrific"?
Im with you! There are three things that make a marriage work... Trust, communication and sex (being the same speed with each other) and Thats what this show was about. Religious people cheat. Honest people go on platonic dates with their exes...
The changes in the show led to its downfall.
You know when you meet your long lost pal and you want to bust out in a laugh like you used to when you're back when you were young that is what happened to the rhoda and her friend. That friend you can just be yourself around.
Joe should have said "hell te da nall!!"
He had an Afro but that doesn't mean he knew Ebonics.
That Allen Garfield...there's something about that guy.
Favorite Al Garfield performance; "Kurr" from "The Black Stallion Returns" (1983)
"WAIT! I want to make a DEAL! A DEAL!"
Mary Tyler Moore show as well, they say "terrific" a lot!
We say "amazing" now all the time.
Geez that auburn hair was quite the trend in the 70's. Myrna, Joe's secretary, Ida, Marilu Henner from Taxi AND my mother. Wow.🙄
People in the comments on other videos have mentioned that Joe had a bunch of "red flag" behavior, but the truth is Rhoda came into the marriage with unfinished business and baggage too.
That is one of the reasons I love the character. She's imperfect and that made her more real.
13:54 the great Allen Garfield in a rare television appearance. I guess he found time in between takes of Nashville, The Conversation, Mother Jugs And Speed etc. to take a t.v. part.
They say "terrific" a lot
virginia carnovale One of the most over-used descriptors of the 70s: watch any series from that decade and you'll hear it said frequently. People even used it sarcastically or when they were unhappy. Terrific became one of those cultural catch-all's.
I love that word...it's terrific! :)
Now "amazing" is said a lot.
Beats Awesome!
If I were Joe, I'd have been pissed about this whole thing...
It was wrong of her to make a date with him. If she just had to see him, she should have brought Joe along not Brenda.
I agree.
Me too
Oh please...
Agree. She was also wrong when she told Joe to marry her instead of just live together like he wanted. He wanted to get to know her not marry her. He didn't get the chance to ask her which is his role and all men's roles. In the wedding episode notice the mishaps that happen: she is not picked up by her friend and she ends up taking the subway to the church. The other one is when Joe first meets Mary. He's angry and doesn't acknowledge her and the result is very embarrassing. When things like this happen in the show and in real life they are SIGNS. The writers knew before she married that she'd be getting a divorce. It was planned that way. The public got angry and stopped watching but they really shouldn't have been surprised.
At least she took someone else, but I agree, she shouldn't have agreed to go out with him.
They did the exact same premise on The Mary Tyler Moore Show with Mary and Joe (Ted Bessel).
This episode make the Judge look so "sick"" by saying...."she is so young i cannot say how old she is...." - they make him seem like a sick person....
In those days it was acceptable to say and brag that. Sick, I know.
Relax. I'm sure she was older than 18 and out of high school
Joe's secretary appeared in the first pilot for all in the family. Circa 1968.her name is Candice Azzara
I love Candice Azzara!
"Mrs Cappuletti" in Rodney Dangerfield's "Easy Money" (1983)
And "Lydia" in Dom DeLuise's "Fatso" (1980)
I saw her only one other movie also from the 80's where she took of weight and changed her hair to play a cheerleader's coach or something... and although the movie was horrible, she looked FABULOUS!
This bloom guys worth ten of joe
Joe was such a hunk. Why would Rhoda leave him at home to go on a date with this guy? Reminds me of the time Ida was having an emotional affair with her doctor (played by Norman Fell/Mr. Roper) while all the time she had a way more handsome husband waiting for her at home. Rhoda & her mom were weird. (And yes, I know it's wrong to date other people regardless of whether they're more or less attractive than your spouse.)
Why be together if there isn't any trust?
Alice is Annie's mother on Caroline in the City. Lea Thompson reminds me of Valerie Harper.
For once Joe is the insecure one.
Joe is so good to Brenda
Joe reminds me of Vince Vaughn
Valerie H in that black dress: the birth of goth in the USA.
I was hoping at the end Joe and the judge would have met.
I wish they would have kept Joe. I hate that they got divorced! They were so good together and Rhoda waited so long for a decent guy!!
I guess they did. We just didn’t see it! Lol
Great Episode !!!
I ran into a guy I went with once (I was married), and he asked me out. I refused, of course. Married people just don't do things like that if they value the marriage, even if it's just dinner. Rhoda should have refused.
