One thing that really helps is when a real drummer is playing, they’re going to intentionally or unintentionally hit the hihat harder on the down beats and softer on the upbeats. When I was learning drum set I was taught to always accent downbeats (1,2,3,4) and put a grace note on the up beats (& of every beat). It really really really changes the sound from square to groovy.
You all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a way to get back into an instagram account?? I somehow forgot the password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Titan Forest I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Try this tip: On the closed hi-hat sample, randomize the start position very slightly, use a m4l effect mapped fot that. You'll be surprised by the result ( only with some few samples it don't work well )
Great tip. You can do it pretty easily if you're using a sample in Sampler, because Start Time Offset is one of the parameters you can set to an LFO. Also works great when making synth sounds; if you modulate the Start Time slightly you can get subtle changes in texture and tuning which are really interesting.
Best explanation I've found. I was getting confused with timing, random and choosing an actual groove when all I wanted to do was move the midi notes a couple of ticks off the grid, and now I know, cheers!
Great tips mate, and very well xplanined. I noticed you used piano roll in full window, ive been wishing a short cut for this since live 7, do you have any work around for that? tks in advanced
Love this video, very helpful! What about using the velocity parameter in the groove setting, instead of the midi velocity effect? Isn't it the same thing?
No, not entirely. The Velocity parameter within any Groove is dependent on whether or not that Groove file actually has an Velocity information, and many don't. So you'll see that in a lot of the Grooves (for example any pf the Swing Grooves) adjusting the Velocity parameter will have no effect. So the Velocity MIDI Effect is a much more reliable way of control the Velocity.
I'd highly recommend just getting a midi keyboard and adjusting the velocity through playing. Harder to learn? Yes. Costs more? Yes. But is it worth it? Definitely.
Velocity is easy ...how about a good way to randomize stale progression midi where 3rd and fourth chord notes all start on the same grid line. Why cant i find this
Great. Your tutorial seems to demonstrate the method for instruments based on Ableton's sampler. Is there a different method for non-proprietary instruments? How about, for instance, using Neptune from your ANLG bundle? ;)
Nope, exactly the same no matter what instrument you use, 3rd Party, or built-in, synthesizer, sample or drum machine, as long as it receives MIDI it all works the same.
Hmm... 🤔 Can you give me a bit more info? What happens when you try to drag them? Do you get some kind of icon indicating that you can't drop them or does it let you drop them onto the Clip but then they just don't get applied. Are the Grooves showing up in the Groove Pool? The more info you can give me the easier it'll be to help you out, thanks 😊
ELPHNT I get an Icon telling me I can't place it there. The only way they appear in the groove pool is when I double click a groove, but it won't affect the midi clip I selected
Once the Grooves are in the Groove Pool, if you double-click on a MIDI Clip then go to the bottom left where you find the Clip Box - can you select a Groove from the Groove Dropdown there?
Great tutorial, just please filter the audio because your letter "S" is whistling like hell and with headphones it's really a pain. Again good job globally
It is a problem with your headphones. Even though my headphones might make those "S" letters louder than they are, in this video the voice sounds quite ok
Hacker Man Hah I’m glad you commented because I was pretty sure that was the case. But I’m a bit late as well, they’ve probably been leaving comments on every video they watch, telling the person who made it to edit out the sibilance.
interesting video. but abeton random isn't really human random. humans don't really randomize velocities and position the way ableton does it. there's a completely different process. that's why ableton random always feels well...random, in a inhumane kind of way.
@@Churro_Flaminguez I can agree that it adds randomness, but not humanity. And at small enough amount it might be quite adequaty and effective, and not be distinguishable for most from actual human variation. The way humans "randomise" however, isn't really based on pure white noise random type distribution, which is what Ableton does, and that's my point. Check out work by Holger www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4246955/
It can't be this difficult. I should just be able to right click on the track and set my humanize level. Not of the tips in this video worked and even if they did i'm not sure I would want to take the painstaking time to humanize in this way for EVERY, SINGLE, TRACK.
You could definitely do that, but this tip is more aimed at people who might be not so comfortable with playing things in and so are programming MIDI in with the mouse, or a step sequencer.

This is the best free software Ive seen. Respect.
I would pay for and 100s of videos from you ELPHNT. For real man this is such valuable info
The groove tool is my holy grail 🤯 manually moving midi notes around really kills inspiration
This is the best video for all the randomization features in Ableton on youtube
BROTHER, YOU ARE THE BEST!!! You oooh really helped me!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
The RUclips algorithm gods sent this video my way. Love the channel 🔥🙏
Hey man Great Video! Good explanation. Don't stop, make more awesome tutorials. I really like your voice and how you talk. Very peacefully and calm :)
Hehe, thanks, I get that a lot. Maybe I should start doing meditation videos as well 🙃 There definitely more Ableton vids coming soon though 😉
Live 11 makes the use of velocity randomisation much easier !
great video!!! thank you from argentina!!
Thank you so much this helped a lot!!!! You saved my life
Really nice and helpful... Thanks!
That’s amazing and so helpful, I have one tip. Maybe you can make the black bar with your live keys smaller? That would be great. Love your videos ❤️
Actually a very very nice tutorial. Cheers for that mate!
Always a pleasure ☺️
That was great. Thank you.
Great video i was just looking for some medium to advanced video tutorials and this isi great.
Thanks! More on the way soon 🤓
Great video thank you ELPHNT!
This is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much!
Anytime 😊
your voice is really soothing
Hehe, thanks. If music doesn't work out at least I know I have a second career as a meditation voice over artist 😂
very true! would love to hear you do an audiobook
@@tennisgenius Haha, anyone from Audible listening? 🤓
Wow, very good explained and it really does make sense, thanks
great vid! can't wait to use this on my next song

Correct!
informative! thank you.
very beautifully explained
thanks for the knowledge man !

I always leave my MIDI Editor at fullscreen and then use CMD+Alt+L or (CTRL+Alt+L on PC) to hide & show the Detail View. Works pretty well for me 😁
@@ELPHNT yes, used that one too. Tks for kind reply !
Great tutorial! Keep it up
Soooooooooooooo good, thank you!

What was groove going to do to your completely legato chord all hitting on the first beat?
Big Thanks!
Does it work for piano chord midi? Or just drums? Thanks for a great tuturial
Any MIDI will work! 😃
Do the groove settings affect each individual note of a chord so that the piano sound like you are not playing every note of a chord at the same time?
Indeed they do - I use a groove with a little bit of randomisation on pianos all the time, just to give them a bit of life.
My ableton sampler don’t have the MIDI tab , or I cant find it? :( does somebody know?
Are you sure you're not looking at the Simpler? What version of Live do you have?
Can one apply that velocity randomization effect to third party/non-sampler-based midi instruments? Would this require a different method?
Yes, of course. Anything that accepts MIDI as an input.

Claw I’m a bit late, but there’s a button under it that says ‘commit’ or something, I think, that then changes the clip.

It's not how amazing the humanized version is, it is how gross the un-humanized version sounds haha
