I've enjoyed watching this clip as it shows how much Jobcentres have changed. I left school in the mid 90's, the dying days of the "cards on boards" and it was a lot simpler then, get card, queue and arrange an interview. I'm unemployed now and i would say it's harder to be unemployed now than then. Nobody gives a shit about you, you're written off as workshy and 60% of work available seems to be god awful dead end temp warehouse work through iffy agencies and the DWP staff are just box tickers.
I am amazed nobody spotted her in this episode The lady in the clip ( 1:38 ) on the left hand side. Later on she was in Eastenders as one of the Slater's sisters. She was Gary's girl friend in EE
This still happens so much. I took a look at the employer's side of the UJM interface a few months back and get this... when you post a new job advert, the default closing date (positioned to be not immediately obvious to the average office worker) is months down the line. I also saw no way to mark a job as no longer available. So it's no wonder I never hear back from any of my applications regardless of the awe-inspiring CV - the jobs are all filled.
You just get agencies putting up jobs now that don't exist and saying the money is £8:00 an hour, you sign up with the hope of getting that job then they ring you back and offer you a job at £6:19 an hour.
This is my life now! Can't get a job for shit, job centre is just a shambles. I'm even educated to masters level, but that counts for fuck all these days. Oh well guess il apply for another 100 jobs this week. Sigh...
And that folks is exactly what it was like during the 80s...

Tucker's a really good guy. Likes to pick on his friends and the little guys just for a "joke," but then sticks up for them when it REALLY counts.
You wouldn't be able to get away with 09.02 at a Jobcentre nowadays, Tucker would be in the back of a police car before the episode had finished...
Exactly why I'm grateful for the job I have, even if it pays short buttons and washers.

Voice of a generation. Well, either Tucker or Rik the people's poet.

From the elusive Series 1 - Episode 2.
@2:08 - He's a DSS clerk ? - He looks more like a bouncer in a gay bar !
@hoppity42
This sort of shit here: 09:34 used to happen for real back then. I hope it doesn't now. But...I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
Well sorry at least in the 80s you could sighn on. I left school in the 90s and had to do a YTS
