So it is clear, Greg and I were the ones who did first aid until EMTs showed. Greg was in first wave of Marines in Afghanistan and I was a ruffneck for 8 years. We only had basic first aid training and weather we did right with everything or did a few things we could have done better, we still banded together and lifted the vehicle to extract her and managed to keep her from slipping too far into shock for over an hour until the bird landed to fly her to Junction. Don't knock us. We were bystanders who wanted to help and did what we could. Heather is a wonderful person btw.
You guys did a nice job getting her out of there. I wouldn't have been so comfortable being under the buggy with it upside down though. Hard to tell how stable it was with the camera angle.

Where they DID fuck up SINCERELY was going out into a remote area to take on a KNOWN dangerous activity with apparently NOONE who WAS medically trained around with plenty of emergency gear on hand. I know it's more fun and less expensive to just run off into the desert and play. But that's also called being unprepared for the worst case scenario.

You probably have cell reception on most of this trail and if you carry a SPOT or other satellite device you can get one of several off-road tow services and varying degrees of medical attention in probably 30 minutes but usually with the number of people on this trail you're more likely to find someone that knows what they're doing so you stay out of trouble. Not exactly my definition of remote. Most of the Moab area isn't that wild these days, especially compared to 11 years ago when it was substantially less crowded and the hospital had yet to open (Feb 2011). Kind of pointless judging people 11 years after the fact. I thought this was Hell's Gate but apparently it is Escalator, which is followed by Tip-Over, so it seems like if they were experienced enough to choose one of the harder obstacles on Hell's Revenge they should have been fully aware of the tip over risk and discussed those risks ahead of time.

Watch more Hell's Gate and Hell's Revenge videos and you'll see a dude sticking his arm out onto the rock trying to keep himself from flipping! You'll see another guy put his arm out onto the door to hang on while his vehicle rolled over. It happens all the time even though we've all heard not to do it.

The rollover de-gloved my hand (tore all the skin off) and I have lost all my tendons. I have spent more than 5 weeks in the hospital & have had 9 surgeries. To date, I still have no use of my left hand. But, I'm glad to hear that you were such a man about your broken bone. I hope they set it & it healed correctl
You shouldn't have been driving in the first place.... put someone with no experience behind the wheel of an extremely powerful vehicle, without the first step of safety training for off roaders... you are lucky it wasn't your head or neck sticking out. To the rescuers and people in the video, never be on the downside of gravity with a 2000+lb. machine directly above your head. That buggy definitely, 110% should have been immediately secured with a couple of heavy duty winch cables- at least! I was shocked to see several people casually walking around and even hanging out directly below a lot of potential energy. I hope the driver is all healed up! Keep hands inside at all times!
@@AudioFreqx Yes- I recently did Hell's Revenge. It was a lot of fun but it is no joke. You realize that from the very start of the trail- literally just off the parking lot it gets real in a hurry. Very steep and narrow hump. I avoided all the optional obstacles (like this one- Hell's Gate, The Escalator & Hot Tubs) very intentionally. I see zero need to take unnecessary risks- especially at my age. You can enjoy the area safely and still have an amazing time.
Not saying this to be judgy, assume whatever personal risks you want, but by the very nature of these activities it is to be expected some people are not exactly placing self preservation as their top priority
@@yodaguy6956 The difference is, some enjoy these activities for 20+ years without as much as a scratch. Others get severely injured their first year out. Which would you rather be. Tour operators run these trails several times a day for years without a single accident. A little safety IQ and common sense goes a long way to staying in one piece, while still having much fun.

It's interesting to see an activity that pushing past the edge literally means flip you on your ass. Remember that they make safety nets to go in place of your window opening for those that forget to keep their hands in but also because sometimes centrifugal force will just fling your arm out. Think Nascar or road racing. Every racing shop can provide these for fairly affordable prices.....and seatbelts!?

