Such a fun way to showcase your collection. Thanks for sharing. I probably would have just split it between lightest and heaviest at the start before doing the head to head ladder but it doesn't matter. The results don't matter 😂 They're all nice.
I didnt know Brodie is ill😢 This bike has the most soul of them. I love kona, kleins are beautiful also. Team marin speaks to me also. But Brodie is the best visually for me
That gator fade is really rare .collectors are looking for those everywhere. Don't scratch it lol it's definitely my favorite. Also the 97 s-works of course. But I like most all of those bikes. Cool video thanks old shovel
Hello from Germany! Nice video! Very cool having the bikes go 😋 2 😋. It wasn't until I entered a 43 mile (70 kilometers) joyride, that allowed only bikes manufactured in 98' or older, when I got hooked on vintage bikes. My oldest bike was a Scott Octane FX 1 purchased in 2001. After spending alot of time wondering what to do to enter this event, I found an all original, LX8spd/Tioga gripshift 96' Giant Bronco on Ebay. And purple paint! Dude, that bike is awesome! Retro bikes are so fun. But I did end up swapping the gripshifts with an 8spd LX trigger/brake combo I got from a donor bike.
I’ve been watching your channel for a while and may have been inspired to attempt my own paint and build up. But seeing you work through your collection had me cracking up while my wife is calling the folks to have me committed for enjoying it too much.
Loved this video @OldShovel! Thanks for taking the time to walk through your collection and create some unique content. It was fun thinking of other ways to select a winner (though the random seeding and different test criteria for each round was great). I was thinking of a shootout with various factors - ride quality, period correctness, level of rarity, and maybe time trial results from a known loop. It would also be cool to ride a loop on a modern xc hardtail to develop a control to compare the various bikes against. I have 90s steel and 90s aluminum bikes, and I find it difficult to compare the two frame materials. Great video though, and I really liked your instagram video where you affirmed your winning selection.
This video couldnt have come out on a better day. My mate is just about to get a retro 1992 gt tequesta thats been modded. Him getting that has got my 90s bike head back on.
Fun bracket, not a bad bike among the bunch. Weeding out based on weight really shook things up in the first round. There's no way the Zaskar and the Homegrown don't make my personal final four (along with maybe the S Works and the Kona Cinder Cone) 😎
Cool vid, thanks...I've ridden a lot of these and a lot of similar bikes and the best bike I've ever ridden from this era has to be my sadly-departed 1995 Diamondback DBR WCF Vertex, which ate Zaskars and Kleins for breakfast. An oft- forgotten legend.
Not sure if Paul Brodie was still in control of the business in 94 but its nice to see that the quality of his bikes shows he practices what he preaches. Id watch an interview between you two.
AThe moment I saw that Green Klein I thought This is my favourite One and I am not surprised that it won. The fact that you managed to source such vintage but tubless mavics is the coolest feature of this bike next to its paintjob. The only thing I would change is I would swap the fork for the one from that khs to match colors
Excellent video! I’m also a huge fan of 90s XC hardtail. This is an amazing collection. There are just too many brands back then that it’s hard to collect them all, but Klein is often sited as the very best.
Knew from the start the XTR Klein would win! Alloy frame would always have the weight advantage if similarly specced. Only aluminium bike I liked was the Trek with its lugged frame, reminds me of my 1990 970. Your missing a steel lugged MTB in your collection, although I believe only Trek ,Schwinn, Raleigh, Dawes and Claud Butler still made lugged frames in the early '90s My collection is all steel! Love your videos 👌
Worked at shop in the late 90’s that sold Trek (Klein and Bontrager too) and Schwinn. Wished I could get either a Homegrown or an Attitude. Really wanted a Bassboat Orange Homegrown. But I still love and ride my 95 F600 in the red/purple fade.
