Steve Earle gets the credit for writing the great tune and he sings it well too, but I think Waylon just sings the best version!! ...Great share Eddie...Thank you so much!!
Waylon is so under rated. Even, Willie has to tip his hat to Jennings. He was an old school cowboy but with a modern, creative talent. Clearly learned a lot from Buddy. RIP to both of them.
@mtmx7 Cash recorded it, but it is originally by Steve Earle. Waylon's version was the first released, though. Steve had done it on a record that was never released (before he broke through with Guitar Town), but he didn't released it until 1988 on Copperhead Road. Cash's version was years later on Unearthed.
@teddie488 I think I remember Steve saying in an interview that this was the first cover of one of his songs that he cared about. Must have been cool for a young songwriter to have Waylon do his song. This came out right around the time as Guitar Town, so Steve was still an unknown writing songs for others.
ive been trying to download this version myself so thanks to whoever got it done.Ilove this version!!! Waylon at his finest .SO GOOD JOB to whoever loaded this thanks
The lyrics are "Trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed." "Drug" is past tense of "drag" (though grammatically incorrect). Steve Earle's lyrics are all on a fan site - unofficial Steve Earle. I don't think Waylon changes any.
@Rustina61 Nope, on Ch. 5.3 (ThisTV; which plays mostly movies) in Los Angeles, a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, didn't get to see the beginning of the movie, but I just checked their website and it says that the next rerun is on Oct 20th, so I plan on watching it than. Thanks for your time.
In order, here's who I think have done the best covers of this great Steve Earle tune: The Highwaymen, this version by Waylon Jennings, the Johnny Cash electric version--all are great. Oddly enough, the versions I don't really dig are the ones by Steve Earle himself.
I believe this is a johhny cash song but this is the best version of it! Does anyone know what movie this was played in? I do but cant remember the name Tom Berringer was a kkk leader in it w deborah winger!
and i think debra wagner was the fbi lady chasing them. i forget what it was called but thats how i first heard the song... good movie 2. and i agree this is def the best version of the song.

Not sure what grammar has to do with freedom... but I was responding to a question about the lyrics to someone who I believe is is learning English, so added that explanation.
You are right, that wasn't explicitly racist. But given the general hatred you expressed, I made that assumption. Had you written a thoughtful response instead of calling names, I would have given the benefit of the doubt.
The "devil's right hand" was written by Earle but it was sung better by Jennings. I lost all respect for Earle when he turned into leftist and condemned guns.
In my first comment? Yes maybe i was a little rude and apology for that but it was also insulting to me because i sometimes use the phrase "dragged" and many other SLANG words.
The original post was a simple question of what the word meant from someone The fact that he/she does not understand slang is not an insult to you in any sense, nor is it an insult for me to explain the grammar, as I made no negative comments about the use of slang. (Especially since the person is not from an English speaking country.) You took it way to personally and attacked the original post. The remaining conversation was not even about the grammar.
"Leave it to those who can?" Get over yourself. In my experience, people who have to prove they are smarter than someone else on a forum like youtube usually are overcompensating. And unless youare a linguistic scholar, which I doubt, I don't think one example (rap) proves any point. In any case "free" is an empty form in a philosphical sense and as such, your statement is vague and unsupported. Enough.
The comment simply asked for clarification on the lyrics, and you toss out insults as well as getting in a a little racism. You give Texans a bad name.
Waylon is the only guy who does cover songs better than the original. RIP HOSS

RIP to both of them.
Waylon Jennings was a huge talent that passed too soon.
What a combination, the great talented writing of Steve E and Waylon's top singing, both strong individuals in their own right! Thanks, Eddie Bear :-)
@mtmx7

Thanks for posting this teddie. A fan from denmark
By far the best version of this song!
That was the first time I heard the nice song. I must say that I been amazed of the great hit in the late 80`s. Stein from Norway! :-)

The Highwaymen recorded it together on The Road Goes On, but as far as I know only Waylon and Cash did solo versions.

I am partial to Steve's, but thanks for posting this great version. It has been missing from around here!
Great version of this classic by Steve Earle but his is still my favourite!
Happened to watch the 1988 movie Betrayed and heard this song at the end. Good tune, also a good movie.
@Rustina61 yeah, me too. Liked the song immediately.
the movie was betrayed and waylon sang this song at the end of the movie.
The lyrics are "Trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed." "Drug" is past tense of "drag" (though grammatically incorrect). Steve Earle's lyrics are all on a fan site - unofficial Steve Earle. I don't think Waylon changes any.
Hi! great song, my everyday is full of adventure now, your channel makes it.

@Rustina61 Yeah, for us it's called Antenna TV, which is on channel 5.2 here in Los Angeles.
Thanks for your time. I'll be sure to watch the movie :)
the movie is Betrayed (1988)
Great song. Steve Earle wrote it but Waylon really brought it to life.

It was also in Brokeback Mountain (Steve's version.)

Hi Eddie I like Steve Earle, & Waylon has made a great job of this song, I like Steve,s "Guitar Town" best. & do it at K/oke. ~ Arthur
i like the highwaymen's version better...although this is very good just because it's Waymore....
name of movie betrayed also had tom berenger great movie
Yeah loved that movie too. Heard this song at the end of that movie for the first time, loved it ever since!!!
and i think debra wagner was the fbi lady chasing them. i forget what it was called but thats how i first heard the song... good movie 2. and i agree this is def the best version of the song.
Has everyone of The Highwaymen recorded this song?
Steve brought plenty of life to it as well. Why the need to minimize the original?
That's just my opinion. I think Steve Earle is a great talent and didn't "minimize" him in any way.
Careless people with guns cause problems and trouble. Do not go around murduring and remember to respect our Lord jesus and respect our police for dealing with idiots with guns
@teddie488 Agreed ~ Arthur
Just listened to this and steve earls original... Sadly but not sadly have to say Cash's rendition was better in my opinion
+Michael Kennedy
I guess I think that way too.
Wonder if I too smoked six packs of cigarettes a day Could I sing even half this good
Every the cigarrettes??🤷😀
@Rustina61 Me too. (but not tonight)
Not sure what grammar has to do with freedom... but I was responding to a question about the lyrics to someone who I believe is is learning English, so added that explanation.
You seemed to be suggesting there was no "life" in the orginal. That seems like minimizing it to me, but maybe it was just an unintentional phrasing.
You are right, that wasn't explicitly racist. But given the general hatred you expressed, I made that assumption. Had you written a thoughtful response instead of calling names, I would have given the benefit of the doubt.