Because it's a roll cage. When a cage rolls, bits of you can hit it, and your arms can come out and be crushed as the vehicle moves. That's why I always hill climb with the windows slid closed.
Nice rig, hope the arm healed up alright. I'm sure everyone after the fact can pick apart what went wrong. 1:20 you can see the rear wheels climbing the wall and starting the tip and unfortunately 1:28 you can see her arm outside when it does. I hate to say it was a painful lesson but you need to keep your hands on the wheel or covering your face in these kinds of situations. Great video and hope others can learn what to do and what not to do.
This is exactly what happened when you Don't sit down and explain to a new driver. What can happen before they get in a rig?. I blame everybody else except that driver for their injury. It's like going to a gun range and not knowing gun safety and no one explains it
It also looks like neither of them was wearing a seatbelt. Maybe a lap belt but nothing over the shoulder and certainly not a 5 point. Not trying to be critical, but to anyone watching, just note that professional drivers always wear their seatbelt.

She is equally responsible for her safety. However, because the more experienced people did not tell her even if she did not ask, I fault them as well.
I fault the person guiding her. They have no judgment or understanding on guiding her correctly. I seen this happen before I watched it. The guide should have been able to get a brand new driver up that without this happening. He should’ve had her turn to her left & keep the right front tire from pushing the jeep over. If the right tire wasn’t so far up above the left & being able to see that is Obviously the Only Way the jeep could’ve rolled so Why let the front be leaning to the rolling direction. That’s all the weight being used wrong. If anything he should’ve had it lean opposite.
Happier moments when she drove up at first, so pretty. Mistakes like these are costly ! When I was a kid I rolled our little lawn and garden tractor down a gully. I rolled away as fast as I could, no harm done. Could of been fatal. Hope Heather heals well !
Here's what you don't do. You don't take a little baby down by a hurt person or a half rolled over buggy in a ravine. Come on people. I have two little girls and as a parent you keep them safe priority number 1
A good lesson for all here, you live and learn, when you're out on the trail, safety first, I don't think the derogatory comments on here are warranted, this could happen to any of us who actually go wheeling, the worst happens when you least expect it quite often on a simple section of trail, not that I'm saying this section of trail was simple but it would be considered relatively easy for that buggy.
Saw an old man do the same thing on double whammy. Probably lost his left hand from how badly it was crushed. Rookies are the only ones that make this mistake, thinking they can stop the roll with their arm. Why they react like that, I couldn't guess. I've rolled on occasion and it's a loud and violent experience. But I grabbed tightly to the steering wheel and said hang on we're going over. That was for my co-pilot's benefit. ;)
Ok, I am a paramedic and first of all it is tourniquet, not turnicate. lol and it is not required for this. Some of you are correct, it is used ONLY! in severe bleeding. Pretty much only when an arm or leg is cut or orn off. Direct pressure, elevation, pressure points would be appropriate. If u can slow the bleeding the vessels should clot and stop the bleeding.
I’ve got 30 years experience playing in the sand dunes and racing in Baja. I hate rocky and hard boulder ground just because of so many terrible accidents and damage to vehicles. You’re going to do what you want but you have to live with the fact that you hurt somebody unless you know exactly what you’re doing. So many things wrong here, many have already mentioned Nets, shoulder harnesses, wrist restraints, helmets etc. Try to do your homework before you think you know everything. It’s all fun and games till somebody gets hurt grandpa used to say. Never stand in front of a car when someone is trying to start it. Never stand in line of the fan blade area when someone is revving their engine. Don’t run with scissors! Never carry a little baby back-and-forth underneath of a rolled over rock crawler that could have fallen at any f-ing second. It’s not these vehicles or the sport that should be banned, it’s our own thinking. Have a nice day and stop thinking you know everything. Another reason to use Arm restraints, on track days (I don't do off road, but safety is similar) they are a requirement for open cars. Also, HELMETS...you only have one head, people, please don't cite "I have don't this X times.." it does not eliminate the possibility of tragedy.
That is the number 1 way people get hurt on these things, rollovers are normally fine but so many people stick their arm out as a reflex and then they get hurt.
tourniquet is a great way to lose and arm that didnt have a problem in the first place. First thing you learn in first aid is that it is a last resort.
Couple of mistakes: 1. Simple 5 minute prepping/training on how to go up would have made her informed on how to drive up and stopped her from placing her arm out the buggy 2. THE LOOK OUTS!!!! There should have been lookouts to help direct the buggy and up close to tell her to back down when she started going up 3. Proper medical training from someone on the trail would have been wised, not totally necessary but when you have the potential for flipping over cars, it would have been smart
love all the arm chair medics around... "dont move her dont move her!..." she doesnt have a neck or back injury you need to move her to help prevent shock and more injurys... laying her out flat was the smartest thing they did, and yeah that tourniquet was the dumbest idea ever!

