- Boston Celtics signed Lonnie Walker IV to a training camp deal. The 25-year-old guard averaged 9.8 points in 17.4 minutes per game on 42-38-76 shooting splits for the Brooklyn Nets last season. He played in 58 games and came off the bench in all of them.

Stevens strikes gold again for athletic 2 way Wing who shoots 3s with high IQ. Celtics bench is now as good as anyone's, if not the best in the league.

This seems kind of surreal - every time I've watched this kid play, I've thought 'wouldnt mind Walker in green'. Im mostly surprised he was available, and then that he was willing to take a one year. Very exciting.

One thing I learned watching Lonnie Walker highlights is El Cuatro is an awesome nickname. I hope he gets some good minutes, runs the lane in transition, and knock down open 3s. It’s going to be a great season

Brad Stevens is a wizard what a steal. Lonnie’s definitely not scared I think he’s got a real shot at taking some of hauser and Pritchards minutes

I realize it's a highlight reel, but that good decision-making, smooth glide to the basket, and variety of soft finishes is somehow Drexler-esque.
Our bench was already pretty solid but this was a really good pick up. The Cs getting ready for battle again this yr

Absolutely love this signing. He's got no guaranteed money, so if it doesn't work out they can cut him with no penalty, but he could give them a high level athlete off the bench who can score from all three levels.

This guy should be in the rotation not wallowing away in the Portland Maine G league. He's a better lane driver and defender than Payton, Hauser or Oshae B.

I had no idea we got him until I saw the rosters for NBA 2K 25! I guess that Derrick White connection in San Antonio is paying off. I always wanted him coming off of our bench because he has a great inside/outside game. He's a good slasher and drives to the basket, and he gives the Celtics a good three point threat off the bench. I heard the Celtics were going to waive him in like two days. Don't know why. He's a keeper. I hope he stays. We need him with Kristaps likely to miss most of the season, we are going to need some explosive offense coming off the bench. Walker will provide that.
This is up there in potential with the Derrick White acquisition

love the signing but where does he fit rotationally? I want him to play, i need at least 12-18 minutes
guessing he'll be taking over Brissett's role
With two guards playing in the Olympics they should be limiting their minutes so he should play lot.

Boston does one thing better than every team in the last 10 years. Every single guy can pass the ball to an open shooter off the drive. Better yet every single guy can can shoot the ball. Lonnie adds yet another cutter who is 38% from three who has some real time starting. I mean cmon man.
Walker should thrive in the open court created by Mazzullaball. He should see a good number of open looks from deep, and if he can shoot the 38% from three again, he could stick.
Can he play the kind of focused, switch heavy defense that Boston plays? He will be competing for time with Jaden Springer, who has solid defensive chops, but hasn’t proven that he has NBA rotation quality offense, and Payton Pritchard, who can run a team as well as score, and who has gotten better defensively.
I really like Walker on a minimum deal. Having rotation quality young veterans on minimum deals like Walker, X, and Kornet, is essential in a team so top heavy with mega contracts

This team is no longer the build a run and relax on defence team any more. So I’m hoping Lonnie is more of a character kind of guy, another guy in the locker room wanting to win. Winning once is hard, again consecutively is harder. I hope he provides instant spark when things look they’re slowing down.

This is the most uninteresting commentating ever. They are lifeless
This is an overrated signing. Lonnie is a 1-skill guy whose great skill (3-level scorer) is the one thing the Cs dont need. He wont get to handle the ball in the Cs offense as he'll be at least be behind 5 players in Cs playmaking depth chart (jt, jb, jrue, white, pp). The only thing he brings that translates is the good 3pt shooting. He doesnt rebound, pass well, set screens or play defense. The Cs need more of these skills from role players (along with high 3pt efficiency). They dont need another shot creator. Much moreso a guard which is their deepest position. They need 3ND wings.
Hes arguably this teams 12th man at best (assuming Joe prefers his offense to springer's defense). And when fully healthy, no team really plays more than 9-10 men a night in the regular season.
Cs rotation:
starters 1-5: jt, jb, kp, jrue, d.white
core bench 6-9: al, hauser, pp, tillman
regular rotation mins stop here.
situational bench 10-12: luke (with kp out to start the season), queta (for the time Al sits on the 2nd night of a B2B), lonnie/jaden (if they decide to give jrue the al treatment)
maine 13-18: jaden, anton, baylor, walsh, jd, drew
camp cuts 19-20: harper jr. Enaruna
The positive here is lonnie will push jaden and baylor in camp. Lonnie though wont get mins outside of garbage time/injuries. He's not overtaking PP.
He’s a clear upgrade over springer/walsh/svi/brissett. There is no way you can be mad at this move

If he outplays PP, maybe that makes it PP expendable and the Brad can salary dump Pp + springer for picks to get under the 2nd apron while lonnie assumes PPs role as the 8th man/lead guard off the bench.
We got him at good value. He's a taller PP, proven playoffs experience, only 25yrs. I see it as a low risk high upside move. If he sits, we still have the rest of our team.
@@CarlosMuesesEduardo for sure. As i told the other guy, talent is talent. Injuries could happen, its nice to have reliable situational/rest players. Gives us the option of dumping pp and springer for picks as well if we want to get under the 2nd apron.
The point of my origjnal comment is to tell people to slow their roll. Lots of celtics content creators and fans out there acting like lonnie will be our new sixth man or break into the regular/playoff rotation.
a shooting guard version of PP is something useful for this team.
Somebody needs to use those Tillman and Kornet screens and get PP, Sam, and others open shots