Ok it's just a show people you know with writers and actors how funny.
Janet Griffiths Rhoda was so insecure about her marriage in many episodes but yet she does stuff that makes her her own worst enemy. For example, in this episode, she selfishly chooses to see her ex although she's a married woman. Another example is when in another episode, she makes plans to have a night with her friends although Joe protests that it's on a night they had planned to be alone together. She's not a bad wife but there are times she does stuff that makes it seem her marriage is not that important to her.
that would have been a short episode!
I think the writers were working with pretty typical 70s themes; women breaking away from traditional roles, the sexual revolution (though not sure yet which side won that!), and therefore having Rhoda constantly testing her boundaries.
I think there needs to be trust in a marriage. If you can't trust your mate to have a meal and a conversation with someone of the opposite sex, you don't have much of a bond. A meeting shouldn't ruin a marriage.
working out in jeans?? really?? LOL
No married woman should meet an ex alone. Either with Joe or don’t meet.
When will they release the series on DVD? I can't find it anywhere.
+Warp Prime 42 It was released a long time ago. I have all seasons on DVD. Try HMV or Shout Factory online if you haven't already
thanks
It was a stupid premise to have Rhoda date an old flame. It was out of character for Ida to even pass on the message. It was idiotic for Joe to allow it. And what wife walks in the door and says she is too busy to talk to her husband, even though she and he are standing there? There are way too many things wrong with this episode for it to be enjoyable. There writers were at their worst here.
People don't own each other not when married or single and healthy couples don't dress one another either! If you think men can tell females what to do, you are very mistaken and you really should seek mental health care!
Christian Feminist what the hell kind of response is this?!! 🤦🏽♀️
@@realmaletearsaspatriarchys1351 "You really should seek mental health care"??? Couples don't dress one another? A happy couple will help each other with dressing, if called for. What is wrong with YOU??
@@gayled3059 like help with a zipper, for example. Right?
@@PuffKitty I have never ever asked my partner for help with a zipper and most likely I never will.
Damn when Rhoda walked out in that silk gown. How'd Joe not pick her up and head to the bedroom?
No way would i have agreed to the date!!!!!!
The series has not been released on DVD in Australia in Region 4.
Always thought Rhoda was way hotter than Mary.
3.5 love 7.5🌹❄️❄️❄️🌹
Classic
The New York Supreme Court is not the highest court in that state. It is simply a trial-level court/appellate court.
what is the highest court then?
I know it's a fictitious TV sitcom, but Rhoda and Joe's apartment would've been very expensive even in 1974. Doubtful that a window dresser and construction guy could've afforded it.
The rent on their apartment was only $310 a month. The episode that mentions their rent is S01/E11 entitled, "9-E is Available." Also, Joe wasn't just "a construction guy." He owned his own wrecking company.
In 2023 dollars it would equal almost $2,000. So yes it would have been expensive back then.
Poor Alice,I'm waiting for a guy too.
This episode is all wrong
Yep. On so many levels.
Why watch it then?
All shows and movies are agendas, fornication, divide and conquer, pushing alcohol and cigarettes on the nmasses. When the agendas are met, the movies and shows are going off yhecakr. The e,ites control everything, entertainment, the nedia and businesses.
Poor Alice! LOL!
Rhoda was her own worst enemy...its no wonder Joe and her split!
Maybe the writers were testing the waters for the future of Rhoda and Joe in this episode? I mean, Rhoda dating again...the "D" word :P
Rhoda series onte
Rhoda has her spunk here. So sad that she turns into a sap.
2024 Life S U C K S and the whole world is going B A N A N A S and the sky is about to fall, BUT WE ALWAYS HAVE RHODA! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
As people have already stated doesn't Joe see his ex-wife regularly? Yes to pick up his son but still....
I know this guy like the back of my hand and for the life of me I don't remember who the hell he is. Damn! Lol🤔
7:00 Does anyone think that Brenda is really typing here?
If typing means actually hitting keys, then yes. But if you mean is she typing something that makes sense, then no. 😆
It is 70 wow
men njrvana gen gwo dada
Rhoda looks like a goth wear black with black hair.
It's like the writers wanted this show to fell on purpose.
I've wondered about that.