that rear steer is what caused it to roll. if the rear had been straightened, the rear would have stayed under it. Natural reaction is to put a hand out to try to stop it. that never works. hope she is ok

Ok a couple of things this is in Moab UT and the she didnt keep her hands on the wheel and tourniquet is a good idea when you get your arm broken to control some of the swelling if skin is not broken
I don't know what to say...the fact that this video made it on here and stayed is a good thing. A valuable lesson is learned, and people are human, we do reactive things which is why repetitive training is needed to do the right steps like keep your limbs inside. I hope she will be ok. God bless

Wow! That sure looks rough and painful. It's no fun getting hurt out on a trail somewhere far from quick help. I've done it but luckily not that bad. Sure hope she recovers well and rock's on some more!
To all watching: Please do not apply a tourniquet for a wound that is not gushing out blood and can be controlled with strong pressure. You could cause the person to lose the affected limb! Over 90% of all bleeds (even very severe ones) can be controlled with brisk pressure.
its a dangerous reflex putting your hands out to think you can hold anything on distance from your body,hard to learn never to do this but the best way not injured in the middel of nowhere.i drive twenty years a tippy Suzuki SJ413 and rolled it hard three times in trialsport. i hate rollovers with my car. i think its good i have the chance to learn before i can lost three fingers like a friend does when he grab around his rollcage and hitting a tree!
Have you ever tried it? I like hiking,backpacking & offroading. Sometimes you need to do some serious offroading to get to the best trailheads. But to answer your question, the point is that it's fun!
It appears that the occupants only used seat belts, and not also shoulder harnesses. This allows the upper torso to move and extend outside the confines of the roll cage. This means that a roll over will generate enough side forces to move the upper torso, and definitely the head outside the confines of the roll cage. They could have suffered sever head injuries. In this particular case, because of the slow motion of the rollover, the driver's head and upper torso probably came in contact with the terrain, in a manner that would have caused some pain. This is what probably resulted in the driver's instinct to push off with her hand. The driver is lucky to be alive. The hand crush could have been prevented by using wrist lanyards, which is what I use. The deficiencies are no upper harness, no helmets, and no wrist lanyards. Significant centrifugal forces are generated during roll-overs which can easily dislodge hands from a steering wheel or hand hold. This vehicle is what is called negligence.
Depends, if it was smashed under the vehicle there could be massive internal bleeding that has to be stopped. It can also help with swelling, and possibly pain. I would venture to guess, if it was smashed under the frame, it probably crushed the bones, and severed a few things in there.
Some people are such drama queens... Broken bones, if it was even broken don't hurt that bad. I broke my foot, set it myself and never got a cast... It healed just fine... I my arm 70 miles out on a trail run and drove my self to the hospital. I have never seen anybody wimp out like that over a broken bone.

Guess 4 point harnesses are just for the cool factor. Seems like no one actually uses them. I have to wonder if wearing it would have kept her in the seat and therefore saving her some agony?
I don't know how many times I've had to make it completely clear to people on the trail,if you start to roll do not put your arms outside of the vehicle and never grab the roll bar for support!!!! if you're driving keep both hands on the wheel and will if you're a passenger cross them over your chest and grab your harness if you're not wearing a 4 point harness then you don't belong in this sort of situation in the first place.

Corpman and medical party calling the shots on treatment and making the "belt Bleeder" remove his belt check. Pulse, bleeding and most import shock being addressed check. GPS verified in 2 circuits check. Recovery and extraction check. Mistakes take place, we were ready. We did the best we could provided several parties not understanding and panic on directions.