Some lovely examples here, they really don't make them like this anymore, built in the USA/ UK on a bike is something you don't see anymore, a Trek 8500 frame like this one (1991) has come up for sale on eBay (that will deliver) its a bit battered but frame is still structurally good, really considering getting it, already got most of the components (XT-LX from 1989-1995) on another generic frame from 1992
Great video, the brodie was a winner for me. If you would ever like to know the model of the Brodie, if it was made by Paul Brodie, then he has a large book with all of the serial numbers he made noted down with a year, model and customer. Looks to me like it could be a later sovereign or catalyst. You can ask by donating a coffee 👍🏻
I would have put money on this outcome, and won. I was OBSESSED with Klein's in the 90s. Only managed to own a Quantum road bike for a while. I even stopped in the town they were made once, on a road trip, looking for the shop, but never found it. There are some sick bikes in that quiver. Need a Yeti.
I had a '95 Team Marin with full XT, Chris King headset and White Industries hubs and cranks. Came with cantilever brakes and a rigid fork which I upgraded to a Rockshox Indy and XT V-brakes. Weighed just over 25 pounds. Don't know why I ever sold it.
Super video. Not least because it was you who inspired me to build my own 90's custom MTBs...AND coincidentally my top 2x bikes I have in my collection are a 2000 Klein Attitude with Thompson stem/seatpost, XTR/XT mix and Mavic Crossride XL wheelset, and a 1996 Team Marin I'm building up with Easton EA70 stem/bars, Mavic Crossride wheelset with a 1x XT drivetrain.
Klein would have been my choice as well. And thank you, next to your collection, mine (10) doesn't seem so bad. Pretty sure I can negotiate another N+1 with the wife after showing her this. 😂
I have a stock 96 Trek 8500 running all original Deore XT components and it still runs great! Same think with my ‘93 or ‘94 Cannondale killer V 2000 until someone stole it 😢😢😢
Nice video! Klein or the zaskar, although i do love how the ali treks ride. I'll be doing something similar before the end of the year, have somewhere between 16 and 20 bikes.... Whoops, yes the Mrs does think I have a problem. Being British I have several bikes that probably never made it to America, a Pace, an Orange, an Ozone, a Ridgeback along with some that came from America, couple of Cannondales, couple of Treks and a Funk for instance. There's certainly 4 or 5 I'm not sure I could choose between for various reasons.......... And I'd like to keep them all! Despite what the Mrs says, and I don't have a zaskar.... Yet
Simple to understand. Even the team mechanics at the time acknowledge how pain in the a.. they were to work on. You go and try to take apart one of the fatty forks or one of the 90' botom brackets. While every one else had some standards cannondale tryed to go their own way... they just didnt know when to stop. Heck. Look at the motorcycle they built at the time
@@Oliver-xz9km Agreed standard 1 1/4" Crome-Moly steerer, alloy Pepperoni fork, 1 1/4" Chris King head set and the standard BSA BB thread, those were great light frame and forks.
Interesting collection of bikes and interesting process. FWIW I don't feel that weight is a great first filter for determining a "favorite" restoration or bike. If I was doing something like that it would have to be a ride-off to find the bike that sparks the most joy, but I could also see an alternative where I just evaluate the different restorations against each other and how happy I am with how they turned out. Was really surprised how light the Ritchey Ultra was with the suspension fork - I wonder what it would have weighed with the OE rigid fork? Might have made it to the second round (I own an old Ultra of similar vintage, except with the U-Brake. Was thinking of getting rid of it, but this video got me thinking about building it back up again and trying to resolve my issues with the last build).
The finals: I had voted for the Team Marin, and I have good reasons for it: The Klein is a fantastic bike (used to have a '92 Attitude myself), but as you say, yours is not an "original" Klein. It's lacking the Klein specific headset and BB and also the paint job on those later Kleins was not as perfect as the "original" ones. Thus, imo, the Team Marin wins! Thanks for showing all these beautiful machines anyways!
Be as it may. You have the Broadie/Canada conection. Personaly, despite having a serious h..d on for all kleins, ever since i saw my neighbours, for my time, money and back pain, would chery pick from all the stock you have there and build up one of the Steel frames, Marin looks awsome, had a friend that had a similar build on a GT steel frame as you do on the attitude, he would just glide with that thing, BUT... Ritchey. Would have to be. Said it before will again. As soon as i kan, pointing to the next 2 years, not going to buy a bike, going to put it together. Ritchey frame, mavic xmax, geartrain still thinking. Need gripshifters. And a marzochi fork. Will ride the thing to the ground and spend the winters taking it apart and puting it back together by the fire place😊
I cannot remember if you’ve done a Canondale F600 late 90’s build, but would love to see that on your channel. I personally own an F600 and it still is an awesome bike to ride. Keep up the great work!!