I DONT SEE THE ATTRACTION TO DAVID...... UGGO ALTHOUGH JOE IS NO PRIZE EITHER
Rhoda was slender, but that awful striped mumu made her look fat. Why would Rhoda want to see an old school beau? She gets pissed when Joe sees his ex-wife for whatever reason, and when he once had lunch with her. I would have kept Joe and Rhoda married, and happy, had I been the writer. Rhoda needed therapy for her own issues. I had 2 full time jobs before, and had alot less hectic life than Rhoda has on this show. Rhoda is kinda boring when she acts hectic.
As for Brenda stealing the show that was the problem the writers had with Rhoda since Brenda seemed easier to write for now that Rhoda had everything she wanted. I think these are all funny shows but as the series continued to unravel the shows got less funny. Too bad.
She should've spilled the damn beans and told Joe the guy couldn't hold a candle to Joe's looks he was so gd weird and dorky. Give me a damn break. Lord Smh. Joe was hot! Lol
Yeah but after the novelty of looks wears off . .....
Rhoda is so neurotic no wonder Joe left.
The old boyfriend is darling. I prefer him. I'd much rather be married to him than Joe!!!!
Wbo was the old bf?
Is that when you heard he wa a judge 😃
@@teresamacdonald9268 He's sweet, humble, humorous, kind, good...... Joe, not so much. The muscular body, full head of hair don't mean all that much. Ginny, you are obviously also a very kind caring person, proof of the pudding, being married for 56 years. Congratulations. I just stumbled on Rhoda recently, having watched as a kid in the 70s. I didn't understand most of the content back then, it was amazing for it's time. Best wishes to you Ginny.

What's up with television these days?! In the year of 2000 progress for women so so possibly? 2000...? Where is still the classy story lines women portraying the everyday girl with style with flare? We've lost it in progress! Very sad unlike the shows of yesterday where women were still in power with strength! Muscle power! But they had a funny feminine side to them... :-) Mary Tyler Moore ... Rhoda definitely a classic not only for its time but now even shows like Charlie's Angels the original one! Empowered women with softness femininity but still allowing women to be strong and smart where are we now we are so embraced by being sexy we forgot who we are as women :-(! Can we please get back to yesterday ... :-( with family ideas family ways and the strength of funny strong women with feminine ine ideals but still remember who we are! Rhoda and Mary Tyler Moore showed women how to be classy strong intelligent funny with strong opinions of themselves but yet not cheap we should get back to this! Sexy on TV May boost the ratings of the young but what of the people with morals! That want more out of television please give me humorous TV with feminine morals and a lot of love behind the scripts! That teaches our children who they are as people!
marriage te 1st few years both smooth off the rough edges from each other , then the man stops trying to change his wife, but the wife just cant stop trying to mold her husband into something hes not and dont want to be.
As I re watch this show I realized something This show as a spinning off from MTM was sooo poorly written especially when they married off Rhoda to Joe I realized how Insecure both Rhoda and Brenda were. It is sickening and Unhealty relationship both WOMEN had with there Mother. Poor Joe having to put up with this Little girl Rhoda always Complaining and Moaning. This character was better on MTM.
Rhoda was in love with him for 3 years?! He musta aged badly or her taste really sucked?! Lol

I love Rhoda but she's a little crazy,lol
If this was a real relationship, Rhoda was a crappy wife for that. And If Joe cared much, he should have figuratively put a foot on her behind.
I agree. A person married to someone else and gets asked out by an old flame should politely refuse. I really don't think Rhoda valued her marriage. She needed a well-placed boot in the hiney.
abuse is why marriage doesn't work for most intelligent women and you sir need your ass kicked inside out for this nasty comment beta bitch!
I disagree. I think she felt very confident in her love for Joe and knew she and this guy were just good friends and wanted to see him. I do think that in some situations, this might not have been a good idea. Also, l think perhaps bringing Joe along rather than Brenda might have worked.
Rhoda nuts she marry.
I'd have left her or him lmediatley How would she like it if the shoe is in the other foot?Silly woman .
Considering Joe had to meet with his ex wife often, the shoe was on the other foot frequently. It's called being an adult, not a pig in perpetual estrus.
I think the "door man" is played by David.
Carleton was played by Larenso Music, one of the creators of the show.

These are the shows that stared entering the home and causing slowly marriages to break up. God ordained marriage as something beautiful and sacred. I'm not saying that divorce does not happened but this is someone opening the door to temptation and saying walk on in.