@@AudioFreqx Yes- I recently did Hell's Revenge. It was a lot of fun but it is no joke. You realize that from the very start of the trail- literally just off the parking lot it gets real in a hurry. Very steep and narrow hump. I avoided all the optional obstacles (like this one- Hell's Gate, The Escalator & Hot Tubs) very intentionally. I see zero need to take unnecessary risks- especially at my age. You can enjoy the area safely and still have an amazing time.
Not saying this to be judgy, assume whatever personal risks you want, but by the very nature of these activities it is to be expected some people are not exactly placing self preservation as their top priority
@@yodaguy6956 The difference is, some enjoy these activities for 20+ years without as much as a scratch. Others get severely injured their first year out. Which would you rather be. Tour operators run these trails several times a day for years without a single accident. A little safety IQ and common sense goes a long way to staying in one piece, while still having much fun.
@@MOAB-UT yup, I have no problem with that. As long as people arent doing something that endangers others against their will I'm fine, and all those spectators know what's up. It's interesting to see an activity that pushing past the edge literally means flip you on your ass. I'd totally be down as a spectator, just not looking to drive my stock 2001 GMC 1500 up those particular routes

Remember that they make safety nets to go in place of your window opening for those that forget to keep their hands in but also because sometimes centrifugal force will just fling your arm out. Think Nascar or road racing. Every racing shop can provide these for fairly affordable prices.....and seatbelts!?

Because it's a roll cage. When a cage rolls, bits of you can hit it, and your arms can come out and be crushed as the vehicle moves. That's why I always hill climb with the windows slid closed.
Nice rig, hope the arm healed up alright. I'm sure everyone after the fact can pick apart what went wrong. 1:20 you can see the rear wheels climbing the wall and starting the tip and unfortunately 1:28 you can see her arm outside when it does. I hate to say it was a painful lesson but you need to keep your hands on the wheel or covering your face in these kinds of situations. Great video and hope others can learn what to do and what not to do.
This is exactly what happened when you Don't sit down and explain to a new driver. What can happen before they get in a rig?. I blame everybody else except that driver for their injury. It's like going to a gun range and not knowing gun safety and no one explains it
It also looks like neither of them was wearing a seatbelt. Maybe a lap belt but nothing over the shoulder and certainly not a 5 point. Not trying to be critical, but to anyone watching, just note that professional drivers always wear their seatbelt.

She is equally responsible for her safety. However, because the more experienced people did not tell her even if she did not ask, I fault them as well.
I fault the person guiding her. They have no judgment or understanding on guiding her correctly. I seen this happen before I watched it. The guide should have been able to get a brand new driver up that without this happening. He should’ve had her turn to her left & keep the right front tire from pushing the jeep over. If the right tire wasn’t so far up above the left & being able to see that is Obviously the Only Way the jeep could’ve rolled so Why let the front be leaning to the rolling direction. That’s all the weight being used wrong. If anything he should’ve had it lean opposite.

A good lesson for all here, you live and learn, when you're out on the trail, safety first, I don't think the derogatory comments on here are warranted, this could happen to any of us who actually go wheeling, the worst happens when you least expect it quite often on a simple section of trail, not that I'm saying this section of trail was simple but it would be considered relatively easy for that buggy.
1) Always wear a helmet.
2) Don't bring a baby to a wreck.
3) Dial for help if there is any doubt.

Saw an old man do the same thing on double whammy. Probably lost his left hand from how badly it was crushed. Rookies are the only ones that make this mistake, thinking they can stop the roll with their arm. Why they react like that, I couldn't guess. I've rolled on occasion and it's a loud and violent experience. But I grabbed tightly to the steering wheel and said hang on we're going over. That was for my co-pilot's benefit. ;)

Ok, I am a paramedic and first of all it is tourniquet, not turnicate. lol and it is not required for this. Some of you are correct, it is used ONLY! in severe bleeding. Pretty much only when an arm or leg is cut or orn off. Direct pressure, elevation, pressure points would be appropriate. If u can slow the bleeding the vessels should clot and stop the bleeding.
in case of roll over always grab your seatbelt with both hands. its easy to swing one arm out of the vehicle.