You should try to do another one with the ones that didn't win. As take all the ones that lost see which win. Then take the number 1 from the losing pile and then take that one against the top number 1 from the one was the winner pile.

This is a video that everyone who rides bikes should see, great work on this one. Only one problem; I don't see any losers here, lol. I was surprised that the scott didn't go further( beautiful bike), my favorite is the Klein Attitude pro as well. I just " finished" building a 2000 schwinn rocket 88 full sus, however I do want to change the drivetrain from Sram x5 to Shimano xtr from that year 2000 era. Next hopefully will be a 1997 proflex 757, then hoping for a 1995 or 96 GT LTS. They are my personal dream bikes from the 90's.
I have a kellys quartz black that has a Slovakia made aluminium frame, I think it's from the year 2010, Do you think it's a good bike and is it reminiscent of the XC 90s bikes for you?
I will not use an electric bike tried one it was horrible to ride and heavy like I say if your gone go off roading or have a ride to keep fit don't have an electric bike I don't like them at all
@@Paganiproductions84 I have a mongoose from 14years ago full suspension changed nothing all original and a Saracen pro about the same age original again a Merida Matt's trail love biking don't use cars or buses biking everywhere love it 😁😁
I think only the Richey and the Marin had threaded headsets originally. GT started doing threadless in the early 90’s and by mid 90’s almost all higher end bikes were threadless.
If you look at the 90s catalogs for any big brand, you’ll see that 94 was all threaded, 95 was mixed, and by 96, pretty much everything was DIA-comp A headset.
Should have had a Bridgestone mb1 in the mix. Bought an 89 Klein after my 86 Bridgestone was stolen. Worst handling bike I've ever owned. Still riding my Voodoo Bizango after buying it new in 95 as my primary bike. Although i did upgrade the fork to a rockshox 32 a few years ago.
Sad to see the Ritchey Ultra and the Schwinn Homegrown out in Round 1. Round 2: Klein? Duh. SWorks beats Brodie because the Brodie stickers are atrocious. Very Clean, subdued satin polished Trek over Schwinn because the Schwinn is missing decals. Iconic Zaskar wins easily over gaudy Marin, even though I am not a triple triangle fan. Semifinals: Klein build is just outstanding - I would not change a thing. Brodie loses by virtue of a 1x drivetrain on a 90s bike. Trek wins on wheels and V-Brakes over the Marin. FINALS: Klein is for sure the jewel of your collection. After that (for me) SWorks, Ultra, then Homegrown.
Was sad to see so many steel bikes losing out in round 1, I bet most of them rode better than the lighter aluminium bikes. This video made me want more 90's hardtails, I have about 35 bikes but only a handful are 90's hardtails.
For those who watch a Oldshovel video for the first time:
yes, he loves his Oury grips.

No Titanium bikes😱
I thought that!
LOL, I have a road bike, a hybrid, and a mountain bike, and I think I have too many bikes.
I thought all bikes of that era had threaded headset
I think only the Richey and the Marin had threaded headsets originally. GT started doing threadless in the early 90’s and by mid 90’s almost all higher end bikes were threadless.
If you look at the 90s catalogs for any big brand, you’ll see that 94 was all threaded, 95 was mixed, and by 96, pretty much everything was DIA-comp A headset.
when do you start bids for the loser pile? Just asking for a friend.
Is the 91 GT spelled with a p or without?
You plan doying a giveaway with these bikes?
which he was using the real weight measure kigiss
Brodie
Why would you eliminate half the bikes on weight alone
How many bikes do you actually have
A lot more than 16 😬
No Bontrager, or Fat City!!!
Have we seen a fat city on old shovel?
Yea, I'd thought he'd have at least the Fat City...
I’ve done both for the bicycle collective but not for my own collection.
Was sad to see so many steel bikes losing out in round 1, I bet most of them rode better than the lighter aluminium bikes.
This video made me want more 90's hardtails, I have about 35 bikes but only a handful are 90's hardtails.