I’ve got 30 years experience playing in the sand dunes and racing in Baja. I hate rocky and hard boulder ground just because of so many terrible accidents and damage to vehicles. You’re going to do what you want but you have to live with the fact that you hurt somebody unless you know exactly what you’re doing. So many things wrong here, many have already mentioned Nets, shoulder harnesses, wrist restraints, helmets etc.
Try to do your homework before you think you know everything. It’s all fun and games till somebody gets hurt grandpa used to say. Never stand in front of a car when someone is trying to start it. Never stand in line of the fan blade area when someone is revving their engine. Don’t run with scissors! Never carry a little baby back-and-forth underneath of a rolled over rock crawler that could have fallen at any f-ing second.
It’s not these vehicles or the sport that should be banned, it’s our own thinking.

Another reason to use Arm restraints, on track days (I don't do off road, but safety is similar) they are a requirement for open cars. Also, HELMETS...you only have one head, people, please don't cite "I have don't this X times.." it does not eliminate the possibility of tragedy.
That is the number 1 way people get hurt on these things, rollovers are normally fine but so many people stick their arm out as a reflex and then they get hurt.
And Bronco did Climb that trail with no trouble. Ford has done an awesome job at engineering.

tourniquet is a great way to lose and arm that didnt have a problem in the first place. First thing you learn in first aid is that it is a last resort.

Couple of mistakes:
1. Simple 5 minute prepping/training on how to go up would have made her informed on how to drive up and stopped her from placing her arm out the buggy
2. THE LOOK OUTS!!!! There should have been lookouts to help direct the buggy and up close to tell her to back down when she started going up
3. Proper medical training from someone on the trail would have been wised, not totally necessary but when you have the potential for flipping over cars, it would have been smart

that rear steer is what caused it to roll. if the rear had been straightened, the rear would have stayed under it. Natural reaction is to put a hand out to try to stop it. that never works. hope she is ok

I don't know what to say...the fact that this video made it on here and stayed is a good thing. A valuable lesson is learned, and people are human, we do reactive things which is why repetitive training is needed to do the right steps like keep your limbs inside. I hope she will be ok. God bless

Please do not apply a tourniquet for a wound that is not gushing out blood and can be controlled with strong pressure.
You could cause the person to lose the affected limb!
Over 90% of all bleeds (even very severe ones) can be controlled with brisk pressure.

Have you ever tried it? I like hiking,backpacking & offroading. Sometimes you need to do some serious offroading to get to the best trailheads. But to answer your question, the point is that it's fun!
It appears that the occupants only used seat belts, and not also shoulder harnesses. This allows the upper torso to move and extend outside the confines of the roll cage. This means that a roll over will generate enough side forces to move the upper torso, and definitely the head outside the confines of the roll cage. They could have suffered sever head injuries. In this particular case, because of the slow motion of the rollover, the driver's head and upper torso probably came in contact with the terrain, in a manner that would have caused some pain. This is what probably resulted in the driver's instinct to push off with her hand. The driver is lucky to be alive. The hand crush could have been prevented by using wrist lanyards, which is what I use. The deficiencies are no upper harness, no helmets, and no wrist lanyards. Significant centrifugal forces are generated during roll-overs which can easily dislodge hands from a steering wheel or hand hold. This vehicle is what is called negligence.

Depends, if it was smashed under the vehicle there could be massive internal bleeding that has to be stopped. It can also help with swelling, and possibly pain. I would venture to guess, if it was smashed under the frame, it probably crushed the bones, and severed a few things in there.

Some people are such drama queens... Broken bones, if it was even broken don't hurt that bad. I broke my foot, set it myself and never got a cast... It healed just fine... I my arm 70 miles out on a trail run and drove my self to the hospital. I have never seen anybody wimp out like that over a broken bone.
@05Flatline Yup another roll over CAUSED by rear steer. I have not ssen too many people use it to their advantage. It almost always gets them into trouble.
Guess 4 point harnesses are just for the cool factor. Seems like no one actually uses them. I have to wonder if wearing it would have kept her in the seat and therefore saving her some agony?

if you're driving keep both hands on the wheel and will if you're a passenger cross them over your chest and grab your harness if you're not wearing a 4 point harness then you don't belong in this sort of situation in the first place.
